lemma DAY,—In common with many
other eaboole Brussels took advantage of
the request made by the Minister of
Education and observed Empire Day on
Tuesdayafternoon 0 of this
week in a
most loyal and enthneiastio manner, The
Union Jack o0cupied a prominent plane
and with the maple boaghe made a very
pleasant contrast. At 2 o'clock the large
eohool room of the Primary Department
was crowded to overflowing, Prinoipal
Cameron 000npied the chair and perform.
ed the duties very skilfully. The pro.
gram opened with the "Maple Leaf"
chortle, which was most enbhuainetioally
sung ae were all the selections given by
the pupils, lead by Mise Jean Ritchie.
Rev. S. 3. Arlin was the first speaker and
dealt pointedly with "The extent of
the British Empire," giving figures to
ebow that the total square miles were
8,694,898, with an aggregate population
of 286,866,699, outside of the proteotor.
ales. The figures go to very clearly prove
the vastness of the British Empire non.
etitrbing 1/6 of the world. "The Bettie
of Queenston Heights" was cleverly re.
oiled by Arthur Arlin. "Canada and
the Empire" was to have been taken by
Rev. G. J. Abey but in his absence at
Toronto Mr. Cameron gave a very neat
presentation of Canada's just claims of
being the gem of the Empire. The
school sang "Where the sugar Maeda
grows" ; "Flag of the Empire" wag W.
H. Kerr'e tome, and after the chorus
"Red, White and Blue" wee followed by
a most appropriate recitation by Georgia
Roes "It's only a piece of old bunting,"
Three rousing cheers were given for the
old flag and the encore for "Canada"
was not wanting in gusto. Sabool
Inspector Robb referred in a jocular
manner to "The nubile Sohool and the
.Empire" and showed that the lessens
learned in ohild1ood are ineffaceable.

phatioally given and Barrietsr Blair took
up the important question "The Tata.
once of the Empire," impressing on ail
the importanoelof personal character id
extending the nation'e influence, in
oolonization and moral uplifting. Mil.
deed Scott waited "Reim the Flag," a
thoroughly patriotic rendition. The
cloeing addreee was by Rev, Jno. Rose,

innings, and had bo leave the field, being
enooeeded by Ted, Grewer in the box.
Umpire Spalding gave good sesiefactioo.
Brussels team is composed almost entire-
ly of juniors. and consequently the defeat-
ing of old base balliote like Wingbam is
all the mora noteworthy. An exhibition
game of 6 innings was played later in the
day between Brussels and the Doherty
Organ Factory team. The game was
not wanting in errors and the Olinton-
ieae won a close matoh by a score of 16
to 14. Fred. Downing made two excel.
lent catches in left field in the first game,
and Reno. Scott eoored a home run.
