Mr. Edge has seen some glorinu. revivals of God's work, especially on Paisley and Hanover oircuite. He was heartily elected to the Presidency of the London Conference, and has proved himself a very acceptable and useful presiding officer. I. O. 0, F, (.rand Lodge. The forty-fifth annual convention of the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows was held in Toronto, the Grand Master, John 0. Farewell, of Whitby, prrsiding. The organization now numbers 1,200,. 000.th ince start S a a ar over 2 200 0 have been initiated, the siak, the widow and orphan bave been relieved 900,000 times. Over $70,000,000 has i en expended in relief sines 1880, and over $70,000,000 of assets bave gone through the treasury. The number of subordinate lodges is now over 12,000. In hie report the Grand Master spoke of the year as having been a prosperous one. Non-payment of dues has given considerable annoyance. A central or consolidated fund and the question of aid to weak lodges were dis- cussed by the report. The freedom from litigation was favorably commented upon. The Grand Secretary said that the past year had been most suooeseful, there having been an iuureaee of over 500 in the membership. The sum paid out as relief and death claims was 82,116,317 18, and the memberebip on June 801,11, 1890, was 28,452. The total assets for the year, $1,051,280.29 ; total liabilitiee, 874,994,90 ; assets over liabilities, 4979,- 206.43. The Grand Treasurer reported an expenditure for On year of $18,280.28, with a balance of $123.38. The following officers were alae tea for the ensuing year :—Grand Master, Dr. J. H. MaLorg, Woodatook ; Deputy Graud Master, 0, 3. Lewis, Chatham ; Grand Secretary, J. 13. King, Toronto, re-eleob- ed ; Grnad Treasurer, W. J. Lyman, Brookville ; Grand Audi- tor, Chas, Paokert, Stratford, re-elected ; Director of Oddfellowe Home, W. H. Hoyle, M. P. P„ Oanniugton. A motion by A. H. Blaokaby, Gelb, to rescind the graduated scale of dues and benefits and to substitute another was adopted. A committee was appointed to suggest a means of reducing the expenses of Grand Lodge, The way of doing this, it was thought would be to hold the Grand Lodge meeting in a central plane, The finance committee t rt es re ort d that the financial position of the order ie bettor than last year. Offers to provide a free site for the proposed Oddfellows' Home were reoeived trona Beaverton and Coiling - wood. The fund for the institution of the home amonnle to $7,000, The Greed Lodge of Oddfeilows adopt- ed the reoommendation that the age of admission be reduced from 21 to 18 years, and instruoted the representatives to the Sovereign Grand Lodge to support the matter when it comes before the latter body. The degree of Rebekah petitioned for greater latitude in regard to their organ- ization, and for the right to make their own dioisions on points of law. The application was refused, and the Grand Master will continue, as bereto- fore, 56 adjudloabe upou matters affecting Rebekah degrees. The lodge at Port Arthur asked to be allowed to separate from the Ontario Grand Lodge and join the Manitoba body. The privilege was refused, on the reH port of a epeoial committee, a decision t which the representatives from Port t Arbhne said they would loyally accept. r The Grand Ledge unanimously en - dosed the Grand Master's ruling that brethern must nob appeal to the order for private aseistanoe, The next meeting will be held at Hamilton, the Ambitious Oity having carried the convention away from Owen Sound, 3. E. Farwell, retiring Grand Master, was appointed representative to Sovereign Grand Lodge, whioh convenes in Detroit in September. The degree of Rebekah, oonsisiting of lady members of the order, met in the I. 0. 0. F. hall at the corner of College and Youngs etreete and remained in session all day, Sister Aima Brill, of Guelph, presiding. The ladies, whose organize• tion was until recently y known as the Daughters of Rebekah, form an im or• tant auxiliary to the order. They have done splendid work in promoting the movement of the Oddfellowe' home. The reports preeonted by Sister Brill, Sister 'Wardell, of Ridgeway, Secretary, and Sister N. Dobson, Chatham, Treasurer, were eminently satisfactory, showing a steady inorease fn memberebip and a soaud financial ',tending. The reports were adopted, and the following officers were eluded for the ensuing year President, Sister N. Aoklend, Brookville; Viae•Preeident, Sister Bascombe, Galt ; Warden, Sister N. Harvey, Deseronto ; Sem•stary, Sinter Wardell, re-elected ; Treasurer, Sister N, Dobson, Chatham, reelected. following the usual oustom the following nominations for next ysar'e eleatious were reoeived •—Prseident, Sister Bascombe ; Vioe-President, Sietere Pearce, Pulford, Harvey, MoWatere, Stairs and Lennox • Warden, Sisters Edgar and Taylor ; Secretary, Sister Wardell ; Treasurer, Sister Dobson. THE MEMBER BUR EMT JIUJSON. The Clinton New Era, whose proprietor is the M. P. for West Huron, reoently published the following concerning Dr. McDonald, the popular member for East Huron :—'The popular and able representative for Emit Huron, in the Dominion Home, Dr. McDonald,' return- ed from Ottawa on Saturday lard, and will now devote himself in the interim to his professional duties. He takes a pretty active part in parliamentary matters, and ie not only regarded as one of the ablest speakers on the government side of the House, but au one of the fairest in debate also. He is not a man who resorts to personal abuse, believing that more is a000mplished by appeals to reason than prejudice. So popular is the doetor with hie fellow•members that they would do almost anything for him. This WAS shown during the past session in a little oirouenstanoe that transpired, and which is now made public for the first time. An important and respon, sible position in the Civil Service was valiant ; some of the doctor's friends in the House thought he woe just the man to fill it, and without his consent or knowledge, or without even finding out if he wished to retire from public life, they waited upon the Minister who had con. trol of this particular vaeanoy, and urged the doctor's olaim to it, The Minister immediately admitted that Dr. MaDon• aid would make an excellent offoer for the position, but as it had been already promised to another medial man, be oSuld make no change, We do not wish the electors of East Huron to think that their able representative wished to retire, for he knew nothing whatever of the oiroametanee until it was all over, and 055 in no way a party to it, but Itis Riedel fitnesa tem mob that the members felt he not only deserved the position, hut was eminently qualified to fill it. °wean', he will continue to represent hie constituency with oredit to bimaelf, o the satiefaotion of every Liberal in the iding, and no doubt acceptably to many ho are on the other side of politica. s M. 0.
