FOOT BALI.—The following report ie
taken from the Stratford Herald .—The
season of the Western Football Associa-
tion in the senior serine opened ab Wing -
ham on Saturday afternoon, when Strat-
ford went up and met defeat by a score of
four goals to none. The opening was
auspioi0u0in everthing but in the fact
that Stratford was whitewashed. There
was a large crowd, some six hundred
spectators being present, among whom
there were 'about two hundred Indies.
Football certainly eeeme to be popular in
Wingham, and the citizens want wild
over their victory. The Stratford boyo
are quite bolded at the treatment they
received, mod under such conditions, the
whipping was devoid of the sting which
generally goes with a trimming, Thie
being the opening game the Claesio Oity
team was not in the beet of condition.
Four regular players couldn't get away,
and eo their places had to be filled by
spare men. The fact is that oar forward
line never played together until the day
of the match, while the Wingham boys
have been at it almost daily for weeks.
The game went to the home team more
by good look, it is said, than by good
management. The lineup was like this:

Onix. --The following account of the
death and funeral of John G. McPherson,
Principal of Bothwell Publio School and
seoond eon of the old and highly esteemed
Reeve of Turnberry, Wm. McPherson, is
token from the Highgate Monitor of April
27th :—There are very few people in We
Western seotion of a society element who
have nob nen or heard of John G. Me-
Pheroon. He was what you could term a
genial hearted, zealons, kindly disposed
and popular 'moiety friend. He was one
of those who was full of glorious and
noble deeds, full of onorifioes, acts of
noble tenderneae, and human kindness.
He fulfilled his duty as a eubject, a hue -
baud and father. In nature he saw the
teachings of hie Eternal Master in
the spirit of faith, hope and charity in
their fullest meaning. He was born of
the parentage of Wm. McPherson and
Mrs. (McDougall), of Turnberry town•
ship, Ont. After obtaining his education,
chiefly in MaPherson'e school, No. 0,
Turnberry, and at the 0olliugwood Col-

career of teaching about 13 years ago in

He knight on the 4th on., of Harwiob,
South of Blenheim, and while there he
and Miss Bell wore married. He after-
wards taught io Scotland, Morpetb, and
last at Bothwell. About six months ago
his health foiled him, though persistently
oontioned to teach the year out and re-
engaged for the present year, hopeful
that his health would improve, but the
lamp of life flickered from day to day and,
finally went 'tit on Friday, April 21st, at
his home in Bothwell, leaving hie beloved
wife with two little daughters. The
brothers from the verioas lodges to tvilioh

Masotti° body took charge and arranged
for his burial at Blenheim on Monday at
2 p. m. The Foresters, Maocabeee and

noble as over 200 were in attendance and
about equally divided. The remains and
family were at the residence of Mr.

were odndu°ted by Rev, 3. MaLareu, as•

MAY Qunno.—A very enjoyable time
was spent by the pupils at S. S, No. 3,
on Friday afternoon, May 5th, on the
occasion of the crowning of their May
Queen. AL about 2:80 p. m., quite a
large number of the parents and friends
gathered at the aobool and lietened to the
program whiob, although short, was
very well rendered by the pupils, many
of whom were very small. After the
rendering of this part of the program,
the May Queen, Mies Luoy MoKague,
and tho King, Master Andy Mitchell,
accompanied by their eight ladies and
gentlemen of honor and two little flower
girls, marched two by two to the plat.
form and tools their agate. There the
Queen was Drowned by her first maid of
honor, Mies Nettie Bryoe, and the King
was given a large boquet of white lilies
as the sceptre of his power, by the first
gentleman of honor, Master Henry
Thornton. After the rendering of a
number of Arbor and Nay day Bongs and
recitations by the pupils, and the pre,
seating of baguets to the Queen and
King, all marched out on the school lawn,
led by little Mies Ella Wade, dressed in
white and Drowned as the Month of May,
to see the planting of the May Queen
tree. Master Andy Mitobell, although
rather nervone, did his work well, and
after the ohorue by the pupils, "Planting
Our Tree," all Bang 'God Save the
Queen," and the pupils then scattered to
indulge in their various games, until the
lunch, which wee afterwards served on
the'grounde, was ready. The Queen,
Mies Lucy McKegue, and the maids of
honor, Miseee Nettie Be'yoe, May Thorn-
ton, Sarah O'oxton, Inlay MaKague, Edna
Dixon and Nettie Showers all wore white
dreeses .trimmed with flowers. The
gentlemen of honor for the King, Master
Andy Mitobell, were Henry 'Thornton,
Tommy Belly, Leslie Bryce and Earl
Porter. All returned home well pleased
with the pleasant afternoon spent with
the teacher and the pnpila.
