MONTREAL, April 22.—There was quite
a little activity in the horse market this
week. Arrivals have increased perceptib-
ly, and the demand shows an appreciable
expansion. At the Point St. Charles
market there have been tem:weed export
purchases, both for States and English
markets, Messrs. Fawcett, Laurie, Halli-
day and Murphy were the principal buy-
ers for English account, and during the
last few days they have taken about 180
head. Abour 50 were shipped to the
other side of the line. There 10 no ma-
teriel ohmage 10 prices, but the firm ten.
dewy developed a week ago is more pro-
nounced, and the conoensus of opinion is
that values on heavy draught horses,
which are coming in less freely, aro go-
ing higher. Most of last week's business
in heavy horees was transacted on the
basis of 575 to $150, while good driving
horses sold from 9100 to 5150. Receipts
ibis week will be moderately laege.
There are about three loads at the Point
now, and two more are expected early in
the week, and probably three or four will
arrive Saturday.
Tontheo, April 23.—In butchers' cattle
the feeling to -day was s little easier at the
Western cattle yards. Buying fon export
was not motive, for the want of rho prop-
er kind of cattle. In hogs there was a
good trade done, but the feeling was only
steady. Offerings of all stuff were rather
liberal-81t(3(1'1'1We all told, which 8i,
chided 960 hogs, 97 sheep and lambs, over
100 calves and a dozen milli cows. In
butchers' cattle everything sold before the
close of the day, but the feeling was
slightly easier from last market day.
Not many really good butchers' cattle
offered. The top price was abode 40 per
pound for choice cattle, only one or two
Picked heads going a fraction above that
Bgute. Some of the best butchers' cattle
were taken by shippers to 1111 up space
aboard ship at Portland. Common cattle
sold at from 80 to flao per pound, with
tether a slow enquiry. Export cattle
were slow, not many of the right kind be-
ing on the market. One bunch of 10
cattle, 1,200 lbs., average, sold at go per
pound, and a few more lots at about the
same figure for good steers, and 4c per
pound for bulls. In hogs, prices are no
higher, although trade was salve. Drov-
ers report this feeling as being slightly
easier. Good long, lean hogs, wore oiling
to -day at from 5c to 54c por Ib. weighed
off the oars, most of the deals beingin the
vicinity of Sc per lb. Fat eowe bring
from $4.90 to $5 per: cwt., and store
about the same. Not many sheep and
lambs three in, and the market was
steady at last Friday'p quotatione. Good
grain -fed yearlings bring from 05 to 5ie
ee pound. Spring lambs are 010100 and
anted. Those in sold from $3,50 to $4.-
5 each, according to quality. There was
o inquiry for stepping therm. In calves
