HOW IT IS IN LIFE.
A rooster flies np on the fence,
Suet hear him crow 1
His satiefaotion is immense
His self possession is intense
His lusty lungs give evidence
That this is so.
Another rooster sees him tbere
And hears him crow,
With $upping wings he cleaves the air
The fence top is too smell to share
And eo they fight and scratch and tear
Till down they go.
So'tia in life—When any man
Geta eminent,
Some jealous rival trim to plan
Some way to down him if he can ,
And if he just upsets the pan
He feels content.
AN "OUT OF DATE" COUPLE.
We are "so out of dale,' they say,
,Ned and I ;
We love in an oid•faehioned way,
Long since gone by.
He says I am kis helpmate true
In everything
And I—well, 1 will own to you
He ie my king.
We met in no romantic way
'Twixt"glow and gloom ;"
Re wooed me on a Winter day,
And in --a, room ;
Yet, through life's hours of stress and
storm,
When grieie befell,
Love kept oar small home corner wal•m.
And all was well.
Ned thinks no woman like his wife—
Bub let that pass ;
Perhaps we view the dual life
Through roseate glade ;
Even if the prospect be not bright,
Wo hold it true
That heaviest burdens may grow light
When shared by two.
Upon the gilded scroll of fame,
Emblazoned fair,
I can not hope to read the name
I proudly bear;
Bnt, happy in their even flow,
The years glide by ;
We are behind the times, we know—
Ned and I.
MOTHER'S HYMNS.
Hushed, are those lips, their earthly Bong
is ended ;
The singer sloops at haat
While I sit gazing at her arm-ohair
vacant,
And think of days long past.

Those grand, sweet hymps, the Christ-
ian's consolation,
She rooks bet to and fro.

of triumph,
Or loud.toned trumpet's oval,
l3idding the people pro8bruto fall before
him,
"And orown Him --Load of All."
And tender notes, 'fillcd with melodious
rapture,

Looking at thea]: closely it is not hard to be-
lieve that some of them might have been made by
ants, so very small their step and so crooked their
way ; excitable little creatures that with all their
flurry never seem to get anywhere in partieular,
and whose whole interest seems to be that of turn-
ing 'aside from obstacles. Others again, in the
great length of their stride, remind one of the
mighty jump of the kangaroo. They are evidently
getting somewhere, and on reflection it occurs to
the observer that these must be the tracks of those
shrewd merchants who 'got there' by jumping from
one advertisement in Tliv B&ilssar,s POST to anoth-
