THE VIOLET.
Down in a green and shady bed
A modest violet grew,
It's stalk was bent, it hung its head,
As if to bide from view.
And yet it was a modest flower,
With Dolor bright and fair.
It might have graced some rosy bower
Instead of hiding there.
Oh let me to the valley go,
This pretty flower to see,
That I may also learn to grow
In sweet humility. •
--Sarah Lee.

Now to men and women grown—
' From the home nest have departed,
And these two are left alone.
Tears have marked with stealthy fingers
Lines upon her obeaks and brow ;
Still a charm about her lingers
For the husband even now.•
He, once strong in manly beauty,
Old-time power' no more can wield ;
Yet she, in her love and duty,
Holds his still her staff and shield.
Youthful love grows sweeter, parer,
Through the trials they have met,
Holds their hearts together surer—
Each one trusts and does not. fret.
Without fear or timorous shiver
They await "the muffled oar"
That shall bear them o'er the river
To that strange and distant shore.

The afternoon train to Woodstock and
Port Dover, Thursday . was delayed at
Stratford until after six o'alook, some
repairs being in progress on a bridge this
side of Woodstock. An amusing incident
occurred in connection with the delay.
One of the waylaid passengers with a
hairoute adornment of abundant propor-
tions, feeling uncomfortably warm
through the sudden outbreak of spring,
thought to "kill two birds with one stone"
and improve his time by having his looks
shortened. He repaired to a neighboring
tonsorial parlor for the neoeseary capillary
abridgement and had just the hair et one
side of his head removed with the clippers
when he was startled by the sound of a
hell and the moving train. Fearful lest
he missed his train, the barber's subject
jumped from the chair and waiting so
long as to pick up his collar and necktie,
hurried down the street through the
crowds to the platform arriving brenth•
leas, only to find hie train standing where
he bad left it. The man's appearance
wae the cause of no little amusement to
those who witnessed the aceoe. The gen-
tleman afterwards returned to the barber
shop and Idled his barbering completed.
He declared he would have taken the train
as he was however, had it been necessary.
