MoDougall, had a narrow escape from destruotion by fire, Thursday, July 20, while lying in the docks at Owen Sound, About 10 o'olook the attention of Seoul Mate Benwell, who was on watch at the time, was attracted by an explosion ooming from No, 2 hold, and on investi- gation fire was dieoovered among the merohandiee with whioh the bold was stored. Efforts were immediately made to extinguish the flames. The hold was filled fall of steam, and afterwards water was pumped in. The compartment in whioh the fire took place has not yet been cleared, so that the full extent of the damage cannot be ascertained. As the vessel is oonetrooted of steel, it is expected that the injury to her will be slight, but the cargo will be badly dama- ged by water. The origin of the fire is unknown. Some porters who were at work loading the boat during the day affirm that they noticed a peculiar smell like fire in the afternoon, but whether it was the fire that caused the explosion or the explosion mused the fire is only a matter of conjecture.
