Fon.—Several members of the town
Band were in the council chamber last
Tuesday evening where a meeting was to
be held to talk over Band business. The
fire was not burning as briskly as desired
and the fateful coal oil can was brought
into rsquisitiou. It was a four gallon
can about two thirds full of oil. The
flame caught the oil and quicker than
flash their was an explosion and the
burning liquid was shattered about, the
bottom being blown out of the can. In
en instant the floor and walla of the
Council Chamber were on fire. The
lire alarm was responded to quickly and
the engine taken to the river and steam
was up in short order. A few thought-
ful persons took time by the .forelook and
with pails and wash tubs carried
water and stopped the progress of the
flames. D. Strubb was burned quite
badly about the faoe by the oil in the
explosion and A. Beaker, C. Sager and
C. Gates also received a reminder of the
aooident. It was well the results were'
not more serious. The Council cham-
ber walla, ceiling, &0. are a8 black as the
pots and will have to have a complete
renovation in additionto receiving re•
pairs. The fire made its way up.stairs
throagh the register but was headed off
by prompt aotion. Had nob energetic
efforts been put forth a big fire might
have been the result as there was quite
a gale blowing from the west at the time.
The Connoil Chamber was damaged to
the amount of about $40,00, which claim
will be settled forthwith by the Mercan-
tile Insurance Go. The necessary re.
pairs will be attended to as soon as pos.
sable, and will ioolude a new door, some
