He wrote for the press and was editor of the Thespian Mirror when only 18. The musical world has brought forth many infant prodigies. The former Empress Eugenie has gone to the Continent in acoordaooe with her custom and will not return to England for eight months. Much of her lime will be spent on the Riviera and, in travelling on her yacht. Her English home at Farnborough is said to be a moat substantial building of red brick and stone, unpretentious, but most comfortable. Unlike many Eng- lish country places, it in supplied with gas, equipped with a "stoma plant, and supplied with hydrants :for protection in case of fire, It is surrounded by beautifully wooded grounds. This is in reality, Eugenie's home, altlough she spends a large part of every year in travel. She is an early riser In spite of the fact that aloe suffers from in- somnia. Two friends live with her, and her household consists of ten ser- vents. The regular routine of the day is described as monotonously quiet. .Breakfast is an early meal, and is fol- lowed by letter writing and reading the newspapers, which ore attended to by Eugenie's two devoted friends. She sometimes visits the village of Farn- borough in the morning, and regular- ly before luncheon every day a visit is made to the mausoleum on the grounds where the Emperor and the Prince Imperial are buried. The after- noon the Empress usually spends in walking through the grounds. On her visits to London Eugenie is accom- panied always by four servants. Her comfortable and dignified estate of semi royalty is maintained with her own fortune, which is said to be large enough to keep her in luxury and will probably continue to be sufficient for the rest of her life, She gives lib- erally to charities in the neighborhood of her English home. Her entire time is spent in Farnborough, sere for occa- sional visits to London, which are made to attend. to her Dueiuessinterests. She is said not to be sed, in spits of the loneliness of her life.. Among artists, Raphael worked in the studio at 12, at whloh age Titian painted a Madouna. Landseer, the great animal painter, exhibited his pictures at 18, but he had previously given early indications of his genius by drawing animals well before he wits 5 years of age Turner may be quoted as anoth- er example of premature development. Turning to individual instances of youthful preeoetty, it is recorded of a Hanoverian lady named Dorothy Soh- lozer, that she had the degree of doc- tor in philosophy conferred upon her when she was only 17 years of age. Before she was 8 years old, she was taught German, and three years lat- er she had learned french,. Other lan- guages followed in rltpid succession, and before she was 14 she had become au excellent classical sth:uler. In addi- tion she made herself acquainted with every branch of polite literature, as well as many of the sciences. 01 an individual named John Barre - tier it is declared that he was master of five languages at the age of 9 ; wlltle in his 14th year he published a learned letter in Latin and translat- ed the " Travels of Rabbi Benjamin" from Hebrew into French. Four years later the fame of his learning and writings attracted the notice of the professors of the university al Halle, who were so delighted with his wit and knowledge that they offered him the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY. Blaise Pascal, ono of the most pro- found thinkers and accomplished writ- ers of France, is said to have shown precocious proofs of genius, partioular- ly in mathsmatioe, from his early child- hood. At the age of 10 he composed traotate on gonia sections. which ex- oited great admiration, and before be was 26 he had composed the greater part of his mathematical works, and made the brilliant experiments in hy- drostatioe and pneumatics for which he is renowned. At .the present moment, the 4 -year- old son of a butcher is attracting con- skderable attention in Germany by his wonderful gifts. Only recently he was presented to Lhe Anthropological so- ciety .of Berlin as a remarkable exam- ple of early intelligence. His chief de- light is reading, in whiob he showed himself exceptionally proficient at the age of 2 years. He evidently possess- es a retentive memory, for he can re- peat a large number of historical, bio- grnnbis 1 dates, including the dates of 1 the births and deaths of innumerable generals, poets, and philosophers, All this knowledge, it is stated, has been self -acquired, THE WIDOW'S DEVOTION. Marcella Sembrich has a superb col- lection of jewels, which are valued at more than $2CQ,0f0. Then it was diseuv- ered that Mme. Sembrich was stand- ing on her jewel casket. 