When mother's 000kin'3er company, Wo got to keep out of the way ; If we even peek in the kitoben door She's sure to tarn and say : "Don't come botkerin' now, you boys ; Haven't you eyes to see 7 I can't have young ones under my feet When I'm 000kin' fer company I" When mother's cookie' fer company, Our girl jaet bas to fly, To rake the fire and wallop the eggs, An' baste the meat right spry ; She'd like to Sate, if ebe did but date, Far cranky an' °roes is she— But that wouldn't go with mother, you know, When she's 000kin' fer company. When mother's 000kin' for company, An' pap Domes home from the store, He stops his whistlin' on the poroh An' steps real soft on the floor ; He eats cold vittals an' kind o' smiles, An' says, don't bother fer me— t ain't pertickeler, mother, a bit, When you're 000kin' fer company." "When mother's 000kin' fer company," Sez I to Sammy Crane, "She lets us take the parlor chairs To make a railroad train; The table covers fer Injuu tents— She's good ae good can be, But you bet we've got to keep out of her way When she's 000kin' ter company 1" When mother's 000kin' fer company, We know what's in to bake, just by smellin'—'shout any tellin'— Crullers, epioe beef or Dake. But when mother gets on her beady dress, An' the minister comes to tea-- You'd ea—You'd never know her fer the woman that were A-000kin' fer company ! THE TRIALS OF AN EDITOR. How often we think when reading the news, That a thing of lees interest one never did see, But Sir Critic, reflect ore you make a noise on That one man's meat may be another man's poison. And, let you persist in your steady de mals, We'll give you a few of an editor's trials ; First—a pretty young lady sprightly and fait, With Tan Pon in her hand waltzes up to a chair, And hastily glancing o'er all that ehe aaw, She throwe it aside with a muttered pshaw ! No marriages hote— 1 think it is queer, When there's ever so many, They don't publish any. Here's poetry, And battles, Sketches, And soiges, And tales, And Iaw•suite, Without ending, A•pending ; But no pio.nioe, or concerts, or parties for me— Then a nice young mau with Dane and moustache, Who certainly thinks he is cutting a dash, Looks over the list of plays and soirees, As if vainly trying'his fancy to please, in theatres, In mow, Circuses, And phases, Operas, In bouquets, Balls, And calls, And finally wonders whateditore mean By printing a paper not fit to be seen. Sentimental young lady next plek8 up the paper And reads by the light of a dim burn' Ing Japer,. And wonders if lines here addressed to Mise 7,3eiia, Were not written to her by Sema Weyer fellow Whole pretty and witty, and leaned and wise ; But she stops in surprise et the "dark hates! eyes," For her's are dean bine, What a pity 'Ile true, For now, Mr, Editor, 'Pis all blamed on you,. What apeeeliee, And Jawing,. And sermons, And jawing, And news, And clawing, By despatch, To match ; But of sketches or tales not one Dan I See— What hind of a man mdsb the editor bet Next a grave politioian, who with dig. nity glowe, Adjuste hie gold epectaoles over his nose, Telcos a huge pinch of snuff before be proceeds, Then opens the paper and leienrely reads Of breaches OE Parliamont And epeoohas, houses, And foreign Of railways, Reports, And courts, And says, as he reads the last column of war, What a strange kind of people these editors are, These rhymes and these love stories so for to print ; If it wonld do thein any gooreI would give them a hint, Now, a prim old maid rho paper espies, And, now, holding it carefully off from her eyes, And frequently muttering "la l and du tell 1" She manages some way to read very well— The marriages, Tlie robberies, Aooidents, And murders, Suioidee, All in Deaths, A breath. And, finishing, wonders what sort of a blunder The whole of community's laboring under, To support such a paper whose print is so small She wonders how some people read it at all, Advertiser, eager for notioe and gain, Is determined to try the effect of a cane On the editor's baok—for see what you've done, In a passion he Dries here's B. F. & G., Who pay you no more for their notioe than me, Stook on the inside, while I, to be sure, Must be put out of sight—who could lo endure Next, an angry contributor, eager for fame, I'm ruined, sir, ruined -my suooess, sir, ie o'er, So many mistakes were ne'er heard be- fore ; Look here at this "Sonnet Add reeled to my Lady," You've made it "A Bonnet and Dress for my Baby." Don't talk of my writing and say it was that, You're an editor, sir, bat no gent—thab ie flat. The farmer complains that his Drops are neglected, While so tnnoh time is spent guessing who'll be elected, The minister says it should be more sedate, And not so much wasted on matters of state ; And thousands of other complaints are made known, Which the editor's-baok has to bear all alone ; But the worst of it is, they all join in Baying Such a paper as this can't be print without paying. MULTOM IN PARVO. All is but lip wisdom which wants ex- perience. Not one false man but does unaccount- able mischief. There is little influence where there is no great sympathy. The greatest difdoulties lie where we are not looking for them. I take the true definition of exercise to be labor without weariness. Fixed to no spot is happiness ; 'tie no- where to he found, or everywhere. The oovetous man never has money ; the prodigal will have none shortly. The world is a soene of changes ; to be constant in nature were inconstancy. He who brings ridicule to bear against truth finds in his hand a blade without a hilt. Love with old men is the sun upon the snow—it dazzlee more than it warms them. If our zeal were true and genuine, we should be mote angry with a sinner than with a heretic. It is rumored at Cornwall, Ont., that the two mills of the Canadian Cotton (colored) Company—the Stormont and Canada—will shortly be closed down.
