purohased a new variety of potato, "The
Earliest of all," which be planted this
week. Three pounds cost $1,80. Mr.
Mills, the seedsman of New York State,
offers a piano for the largest yield grown
by any purchaser, the potatoes to be
planted in the presence of two witnesses
and dug and weighed before the same
persons. Mr. Farrow intends competing.

Two Brussels youths were engaged
hauling out chips from a yard with a
horse and wagon and dumping them over
the river bank. The process was to back

LEGAL. -At the Court of Appeal on
Tuesday the case of Nightingale, vs.
Western Assurance Co. was heard. Mo•
earthy, Q. 0., and W. M. Douglas for
the defendants, appealed from the re-
port of the County Judge of Horon upon
a reference to him to acertain the amount
of lose by fire of the plaintiff upon a stook
of goods in a shop in the Town of Brae -
eels insured by the defendants. The ref•
res found that the plaintiff's loos was a.
bout $4,000. The appeal was against
the finding of the referee that there was
no fraud or false swearing in the proofs
of loss. W. R. Meredith, Q. C., end Gar -
row, Q. C., for the plaintiff, opposed the
appeal and supported a croee•appeal
from the report.

proved the appearance of his property on
Princess street by the erection of a wire
fence along the front. -Mrs. McLean of
the same street, has had a lawn laid out
and other improvements nude. This
street will soon have the neatest plots in
town. -3. & J. Livingston have had a new
picket fence put up on the East side of
their lot, corner of King and Maple
streets. The R. C. ahuroh in this place
is in the hands of the painters this week.

demand for cattle today, with receipts
somewhat smaller than usual. Total off-
erings, 40 oar loads, inoluding 94 head of
sheep and lambs and 700 hogs. Export

hest picked lots of butobere cattle, 330 ;
cars of the best brought 8ta to 36o ; medi-

EAST BUFFALO, N. Y., May 16. -Cattle
-Quiet today ; 24 loads received, con-
signed through ; only cattle on sale here,
a few bunches of cows and coarse steers
went to city trade. Sheep and Iambs -
Active trade of yesterday about cleaned
up the reoeipte of sale stock, which, with
late arrivals, swelled the amount to 117
cars. No fresh sale stook received the
last 24 hours ; market steady and firm at
yesterday's quotations, with aped de-
