llth, Jos. J. Golley, V. S. formerly of
Brussels, and Mies Margaret Johnston
were joined in tbe hely bonds of matri-
mony by the Rev. E. W. Hughes, of
Adelaide, at the residence of the bride's
mother Victoria street, Wingham, before
e large number of invited guests. After
the conclusion of the ceremony, all sat
down to a. bountifulropest. The presents
were useful, ornamental and costly, and
testified the high esteem in which the
young couple were held by their many
friends. THE Pose extends congratula-
tions.

Deemer town Council has wisely re•
yoked the leasing system proposed in the
purchase of a Ronald engine and will
submit a by-law to raise $4,000 in 20
years with 5% interest, with which to
buy a fire steamer. Voting takes place
on Nov, '17th. ' The Durham Review
says :--The ballot will give the double
privilege of voting for or against the by-
law, and a ahoioe between Ronald and
Waterous engines.
PRIZES AWARDED.—President Ferguson
and Secretary Stewart spent three days
last week inspecting the various acre
plots of turnips entered in competition
for the prizes offered by the East Huron
Agricultural Society. After oarefully
going over the exhibition lots the awards

the subject and program of the Epworth
League was "The Sun." On this topio,
introduced by Reginald Fetcher in a
neat address, were good readings by Mies
Minnie Moore, Mre. Dobson, and Miss'
Eva Turnbull, and solos by Miss Lizzie
Sample and Miss Bessie Moore. The
President occupied the chair. New topic
cards, covering 8 months' work, were
distributed and promise many interest-
ing evenings during the Fall and Winter.
Meetings are held every Monday evening
in the School room of the Methodist
church, beginning at 7.45 o'clock.
Gown eo snE GRAVE.—Wm. Vanetone,
of Wingham, who recently returned from
a visit to the 01d Country, contracted a
cold on the ocean that resulted in his
death last Sabbath. He wae unmarried
and was only 82 years and 10 months of
age. The funeral, on Tuesday afternoon,
was largely attended. About 50 Odd
Fellows and 80 or 40 Orangemen march-
ed in the proeeesion. Rev. David Perrie
was the officiating minister. R. M.
Dickson and Jno. McAlpine represented

L 0. G. T. DISTRICT Lonou.—The
quarterly meeting of District Lodge No.
24, Independent Order of Good Tempters,
was held in the 'Temperance Hall,
Londeaboro, on Tuesday of last week,
with D. 0. T. Murdoch, Lncknow, in the
chair, and a fair representation of mem
leers present. Reports from the various
lodges indicated a falling off in member-
ship in some lodges, while the interest
was well maintained in others, The net
membership in the district is at present
770, as against 803 last quarter. Reso-
lutions were passed, recommending the
employment of an organizer, whose duty
it shall be to open up new lodges, and
visit weak ones ; also to the effeob that
every lodge in the distriob'should be
visited at least once a g0arter, by some
member of the executive committee.
Secretaries of lodges were strongly urged
to supply local papers with items of
news relatingto local temperance organ.

gentlemen delivered stirring addresses,

events are orowding each other in the
Listowel diebriot. As the train from
Palmerston to Stratford was approaching
Listowel about 2,20 p, m. Wednesday,
Francis Kelly, brother-in-law be Wm.
Norton, Listowel, and bortber to Mire. S.
Hindes and Jas, Felly, Brussels, was
killed, 'Kelly went up the track a short
time previous and when seen by Engine
Driver Endoox and Condnetor Buchanan
was leaning against a sign post' about a
mile North of the town. When the train
approached within a few yards of him
he deliberately threw himself in front of
the engine. The head was entirely separ-
ated from the body and the legs were ter-
ribly mangled. The remains were gatller.

neck by a fall.
Mrs. W. A. Christy, of Bloomfield,
was found downed.
Mr. McCarthy and Col. O'Brien spoke
at Walkerton on politioal issues.
A young woman, calling herself Miss
Eaton, of Toronto, has been victimizing
many Buffalo people.
John Warnock was found guilty of
manslaughter ab the Chatham Assizes
for the killing of John Radcliffe.
An attempt wae made Saturday about
two miles east of Mount Forest, to wreck
the C. P. R. passenger train due there at
9:30. A tie was thrown across the track,
but no serious result occurred except,
damage to the engine. No glue to the
desperadoes.
A sad case of suited° by poisoning took
place recently at Richard Bennet's in
liowiek, near Gerrie. It was Miss Mag-
gie Peterman, a young girl of about 17
years, a daughter of James Peterman,
who lives on the boundary line of Car-
rick and Culross, who thus took her own
life. She bad been employed at Mr.
Bennet's as a servant. On Oat. 11th,
when,alone in the hones, she tools Rome
green powder containing Paris green
which had been used for painbing.
When her mistress returned she was
found lying on the bed and green matter
on the floor gave evidence of her having
vomited some of the poison. She died
next day.

The first shipment of Canadian cattle
to France was landed at St. Malo on
Tuesday, 2nd inet, ex -Bruxelles. The
oonsignment numbered 400 head (two
were lost), and were shipped by Louie
Delmore, Montreal, on 'mount of a
Frenoh dealer. A second shipment will
be despatched about three weeks hence.
It is said that should the speculation,
prove successful arrangements will be
made to renew the business at the com-
mencement of next season. The cattle
were in charge of Johnny Lyndon, who
reports that though a long passage was
made, the stock was discharged in good
shape.

Cattle Market to -day there were 42 car-
loads on the two markets„ which included
807 sheep and lambs and 876 hose. There
was no buying for export, and only one
or two carloads of that class of cattle
were offered, these eventually being die.
