New sohool regulations for the Indians
of the Northwest have been issued by
the Indian Department. The principle
of these is that all Indian children be-
tween the ages of seven and sixteen shall
attend a day school on the reserve on
which they reside for the full term
during which the sohool is open each
year, unle's mused as already under
effioientinstructions or being necessary
to the sspporb of some person dependent
on the child. Indian agents are em-
powered to appoint truant offaere on the
reserves, and parents or guardians are
liable to a flue of 32. Provision is also
made for the 'forcible removal of children
wbnee education or comfort is being
negieoted to the industrial schools. If
properly parried out the regulations
mean compulsory education.
