A Film ENGINE TEST. -Tuesday's To-
ronto Globe says :-Before a good-sized
audience yesterday afternoon the propri-
etors of the Ronald steam fire engine gave
an illustration of the working of that en-
gine. The proposition bad originally been
to play over the ruins of the Mollinnon
building, but in consequence of the cold
Weather, which would have coated the
walls with ice, the architect forbade this,
and so the engine was placed at the cor-
ner of Bay and Melinda streets, and un-
der the management of Robert Watt,
foreman of the Ronald Steam Fire .En-
gine Works at Brussels, gave a series of
exhibitions. The hydrant pressure alone
was first tried ; it registered 70 pounds,
and with 200 feet of hose sent a horizon-
tal inoh and a half stream80 feet distance
and a vertical stream to a height of about
50 feet, or three storeys high. They
then got up steam, starting with cold
water and three gauges of water. Infour
and a quarter minutes from the lighting
of the match there were five pounds of
steam np ; in five minutes there were 20
pounds, marlin seven minutes there were
100 pounds. The water pressure ran up
to 230 pounds when a section of the hose
burst, there being then 115 pounds of
steam up. They took off one length of
hose and the horizontal stream was then
thrown 225 feet, while the vertical stream
was estimated to go 40 feet above the top
of the McKinnon block. When the hose
was shortened the horizontalstream went
275 feet and the vertical stream about
225 feet high. They then tried two
streams simultaneously ; with the hyd-
rant pressure two inch and a quarter
st :cams went about 70 feet horizontally
and a proportionate distance high, The
steam was then put on, and without urg-
ing or spurting the engine threw its
streams nearly as far and as high as be-
fore. This second time the full supply
of the hydrant was taken up ; consider-
ation for the hose prevented all the water
being used in the single stream trial.
One feature of the engine is that ib can
employ both outlets from the hydrant in
consequence of having two communica-
tions on the suction side of the engine.
The Ronald company have a new and
larger engine at their works that can be
shipped to Toronto at a moment's notice,
Assistant Chiefs Graham and Thompson
and a number of firemen were among the
crowd, which was much interested in the
performance.

John Swan & Sons, limited, Liverpool,
in their weekly report of January 4; says:
-"There have been fairly large supplies
of fat cattle on offer this week. There
have been no south country buyers north
this week on account of the holidays, but
the home demand has been sufficiently
good to cause prices to advance about 16e.
a head. The London market, not saving
recovered from the glut of the great
Christmas market, continues dull. Fat
cows met a decidedly better trade. Sheep
wore offered in small numbers, and they
met an active trade at rather higher
prices. Calves, a short supply and they
made exceedingly high prices where good.
Few pigs were on offer, and they continue
to make very unsatisfactory prices.
There is still a good inquiry for good
ohm shire cattle, and they get well sold
at satisfactofy prices. Milch cows were
scarce and those met a fairly, good trade.
Best beef, 80 ; secondary, 7s to 78 84 per
stone ; best mutton, 8d to 89d per lb."
TORONTO, JAN. 15.-A feature of the
market to -day was the buying of export
cattle by Mr. Thompson to be sent to
Britain via Halifax. In butchers' cattle
trade was not any better, and a good deal
of stuff was left in the pons at the close
of tbo day. Hoge were firm. Offerings
to -day wore 50 car loads, which included
436 sheep and lambs and 680 hogs. In
export cattle there was some buying, but
the right kind were hard to get. Only
real fat cattle can bo taken. Mr. Thomp-
son was buying a few export bulls and
steers, for which he paid on an average
from 8c to 8}o per pound, These would
average about 1,800 pounds each. In
butchers' tattle only picked cattle were
bringing as high as Slao per pound to -day,
and the market was dull. A lot of stuff
WAS left in the pens at the oloso. Reports
from Montreal are discouraging. The
run of prices paid was from 80 to 890 per
pound -the latter for good oattlo. Com-
mon and poor cattle dragged, in fact they
could hardly Boll at all. PriOee for these
Went ae low as 243 per pound. There wee:
fair trade done in export sheep, and alto
in lambs. Lambs were exceptionally ac-
tive, and advanced to 4o per pound.
Shipping sheep sold ab from 8c to 3c per
pound, with a small demand. Ga vos-
