• NOVELTY IN SOFA CUSHIONS
The sofa cushion has become ns muoh
a part of the 110011 wardrobe as the
shirt waist is of lee personal outfit,
and every season new styles of cush-
ions are exhibited, putting lite seal of
disapproval on those we have and
tempting us to replace the worn out
ones with :those on which fashion
smiles.
The newest cushion to -day ie the one
whose cover is made of the fnmons can-
vas work in (rose saline. The beauty
of this cross stitch work Is in its pos-
sibilities of infinite gradations of col-
or; with an intricate design one can
use ten or fifteen shades of Lhe worst-
eds, The pillow is finished with aruf-
flo combining two or three rows of
inch wide ribbon of the shades employ-
ed in the canvas work, stitched to-
gether oT embroidered with herring-
bone or buttonhole.
One beautiful pillow seen at an ex-
hibition recently was of different shades
of blue on a white background, which
was most completely hid, finished by
a ruffle of three shades of blue ribbon;
another of brown, ranging from the
(bark brown, to a (delicate cream, and
finished in the sante style, and still
another of dark violet, shading to helio-
trope.
The canvas work is a pleasant pas-
time. One can do the endless crosses
without paying much attention, and it
is presumed that if it becomes as popu-
lar as it now promises we shall see
the revival of the belt holding coquet-
ries of our grandmothers, and the
young rutin who comes to call will be
asked to hold the 8itein of worsted
while Phyllis coyly entangles it alnun11
his hands and incidentally around his
heart.

"Now there leas at Joppa a certain

ix, 3(L
There is in Joppa, a sea -port town
a woman with her needle embroider-
ing her name ineffaceably into the
ohariti'9s of the world. I see her sit-
ting in the village home. In 111e door-
way and around about the building,
and in the room where she sits, are the
pale faces of the poor. She listens to
their plaint, she pities their woo, she
*lakes garments for them, she adjusts
the manufactured articles to suit the
bent form of this invalid woman, and
to the 0ripple that comes crawlJng on
bis hands and knees.. She .gives a coat
to this ono, see gives scandals to that
one. Wiih the gilts she mingles pray-
ers and tears and Christian encourage-
ment. Then she goes out to 'be
greeted on the street corners by those
whom she has blessed, and all through
the street the cry comes, "Dorcas 15
coining I" The sioklook up gratefully
In her fa0e as she puts her hand on
the burning brute, and the lost and the
abandoned stare up 1131111 hope as they
hear her gentle voice, as though an
(angel had addressed them ; and as she
gates out the lane, eyes half put out
with sin think they see a halo of light
about her brow, and a trail of :glory
in her pathway. That night a half -
paid ehipwrighl climbs 1131 hill and
reaohts home, and sees his little boy
well clad, and says, "Where did these
cloth313 come fro*?" And they tell
bin, "Dances has been here." In un-
oth;r place a woman is trimming It
Lamp; Dorcas brought the oil. In an-
oth'; r place, a family that had not
been at table for many a week are
gathered new, for Dorcas has brought
bread.
But there is a sudden pause in that
woman's ministry. They say, "Where
is Dorcas ? We haven't seen her for
many a day. Where is Dorcas?" Aud
ODD of these poor people goes up and
knocks at the door and finds the mys-
tery solved. All through the haunts
('f wretchedness the news comes "Dolmas
is sick 1" No bulletin flashing from
the palace gale, telling the stages of a
king's disease is nue anxiously awaited
for shun the news from this sick bene-
factress. Alas for Joppa! there is
wailing, wailing. That voice which'
has uttered so many cheerful words is
hushed; that hand which ha11 made so
many garments for the poor is cold
and still ; that, star which had poured
light into the midnight of wretohed-
neess is dimmed by the blinding mists
that go up from the river of death. In
every God -forsaken place In that
town ; wherever there is a sick child
the bluing bottle is empty; Saturday
afternoon: " Please, ma'am, there isn't
any goal," and so on to 1131 end of the
chapter. The kitchen slate, with pen-
cil attached, on which the cook is told
to note clown whatever is wanting, is
the usual resource, but even this fails.
Sometimes the memoranda are really
rubbed out by accident, aud very often
that excuse is macre when something
is forgotten, To avoid this, have asmall
tablet; a pad of writing paper six by
three inches. Bore a holo in the center
of the upper edge and put a string
through to hang it up by. Attach a
short lead pencil, well slmrpened, and
suspend the pad over the kitchen table,

No one has any idea how artistic a

This woman was a representative of
all of those women who make garments
for the destitute, who knit socks for
the barefooted, who prepare bandages
for the lacerated, tette fix up boxes of
clouting for Western missionaries, who
go into the asyluril.4 oe L110 suffering

which is sight for be blind, and hear-

lame man leap like a hart, and brings
the dead to life, immortal health bound-
ing in their pulses. What a contrast
between the practical benevolence of
this woman and a great deaf of the
charity of this day I This woman did
not spend her time, idly planning how
the poor of Joppa, were to be relieved;
she took her needle and relieved them.
She tens nee like those persons who

THINKS THOMIAS-PHOSPHATE BEST
Danvicl Popplewell in " The Cb,lmber
of Agriculture," says: I resin your pa-
per this week with much pleasure. " Re-
sidual Value of Phosphates" is most
interesting. In my opinion both sup-
erphosphnl e and 'l'homns-Phosphate are
valuable manures- Thomas -Phosphate
much the more valuable as producing
food of a much superior quality, and
being a first-rate turnip manure, when
properly used, producing a sound, heal-
thy turnip. On the contrary, super-
phosphate is the great eneournger of
finger and toe, and should never go
into the turnip field; consequently tur-
nips being aprinripal farm crop, Thom-
as -Phosphate is the much superior farm
manure, and, where ,judiciously used,
decidedly 111e most economical and pro-
fitable of all manures at present in
Lite market, As a pasture improving
manure dt has no equal. On some sot!
potash may be required. If Dr. W.
Somerville eradicates cha'Iook without
injury to the grain crop, he will de-
serve the thanks of the country.
