Oaly 50 cents at Deadman'e Drug Store, "ALL ABOARD." ['Continued from iso page.] Ontario and Northwestern Canada to the seaboard ; And, whereas grain could be carried more cheaply from Fort William via Goderich and the proposed extension of the Guelph Jnno t oi Railway to Lake e Ontario at Toronto, or by rail to the seaboard, than from any other point upon the shores of Lake Huron and the Georgian Bay ; and whereas the Domin. ion Government have expended and are expending large sums of money in the deepening of Goderich harbor, the full benefit of which expenditure cannot be obtained without additional railway facili- ties : Resolved, Lliat this meeting requests the Toronto Board of Trade and the Mayor and Council of Toronto to co operate with other tnuuioipalitiee in uei0g their influence with the 0. P. R. to con- struct the proposed railway, and to peti- tion the Dominion Government to grant substantial assistance by way of bonuses to the proposed railway." Mr. Heaton in moving the adoption of the resolution, recalled the fact that Iast Spring there was a dismission as to the oonstruotioi of an air line from Toronto to Oollingwood. The Toronto Board of Trade were evidently so muoh wedded to that scheme that they had shut their eyes to the superior advantages of this line to Goderiuh. It was important that we should not only educate our own people on this point, but the people of Toronto as well. He was informed that they, sea whole, were not so favorable to the Ool- lingwood route, as the President of the Board of Trade, Mr, Kemp. He was a forcible man, and lost no opportunity of expressing his views. Members who did not agree with him remained silent, because they wanted to be loyal to the President. The argument in favor of the Collingwood line rests on a study of the map. An air line to Collingwood would give the most direct line frotn Fort Wil- liam to Toronto, according to the map, but the question was by what route you can ship your grain most cheaply, and the Goderioh line had advaubages over the Oollingwood one. Whereas, by the atlas it appears to be shorter, by the (hart the route wee really longer. On slow down on the Georgian Bay the veseels`had to make detours to Collingwood nod Owen Sound. To Goderich they oonld take an absolutely straight course, Then vessels had to slow down on the Georgian Bay because of the shallows. Again, fnaur. moo was cheaper in Goderioh. Further, Goderich harbor opened earlier and clos- ed later than those on Georgian Bay, so that vessels can start out earlier in the Spring and can come to Goderioh iu the Fall when they cannot come to Georgian Bay points. The superiority of Goderioh in the saving of time and distance meant a saving in coal and wages. In every respect it was the cheaper route, Goder. ioh harbor was now complete, 8o that yes. sets drawing 17} feet of water had come there to Winter, On the other hand, it would coat hundreds of thousands of dollars to blast out a channel of rook into Collingwood and to make a proper har- bor, These points should be pressed [Continued next week.] The Guelph Daily Herald of December 8117, says editorially ;— The large, enthusiaabio and iefluenbial convention held in the City Hall, Thurs- day, may have its ooneummation in the much desired extension of the 0. P. R. from thie oily to Goderioh. The dale. gates present at the meeting were all men of enterprise and business ability and ooietituts a force behind the project which will undoubtedly result in some Railway Ootnpatiy the advisability of having the clue extended at once. The company have now no apparent mime for further delay in the fultiimeut of their promise to the city when the ' GuelphJlutetioa was built, They, at that time, placed themselves, morally, under obligation to extend the road se soon as curtain lines, then under cod• sLruotion, were oompletod, These litres are now finished, and the city and those interested in the extension may justly look for the completion of the road. Asids from their moral obligations to Guelph's citizens, it is in the interests of the Canadian Pacific ltailway Company to make the extension at once, The °hurter in the poseossion of the Guelph Juuctiou Railway directors for this ex. tenete0 expires in 11301, and the chances are that it will not be renewed by the Government unless sumo feasible scheme la presented for the immediate construe. tion of the road, If ,hie charter became invalid, the Government would be in a good position to retest) the railway subsidy of 03,200 per mile. The deepening of the Goderiuh bari.'r, at a heavy expenditure, for the reeepan.0 at that port of grain and other freight traffic from the West ; the growth of the population and inoroase in the mauu• factoring industries of the Western por- tion of the provinoe, and the altogether favorable conditions for carrying out the project should enable the committee to present a strong case to the C. P. R. Company in favor of the extension. The convention acted wisely in avoid- ing a dieeussion on the route of the pro. posed road and in deciding upon the con oentration of their efforts to persuade the company to build the line. After this has been decided the question of the route can be threshed out by those con- cerned. With the matter in the hands of the strong committee appointed at the con. vection Thursday, we have reason to ex. peat good results.