'There was no other way of securing the customary protection while the trunks were opened, Su she mounted the bux in or- der to pretext it from any potanible danger^. A somewhat similar Incident bappened once in Russia. Mme, Sem- brieb was travelling from St. Feterts- burg to Warsaw, She, her husband and the jewel box were in one emu - Nutmeat, while her maid and the eourien with whom she usually travels wore in another car. The other paaeen- gels in the car wore an Offieer wham they had mot in St. Petersburg and two strange men. After the train left Moscow the officer told Mme. Sembrich that he had recognized the two men as notorious thieves who 110.41 lately been released from prison' and were doubtless on the train for the purpose of getting at her jewels, which were famous in Russia. He promised to keep guard from the outside. Mms, Sembrich and her husband locked the door and alternated in sitting on the jewel cas- ket until Warsaw was Peached in the early morning hours. Then a policeman was brought to the car, and under his supervision, the singer and her jew- els were safely curried to the hotel. lblany of them were giver; to the sing- er by admirer's is Russia. -some of wh to were not even known to her by name. Tbs most valuable part of the collection is a superb set of sapphires, Mr. John Story, of Maryland, Pon- tiac Co., Que., is well known to all the residents of that section, and his cure from an unusually severe attack of rheumatism, by the use of Dr. Wil- liams' Pink Pills, after all other reme- dies had failed; has, if possible, added to the popularity of this favorite medi- cine. Mr. Storey gives the following statement of his suffering and cure. Ha says -"Some ten years ago I was engaged in railroading on the Lake Superior section. of the C.P.R. I was exposed to all kinds of weather, andas a result sustained a severe attack of rheumatism, which all but crippled me, and from which I suffered •muoh agony. I spent more than a hundred dollars an doctors, and fur medicine. but was gradually getting worse :and finally had to Quit work. At this juncture thedoctor told me that be did not think medioinecould cure me, and advised ms to get to some hot springs. 1 took his advice and went to the Harri.stou .Toot Springs, in British Columbia, where I remain- ed. for Dight weeks under the care of the house physician, but experienced no benefit. I then went over to Tacoma, and took a course at the Green !liver Hot Springs, but with no better result. It is now more than a year and a half since I discontinued the use of the pills and during that time I have not had the slightest symptom of the trouble, which regard as the very best evidence that Lhe cure is permanent. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are a speaifia for all diseases arising from an im- poverished ooudition of the blood or a s1,..K4ered o.., Al 1o,, of rte nervous POW persons who have seen the Ger- man Empress would believe that she spends money extravagantly on her 'dresses, yet she is said to keep twelve women constantly employed on her wardrobe, under the supervision of a maid of honor. When she is about to take a journey requiring especial cere- mony this number is increased, to forty, and for every wedding she attends the Empress is said to order fifteen new dresses. In addition to the dresses made in her private establishment, there are court gowns brought from Vienna to ba worn on state occasions. These are so long that the trains nave to be carried to enable the Empress to walk, and are frequently studded with jewels, The value of one dress, includ- ing the jewels applied to the train, is said to have been $20,000. The rule at the German court makes it impossible for the Empress to appear twice at the state. functions in the same costume, and much of the work done by the twelve dressmakers is in making al- terations so that' the rule may not be broken and the dresses have a dif- ferent look though they are really the same. The Empress, when in full dress wears many jew9 els. Some of these are the property of the Crown, and she is entitled to use tbem only so long as her husband remains Emperor. She has no right to wear them as a widow. But she baa some beautiful gems giv- en to her by the Emperor at their marriage, and a beautiful collection of pearls left to her by the late Empress Augusta. The Empress Friederioh is most economical in matters of dress, and so are the majority of women who come tothe German event. A.t the so- called " Schlepps Cour " or " train court," which corresponds to a presen- tation in England, the costumes are not brilliant. The most necessary thing is a train of satin of a certain length. Some of these trains appear to have been in use for years -indeed, until most of the satin bas been worn away, and only the back remains. They are handed -down for years in families, and hitched on to the dresses; of various members ofthe families to qualify them for presentation at this formal court function.
