MRS. SANT OIU)'S STATEMENT,
Mre, W E. Sanford, wife of the Cana.
dian Senator, was interviewed at quaran-
tine Thursday morning on the arrival of
the, steamer Malestio, She stated that
Mies Helena Thompson, daughter of the
late Sir John Thompson, Premier of
Oanada, was under her ore, and had
borne the trip remarkably well, ehowing
ooneiderable fortitude under her afiiiotion,
In speaking of the sudden death of the
late Premier, Mrs. Sanford said Sir John
died on Wednesday, December 12, and as
Miss Thompson, was at the time in Paris
Her Majesty sent for myself and daugh-
ters to oondolo with us. We went to
Windom, in Her Majesty's own oarriage
and wore received with the greatest con-
sideration and kindness. We were pros.
ent when Her Majesty laid two wreathe
of flowers on Sir John's bier. On Saber -
day morning the body was brought to
London, and on Thursday ,afternoon
Senator Sanford and Miss Thompson ar.
rived from Paris, On Friday morning
solemn requiem macs was said, and on
Saturday the Queen sent for Miss
Thompson and myself. We were receiv-
ed by the Queen and Princess Beatrice
alone, and there we no attendants to break
in upon our grief. He Majesty drew Mies
Thompson to her and kissed and consoled
her, and also pressed my hand' to assure
me of her heart felt sympathy. I wish
you could adequately 'express the extreme
tenderness and anxiouseolicitation of
Her Majesty. In every way inher power
she showed that she was deeply moved
by the sad oocurrenoe and desired to have
us understand so. I will proceed at once
to Ottawa' with Helena. r have just re.
oeived a letter from Mr. Pope informing
me that there will be nobody at New
York to meet Miss Thompson, and I will
of course take her direot to Hamilton,
Ont., our home, in the care of H. O'hara.
My hneband as you know doubtless, is to
accompany Sir John Thompson'sbody on
the man-of-war Blenheim.
Mrs. Sanford is a very handsome lady
with clear complexion. She seemed
deeply moved while telling her story.
The Majestic left Liverpool on Deo. 19,
The second day out was exceedingly dis-
agreeable, and almost everybody onboard
was ill. The Majestic made but 890
miles thkt day. Mies Thompson was
rather ill that day, but otherwise, Mrs.
asnford said, she bore the voyage very
nicely. The young lady kept as much as
possible to herself, and for the most time
was in her sitting•room. She hardly
ever appeared in the dining -room, and
usually took her meals in the privacy of
her owe room. An elaborate Christmas
dinner was served on that day, but Miss
Thompson was not present. "It was a
sad Christmas for the poor ohild," oom-
mented Mrs. Sanford, "but' she has been
a brave girl since her first great grief over
her father's sad death was over."
RULING 'PIIS 111.1iB1.ND.
The New York Onoe a Week has Wart-
ed a prize competition for women writers,
the subject being "How to 'Rule s. Hus-
band." Miss L. R. Robertson, of Mobile,
has won the prize, a set of Charles
Lever's works, by her contribution as
follows :
"No husband is .invulnerable to love,
tact and common sense. Be will yield as
surely to such a sceptre as the needle
does to the pole. Let whosoever will test
the following rules..:
First, love him. Not with sentimental
gush, but with that frank trust that
koow's no suspicion—even if you find the
letter, of another's fair hand in the pocket
which you are mending. It is likely an
appeal for obarity or some indigent widow
begging a position for her eon. Nothing
makes a man's heart so obdurate as a
wife's distrust.

affairs. If he does tool you a 'little are
you the happier for deteoting it ?
If he still'elings to •his bachelor days'

vinegar never. Snell home comforts will
so permeatethrough that thereafter he
will stride by all of the allurements in
town to get to it and 10 you. Then, be
companionable. If he likes polities;
metaphysies, the turf or obese, and you
do not, appropriate some of that spare
time devoted to novels in posting your.
