Standard says :—The trial of S. H.
Laird, adjourned from Tuesday week,
was taken up again on Tuesday, and
summarily dismissed. There was no-
thing whatever to implicate 11ir. Laird,
excepting remarks uttered by himself in
a jest. to the Drat plane it ie not known
whether Matheson is dead although we
incline to the belitf that bis body now
lies beneath the waters of the lake. Un-
til that was proven it was untimely and
unjust to fasten a charge of murder up-
on any person. The theory that be met
with foul play at the bands of any per-
son other than himself is discredited in
Kincardine, the general opinion being
that if be is now dead he met his death
by accidentally or intentionally falling
into the river basin. There is no evi-
dence to show that be had a quarrel with
any of the boys who attended the dance,
nor is there any evidence to show that he
had money enough on his person to just-
ify the theory that he was murdered for
his money. The whole affair is a pro-
found mystery, which the parents and
other relatives of the missing man have
vainly endeavored to solve. Mr. and
Mrs. Matheson and family have the heart.
felt sympathy of all in the awful anxiety
which they most feel over his uncertain
fate, and the active co-gperation of many
kind Mende in their efforts to ascertain
the cause of his sudden disappearance.
REQUIE5CaT IN RACE.—The Gilroy, Cal.,
Evening Telegram says :—"Wm. Rut-
ledge Metoalf was born December 23rd,.
1867, in the oity of Guelph, Ontario
Canada, where he lived until he attained
man's estate. From Guelph he removed
to Pullman, where he was for five years

years after he had labored here he book
unto himself the wife who now mourns

ers, and also a member of the Painters'
and Decorators' Association of America,
and at that plane a little over a year ago
he contracted a severe oold which was
followed by pneumonia. A lung weak-
ness was then developed from which he
never recovered. Last August be and
his wife came to Gilroy, thinking the
change might prove beneficial. Cali-
fornia climate, dootors, nor drugs were of
any avail—the fatal malady had too firm-
ly grasped its hold upon its victim, and
at a quarter past twelve Sunday night,
June 10th, after much pain and Buffering,
the loving busbaed and kind father pass-
ed away. He bore hie long illness with
remarkable fortitude ; he WAS very pati•
ant, kind, and uncomplaining, perfectly
resigned when death hovered near to
meet hie God. Of his far away father,
mother, brother, sister and dear friends,
he spoke, never forgetting any who had
been kind to him, bidding all goodbye.
In Ofe, he made many warm friends, who
will be grieved to learn of his untimely
death. He leaves a father, mother and
brother at Guelph, Canada, a sister in
Chteago, and a widow and a little child
here. Dr. and Mrs. Harcourt, of Gilroy,
uncle and aunt of Mrs. Metcalf, and
Harry Metcalf, of San Francisco, brother
of the deceased, are here to comfort the
