We then went to the tree in which Mary did (not) sleep. It is a large, knotted tree and looks its reputed age -200 years. The tradition is that Mary hid here when in Egypt o of course the foundation of the story is very flimsy. We spent the following morning in the bazaars and in the afternoon went to the tombs of the Khalifs, which extended along the E. side of the oily, and, which beyond the Citadel, are known as Tombe of the Mameltkes. A11 these tombs, most of which are of vast extent, were once richly endowed, each being provided with a numerous staff of ehekhe and attendants, who with their families resided within their pre- cincts. At the beginning of the present century the revenues of these establish- ments were confiscated, so that the tombs are now falling to rain. The descend- ants of mosque attendants and other Arabs have since taken up their quarters among the ruins, and the old necropolis has thus been converted into e, kind of suburb of Carlo, the inhabitants of which often pester strangers with their impor- tunities. A visit to the tombs is exceedingly in- teresting, particularly towards sunset, owing to the very curious and novel pic- ture they present. They may be reach- ed by carriage, but the traveller will be more independent on donkey -back. The N. E. group of these mausoleums consists of the Tomb of Sultan Abu Said Kansuweh el•Ghnri, a cube surmounted by an elongated dome, and two tomb - mosques. These two mosques which present no attraction, are now used for military purposes, and are not shown without special permission from the min- ister of war. Ae visitors are prevented by the sentry from approaching them, we leave them and proceed in a straight direotion to the Tomb -Mosque of Sultan mes and itwominarets. rhe Barkuk, uwith its twndeo rtoN. dome are the tombs of the male, and ander the S. dome those of the female members of the family. The present entrance at the S. W. corner is in a ruinous condition. The old principal entrance at the N. W. angle, now closed, has an architrave of alabaster ; the threshold is of granite, and the ceiling consists of a dome with pendentive,. The vestibule of the S.facade, through which we reach the interior, has a fine star.shaped dome. Adjoining the tomb is a oo)umn, inscribed with several bio- graphical data. A black stone here (ironstone); when rubbed on granite un. der water, is believed by the Moslems to communicate sanatory properties to the discolored water. The adjacent tomb is that of Sultan Farag, son of Barkuk. The third tombs contain the remains of a brother of Farag, who reigned seventy days only. The symmetrical plan of the edifice, its massive masonry, and the symmetrical disposition of the rows of pilasters with domes, constitute this mosque one of the most perfect examples of Arabian archi- tecture in existence, and, notwithstand- ing its ruinous condition, it still presents a most imposing appearance. Adjoining the mosque is a mausoleum with a remarkably depressed dome, next to which is the tomb of the mother of Burebey,a poorly exeouted work. The form of the openings in the latter is worthy of notice, as the arches with straight sides, planed below an acute angle, though nob uncommon, seldom co- eur quite alone. In the same street, a few paces farther to the S., we observe on the right the long Okella Kait Bay, with it8 carefully executed gateway and characteristic orna- mentation. The facade is built of mase. ive stone, and is tolerably regular, but the tmebrebiyohe are of inferior work- manship and probably of later date, The gate is mounted with large iron nails. The ground -floor is vaulted, while the upper floor has an open ceiling. The edifice was completed in the year 877 of the Hegira. A little farther to the S., projecting in an angle, is a pdblio fountain, now in ruins, also erected by Kait Bey. The shallow niches, the upper parte of which are shell•shaped, are in the form of fan- testi0 arches. Beyond this sebii is an open epee, on the right eide of which is the Tomb• Moore of Reit among the tombs of tt edifice, the finest he Khalilo, with a lefty dome and beautiful minarets. A novel sight at Saratoga just now is a scissors grinder who has all the ma- chinery required in hie line of business fastened to the handle bars of a bicycle. This enterprising grinder goes from towu to town on his wheel stopping at farm- houses along the route to sharpen knives and scissors, and he does no little amount of business along the way and in each town.
