The training is carried out on very much the same lines as that whichthe v o r wax dogs now employed in many of the continental armies have to undergo; that is to say, the can - bit pupil is taught to defraud the cus- toms thkooiglh being beaten by men dressed in the garb of a revenue offi- cer. From all places and corrners the faked official emerges upon the dog, and thrashes it brutally until it learns to dodge any. one in the uniform with all the ability of a human being. When properly trained, the dog which is ,gettetnlly of the collie breed, Will bring a heavy price, and consid- ering the amount of illegitimate money it will eventually be instrumental in putting into its employer',e pocket, this Ls only natural, Lace and silk are the chief articles carried, and are con- cealed in little patokages fastened be- low the bealst'n stomach by moans of a strap during its journey across the frontier. If the clog falls into the hands of the austorn officials there ie no clew ala to whom it belongs, so that the real offenders often go unpunished. That no small amount of smuggling le dtkne in this way is proven by the fact that last year several million triunes' worth of articles upon which tun 1 duty should have been paid found their way into the market untaxed, and over 'n cls 300 smuggh g tats wore naught. by the officials. There Is a 2 -guinea rank a 1 -guinea rank, and the demo- cratio 15s. rank. Between these three ranks are the greatest oonceivable dif- ferences. If your carriage has four or more wheels and is fitted to be drawn by two or more horses, or even mules, then you inust pay 312 2s, a year for il. • But if your carriage has four or more wheels and is only drawn by one horse pr mule, you can have the thing for 1 guineas year. And if perchance you cannot live up to the four -wheeled style, but are content with a carriage or•cart, if leas than four wheels, then you can get off with a yearly pay- ment of 15s. That is the cheapest style the govermnent can tolerate, Hackney oarriages come under this head and pay the 15s. Of course, the 15s. carriages are greatest in number. Last year 816,485 of them paid 15s apiece, in addition to 125,971 hackney carriages. People who ride in one-horse four -wheeled carriages come next in number with 7(3,208 carriages, The lucky people who ride in carriages with four wheels or more and drawn by two or more horses number 49,307. Altogether those who ride in car- riages and carts pay 3:510,890 a year for the privilege of riding on wheels instead of walking. But the hackney carriage and the two wheeled cart pay three-fifths of that amount. What is a carriage without armor- ial bearings? Absolutely slyleless. But if you wish armorial bearings painted on your carriage you must pay £12 25 for permission, as well as something Ito the painter for his skill. If you wish to use armorial bearings in any other way -say on your note- paper-then otepaper-then a guinea a year will suf- fice, More people use bearings in this way than on carriages, Last year £81,- 00e was received for permission to put armorial bearings on carriages and £43,438 to use them in other ways. In this way is made up the 8140,- 363, whish is paid each year for per- mission to live in style. But It is only when that is paid that the real ex- pense begins. TELEPHONES IN STOCKHOLM. Pain, accompanied by nausea and flatu- lence follows the taking of food i nutrition being arrested, the blood becomes impoverished, and then appear various nervous affections, such as headache, dizziness, sleeplessness, neuralgia, hysteria, and the collection of distressing symptoms to which the name of "nervous debility" and "heart trouble" has been applied, The liver is speedily affected, and then we have constipation, foul tongue, offensive breath, depression of spirits and sallow skin.
