OVER THE ROUTE.
A.14.'17",rp's Trip Prean Guelph in
(oaertch,
Tho Guelph Daily Mercury of Aug. 18,
Bays :—"Ald. Thorpe arrived home from
Ids nine days' drive, last evening, after
a very pleasant trip which combined both
pleasure and business. The principal
feature of 416. Thorpe's trip to the
Northern villages and towns was to gather
as much information as possible in regard
to the extension of the Guelph Junction
Railway from this pity to Goderioh. The
worthy Alderman takes an especial
interest in this matter, and has gained
considerable information and knowledge
that will eventually prove valuable to the
projections of the movement.
.4. Meroury reporter had an interesting
one with him this morning for a few
minutes and gleaned from him the fol-
lowing : Mr, Thorp started on the
Southern road to Goderioh and returned
over the Northern route. Among the
villages embraced in the Southern route
are the following which he visited in the
order named ; Little Germany, Cones-
togo, between St. Jaoob'e and Elmira,
Hawkesville, Linwood, Millbank, Milver-
ton, Monkton, Walton, Harlook, Londes•
borough and Holcnesville to Goderioh.
The return journey home was made over
the Norbhorn route, which inoludes the
following places Saltford, Carlow,
Auburn, Blyth, Brussels, Ethel, Atwood,
Listowel, Traleo, Hasson, Dorking, Mao.
ton, Yatton, Elmira, West Montrose,
Winterbourne and Weiaenbergto Guelph.
The number of miles travelled by Mr.
Thorpe over the proposed routes aggre-
gated 250 milee and 000npied nearly ten
days.
He says everybody reads the Guelph
papers along the lines, in fact, every line
that relates to the subjeob of extension,
and are extremely anxious to have the
matter carried ou6 to a successful issue.
IIs called upon all the reeves, conn.
oillors and prominent business 1nen on
his trip along the way, and aetaertained
their feelings, and almoat to a man all
were deeply interested in the project.
40 some points where they are already
oonneoted with the G. T. R. they felt
satisfied to let well enough alone, as they
were drawing from a country that, if the
0. P. R. went through, it would take
trade away from them, But if the C. P.
R. movement from Goderioh to Guelph
was au assured fact, they would do all they
could to aesiet.
Mr. Thorpe also took a note of the
populabion of each place of interest,
financial standing of the towuehipe and
rari00e buaineee enterpriser' already
existing in snob places, and that would
likely be the result df the road wag bisalt,
A6 Monkton bhere is considerable quan-
tity of marl, out of which a form of
cement is manufactured, and which, no
doubb, could be developed into a large and
paying industry, leeat deposits, too, aro
quite common in Monkton, which adjoins
Dllioo township, where pad is now being
manufactured.
A number of the business men along
the route told hien if the road went
through they would ergot elevators along
the principal points of the line, and also
that bhoy knew that brickyards and

very fine indeed, The farmers were more
than pleased with results, the exception
being in fall wheat. The principal grains
they grow are oats, pears, barley, wheat,
flax, rye and an odd field of buckwheat'.
On the Northern route many a fine field
of anailago porn was noticed, and oleo on
the ems Memo would be seen a silo.
Around Brussels, LiebaWel, Atwood,
Milverton, Monkton, and Walton there
are a great many aheeoo factories. In
Listowel he mot J, W. Scott, who enter.
tained him highly aad gave him much
information concerting the cheese pro.
dnne and the means adopted in its dlo•
posh].
Mr. Thorpe fouled very few diffionitios,
geographically speaking, in the way of
oonetruotmg the road to Godorielr, It is
quite true liked there are some objections
tint
t a exist over Moth proposed rotten,
but those Worn unimportant, generally
epealcing. After leaving Guelph th
weary id ooneidarably rolling land unci
Ctnostogo ao reached, After passing
through thee village the laud ie fiat unbil
you pass Lonclasborougli, some fifteen
miles from Goderioh. There the land i
more hilly, There the Maitland river i
touched, which is very wide and deep
the embankments ou emelt side being
very high. In going straight to Godericl
yon would have to cross the river twice.
The width would be from the market
diode to Dooley's store, and the depth of
the banks ae high to the flag•etaff on the
City hall. He therefore, upon reaching
the river, went South by way of Holmes
villa, and around the bend of the river
and i0to Goderioh parallel with the G.
T. R. ou the South side. This would
mean four or live miles out of a direct
course. This might be a saving, as the
cost of building bridges would be very
expensive across the river.
In Goderioh he met almost all the
principal man, and found them similar
in their views and statements to those
mat both going and returning. The
opinion ie uuanimoue that the people
want the road, but they look to Guelph
to take the iuitiative in the matter.
They are willing to back up any proposal
or project that will emery the issue ou6.
Air. Thorpe explained to many, in answer
to enquiries, that he considered Guelph
had almost done its share in building the
line from Guelph Junction to the city, a
distance of sixteen miles, at a consider-
able cost to the city, and which has prov-
ed
rowed anything but remunerative so far,
Ald. Thorpe intends, at the next meet-
ing of the City Council and Board of
Trade, to lay considerable information
before the members, ile the hope that
renewed steps will be taken by the an.
thorities to merry this project through.
In order to carry out Mlle matter he
feels that a determined effort must be
made, or the object will never be realized.
Ald. Thorpe remarked that all along
the jonrney he was met with and re.
calved the kindest hospitality and attn.
