Hoffa. Ent7ann Braun may retire frons
the British Parliament and return to
Canada, It is said there ie talk of hie
appointment to the Judicial Committee
of the Privy Colluoil,
NaxT Monday nominations will be
made for the vacancy in the riding of
North Brant in connection with the
Looai Legislature. Mr, Wood, tbo late
member, has been appointed Registrar.
TEE old toper's sky is clouded these
days for not only has the price of grog
gone up but the necessary sugar to
sweeten it has also advanced. Tho fore-
going, coupled with the Prohibition Com-
mission's "valuable" compilation, should
help remove the lighthouse proboscis
from not a few.
ALTEeuon Japan has modified her
terms of settlement with China, Russia
does not appear to be satisfied and is
poking her nose rather inquisitively into
the Sunrise Kingdom. There is such a
thing as Russia going a step too far in
meddling with what does not concern her
people very intimately.
Tiro decease of Judge Toms will prob-
ably make room for the promotion of a
Huron County Barrister to a Judgeship.
If eo, the most likely person is E. L.
Dickinson, of Wingbam, whose appoint-
ment would be popular with all classes.
He is well qualified for the position and
has had considerable practice in pre•
siding at Division Comte,

Mrs. Henry Schultz, of Milverton,
slipped on a piece of dandelion flower,
which was lying on the kitchen floor and
fractured her leg. She will be laid up
for some time.
The assessment of the town of Mit-
chell has been completed. There is 80,.
000 more property on the roll this year
than last. The population ie about the
same, 2,200. The Methodists are the
largest denomination, 894 ; Presbyter-
ians, 439; Church of Eugland, 088 ;
Lutherans, 178 ; Catholios, 117 ; Sal-
vation Army, 23 ; Baptiste, 17 ; Free
Church, 12 ; no ohuroh, 17, and one man
independent of any church.
With stern deliberateness the law has
already begun to prepare for the exean.
tion of &.made Chattelle, the murderer of
little Jessie Iieith. Strict secrecy is still
maintained by the officials as to the do-
ings of the condemned man, and the
preparations for his execution. The
hangman, it is understood. has already
been engaged, however. Who the exe-
cutioneris of course cannot be learned,
but he is not unlikely to be the famous
Radcliffe. Within the past week the
weight that ie to jerk Chattelle into
eternity has been oast at the foundry
in oonnection with the Stratford Bridge
Company's works on Erie street. The
weight le 900 pounds heavy, and is of
eolidiron, The moulders did not know
big leas was for when the
what the y
made the casting, and a gruesome feel-
ing steals over some of the more sensi-
tive of them when they think what they
have done. While these preparations
for his death hese been proceeding Chat-
telle maintains his air of stolid indiffer-
ence: Sinoe the death sentence was pas.
sed Upon him he has shown no sign that
he realizes his position. He has no
spiritual adviser. He spends hie time in
idleness, eats heartily and sleeps well.
The execution takes plaoe on Friday,

He abhorred anything in the :eliape of
sham or deceit, and -bad no hesitation in
openly denouuoing whatever he believed
to be wrong. Strong fu his own movie -
tions of right, he was not a man who
could be swayed from the path of duty
by anyspereuasion or impulse. For nine
years be has beonReeve of the town, an
office he held at the time of his death,
In this position he especially enjoyed the
oonfidence of the public. Even those
who at times regarded him as unduly
cautious and careful, knew that he could
not be guilty of intentional wrong doing.
Extravagant or improper use of public
funds he would not tolerate for a mo -
meat, and he was a most careful guardian
of his publio trust. Unusually well in-
formed in 'municipal affairs, possessing
well-trained mental faculties and with ell
the complex and intricate details of any
public matters thoroughly at command,
he was a mac of more than ordinary ao-
oeptability at municipal gatherings, and
so well was this known and appreciated
that his opinion, much sought after, was
almost invariably accepted without ques-
tion. As a member of the County Coun-
cil, be was simply invaluable, especially
in regard to land assessment. Knpwing
personally almost every farm on every
ooaeession of the county, his valuation,
when a member of the Equalization
Committee, was accepted as authentic.
A member also of the House of Refuge
Committee, his best efforts were given to
this question until the matter was parried
to a suooeeeful issue, be realizing fully
the benefits such an inttitutiou would be
to the poor of the county. Mr, Mo:lfur-
obie has for years been a member of
Willis Presbyterian ohnrob, a trustee
also, and one of the Board of Manage-
ment, and so long ae his strength would
allow, was a regular attendant on the
services of the aural. Politically he
was a staunch Liberal, and a few years
ago was requested to allow his name to
go before a Liberal Convention., but he
positively deolined. By care and pro.
deice he was able to leave his family well
provided for. fie leaves a wife, one' son

would be fatal, he hoe combatted the

Ilia Friends Thought111m Near Death's

Once More Regained the Messing of
1'erfeef Health.
From the Comber Herald.
Stronghold is a post office corner about
six miles from Comber. It was named
after the highly respected and well known
family of Strange. The neighborhood is
a quiet one, being inhabited by a church-
going, sober, industrious people. Among
the people of that neighborhood none as
better or more favorably known than Mr.
Thos. Strang. Mr. Strang is a man of
middle age and a bachelor. A few Boys
ago he related to the Herald the story of
his recovery from an illness which he be-
lieves would have resulted fatally but for
the use of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills.
The origin of Mr. Strang's trouble was
la grippe which developed into heart dis-
laid for He 0 r months with every
nerve in his frail body unstrung. He
tried many medicines, but none seemed
to materially benefit him. He would
rally at times and endeavor to walk, but
hie system being reduced and weakened
he would frequently fall prostrate to the
ground, and his friends had to carry him
into the house. This terrible state of
things lasted for months and all the
while he was getting weaker, and even the
most hopeful of his friends feared the
worst. Mr. Strang was strongly urged
to try the world renowned Dr, Williams'
Pink Pills and consented to do so. A
neighbor was dispatched to the Comber
drug store for a supply. In a few days
after beginning their use he began to im-
prove. In a couple of weeks he wee able
to walk around, and to -day Mr. Strang is
rejoicing and telling the some old story
that hundreds of others aro telling in this
fair Dominion—the story of renewed
strength through the use of Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills. Mr. Strang le now a sound
man. Quite frequently he walks to
Comber, a distance of six miles, to attend
church. He informed the Herald that
he was only too glad to give his experi-
ence so that suffering humanity may also
reap the benefit and thus be released from
the thraldom of disease and pain. To
hie benefactors—for such they aro—Mr.
Strang feels that he owes a debt of grati-
tude, With him the days when beads of
agouy stood on his brow have passed
away, enable body has boon regenerated
anew by the use of Dr. Williams' Pink
Pine.
