WANDEn00e Home. -After an absence
of six months Alex. McKay and John G.
Crich, residents of this town, have return.
ed from the Atlin dietriot, wbere they
went to Beek their fortunes in that land
which we read eo muoh in the newapap•
ere about ae a place where rioh gold mines
are waiting for someone to develop them.
Induced by these false reports these gen-
tlemen left town about the middle of
April, and journeyed by rail to Seattle,
where, after bnying their supplies, they
otaited with thirteen other men by boat
to Mims., here they lauded and packing
their goods made for their deetination
by way of the Ohiloott pass to Lake
(Bennett. From there they proceeded to
walk over the foe bound obain of lakes,
but when about 50 miles from their
journey's end, the foe began to break up,
thus iooreaeing the almost unsurmount-
able bardebipe they were then enduring,
After several of the horses bad gone
through and been pulled out, with a great
amount of labor and the narrow escapes
of several of the men, the party deoided
to pot into shore and clamp until the ion
was gone. They were camping for nearly
three weeke before they could proceed to
raft thomeelves and supplies to the end of
their perilone journey. Mr. Orioh stated
that they bought flour in Seattle for $1.50
a Back, and it coat them $3.00 a sack when
they reached Arlin, where they found
they could have purohaeed it for muoh
lees, because ao many parties had oame
in, and being disappointed with the min.
try, had sold their provisions and quit
the place, and with the steady influx of
mining parties leaves more euppliee than
there are people to consume them. Hay
is worth from $200 to 6250 a ton, and it
le almost impossible for man to secure
proper food for their horses. Mr. Orioh
states that it is a pitiable but common
eight to see bodies of dead horses strewn
along both tildes of the trail at close in-
tervals. The Atlin dietriot is a most
mountainous country. Everywhere the
eye can rest is high barren mountains,
the tops of which areperpetually crowned
with snow. It is only at rare intervals
that a plane pan be found fit to till, and
at the most it is three or four Dome is a
valley that will grow cereal, and veget-
ables, which, when matured, ere of the
poorest quality. The voine of gold are
so small that it does not pay to mine it,
and there are hundreds of 34811 to -day in
that country who would work for their
board if they could get it. Many would
be glad to leave the plaoe, but are foroed
to stay, bemuse they have not the mane
to pay their way out. On seeing the
condition of the people, and the poor
prospects ahead of them, our two travel•
lore decided to posh on to Dawson city,
but they met Bo many men aiming from
there tint they h determined to return
y
home. On the return journey they went
to the head of lake Bennett, where the
trail divides, one going through the Ohil.
oott Pass to Dyea, and the other through
the White Pass to Skagway. The latter
one was chosen by the party. A railway
rune through this pave now raaohing
Skagway, the party embarked, and reach-
ed Victoria without further difficulties.
Here Mr. McKay and Mr. Oriel] eeparat-
ed, as the latter stayed in the city for
sonic time. On hearing that one of the
transportation boats from Dawson and
Atlin was in the harbor, Mr. Crich .went
down to the dook to see the passengers'
land. Most of the then were unable to
walk, end had to be parried off the boat,
being 00 weak from want of proper food,
and its a000mpaniment disease, yet when
the papers gave the report of the oaptain,
it wag aoeerted that the boat brought
down three million dollars worth of gold.
It ie an oft repeated story on the ooaot
that the Navigation 00,0 carry stranded
tnen free from the Northern districts, on
oondition that they sign a doeunlont, tell-
ing the amount of gold they brought with
them, when probably they would not
(lave enough money to buy their meale.
