Trunk management had increased the
wages from 51 to 51.10 a day of the sec-
tion men ou the main lines and heavy
freight lines, The increase goes into
effect on the middle division, where
about 800 section men ere employed.
Two thirds of these will get the augment-
ed pay. The lines on the middle division
to whioh the increase applies are those
between the following points :—Toronto
and the Sarnia tunnel, Suspension Bridge
and the Sarnia tunnel, Toronto and Hain-
ilton, Fort Erie and Kingeoourt, Fort
Erie and Stratford. No increase has
been granted section men on the branch
lines.—The local Grand Trunk Railway
authorities were notified that Geo. T.
Bell has been appointed first assistant
passenger agent of the Grank Trunk
Railway Syetem, with headquarters at
Cbioago. Mr. Bell is at present first
assistant general passenger and tioket

Mies Edyth Howell, who has been
holidaying with her aunt, Mre. S. T.
Plum, in Bruseele, returned to New
Hamburg, Thursday of last week. She
was in rather poor health on coming here
but gained a pound a week daring her
stay of 8 weeks. Not a bad recommend-
ation for Brussels and locality.

About 10 o'olook the attention of Seoul
Mate Benwell, who was on watch at the
time, was attracted by an explosion
ooming from No, 2 hold, and on investi-
gation fire was dieoovered among the
merohandiee with whioh the bold was
stored. Efforts were immediately made
to extinguish the flames. The hold was
filled fall of steam, and afterwards water
was pumped in. The compartment in
whioh the fire took place has not yet
been cleared, so that the full extent of
the damage cannot be ascertained. As
the vessel is oonetrooted of steel, it is
expected that the injury to her will be
slight, but the cargo will be badly dama-
ged by water. The origin of the fire is
unknown. Some porters who were at
work loading the boat during the day
affirm that they noticed a peculiar smell
like fire in the afternoon, but whether it
was the fire that caused the explosion or
the explosion mused the fire is only a
matter of conjecture.
