BEST SWEDE TURNIPS. -In connection
with East Huron Fall Show prize list
this year there are three prizes offered
for the best acre of Swede turnips. The
prizes are $3.00, 52.00 and $1.00, respec-
tively, and will be awarded during the
early weeks of October. If a goodly
number of entries are received this year
the probabilities are that this sort of
competition will be broadened next year.
Send in your entries.
HYSIENEox..-A quiet and pretty wed-
ding took place in Little Britain on Wed-
nesday, Sept. 12, when Mise Mildred
Maud Bell, daughter of Rev. Joseph Bell,
was married to Dr. James Gibson, of
Jerseyville, Ont., formerly of Brussels,
the father of the bride officiating. The
bride was charmingly gowned in satin,
with the customary veil and orange bice.
soms. After a reception at the residence
of the bride's parents, Dr, and hire. Gib-
son left on the 7,33 p. m. train for an ex-
tended trip in the East. Ton Poor offers
oongratalations.
BootlnNG THE FAm.-It 19 really a pity
that the Fall Fair will be allowed to
"suffer" because the Herald declines to
boom it. With good weather the Fair
will likely be as usual, however, on
the dates announced. Two noticeable
things are apparent in his hamoroue
paragraph, one ie his gross ignorance in
impugning the motives of others and the
other his consummate impertinence in
measuring other people's corn in hie half
bushel. Ae to hie advice to the Direators
about a "hog competition," if it were
open the red ticket would undoubtedly
hang on the ear of the Herald editor if
"squeal" were reckoned in the contest.
East Huron Fall Fair thrived before the
Herald was born and it will continue to
live after its powerful diatribes cease to
shake this planet. As to the Secretary,
he is able to speak for himself.

TOUCH IT OFF EAST Bee. MooNEY.-The
Ripley Express came to hand last week.
It is to be Independent in politics, take
ogre of the fanners, &o. Here are a few
clippings from his introduotory article :-
"Now, that we have become publisher of
the only Farmer's Newspaper of Bruce
County, we intend to Stay with it, and
the motto stamped upon our banner shall
read that in the 'lexicon of youth which
fate reserves for manhood, there is no
such word as fail.' -The Express will be
Independent in politics and neutral in
nothing. Its aim will be to represent in
an unbiased way, the untrampled and
best sentiments of the people, to deal
with matters of public importance, re.
gardless of party, heedless of corporate
power and influence, but for the general
well-being of the country, and the social
and political advancement of the people
thereof. This paper will be run on the
'Let your light so shine' principle, and
woe to the fawning hypocrite who allows
his actions to be enoh as to merit our
oribioism. We do not wish, however, to
cause any one grief, as we are here for
peace, our desire is to please, not to anger,
and we hope our efforts will meet with
general approval. We cannot be bribed
and verily we say unto you, better had
yon never been born than to try to tempt
ue with a bribe, for we hew to the line,
let the ohips fall where they may.'
G. T. R. Toone. -The new system of
payment just inaugurated by the Grand
Trunk railway. It is in some respects
an advance on the old pay car method.
It is expected to do away with the delay
in paying salaries after they are earned,
which now prevails monthly, and it will
also obviate the risks the company runs
in carrying large amounts of each about
in a car. Briefly, the new system will
require the men to go to the banks with
their pay cheques, instead of the pay car.
As it is now nearly all the pay ohegnee
for the Grand Trunk system are made
out in Montreal, and the company is un.
der the expense and risk of sending the
cash to redeem these in pay oars all over
the country. In large oentree like Tor-
onto, London and Hamilton the cash i8
drawn from looal banks, but this method
would be too unwieldy in smaller pay
centres. The new system was tried in
Montreal last week, and the result was
highly satisfaotory. Local officials think
the principal advantage will be in pre-
venting the rush to partioular• points and
the unseemly crowding under the old
system. -Saturday excursions to the lake
