No one cines in 0 community is mde- pendent of he other (fusses. Tint( is not a healthful condition of society in which men stand aloof from each oth- er. That is 0 better state when peo- ple, moving in different circles, al some lime come upon a common plat- form. What is true In the world -is true in the thureh: " lee rich and the poor ougel. to meet together; the Lore is the Maker of them all." 1 do nut think (hat the Chervil of Christ has kepi pace with the enterprise of the world, Some years ago, it look a long time to make a nail, 'l'lhe blacksmith would Lake the bar of iron, thrust it into Lee hot coals, move the bellows, bring the iron out on the anvil, smite It, cleave it, emend it, fashion it into nails, 1t was a lung and tedious pro- cess; but: now the iron is put into the machine, and in n'momenl. hundreds of nails aro showered upon the floor of the manufactory. Once it required some time to thrash wheat from the straw, The farmer would Lake the abed of wheat, tear off the straw that hound it, scatter it on the floor of the barn, and then the stow flail would pound the wheat out of the straw ; now the horses start, the machine rum- bles, and a sheaf of wheat is thresh- ed instantly. in olden times than was considered a wonderful printing -press which could make two- hundred and fifty im- pressions in an hour ; but now, by our modern steam printing -press thou- sands and tens of thousands are made in the same length of time. The Post office was formerly a slow affair. Once in two weeks the mail would go from London to Ldinburgb, and at about the same distance of time go from New York to Boston. Now, I ask if the Church of Goci has kept pace with worldly enterprise? with the pool-olfiee? with modern rag - read transportation? with the arts? with the soleness? with op Lies'1 with geology? with astronomy? "0h," you say, "there is no nes principle in re- ligion to be developed." Well, I re- spond, there is no new principle in science to bre developed. They are only the old prinelples that have come to light and demonstration. There was just as much electricity in the olouds before Benjamin l•tnuklin play- ed kite, with the thunder storms aas there has been since. The law of gravitation did not wane fax Newton to comm. There was just as much power in steam before Fulton discov- ered it as since. The carboniferous and juressic strata of Ino earth did not wait to take their position until Hugh Miller planted his crow -bar. So, in matter's 01' religion, if a man -comes and says, "I have now discovered an .entirely new principle in religion ;" I testy, "1 have no faith in what you are going to say. I have but one standard, and that is the Bible." But if he that I wish to evolve and demonstr- that I ,wish to evolve and demon- strate," then, with all the possible at- tention of my soul, I say, "Hear I been. I" I propose to-nightl Lo argue on behalf of 0 Free Church. There are a great many who do not quite understand the plans and politics of such a church In the first place, I believe in such a church because it seems to me to be the Scriptural idea. The apostle James says; "If there come into your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also 0 poor man in vile raiment;, and ye have respect to him that wearetb the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or set here m footstool; under ootsL of are a not then Y Y (tial inyourselves, and arebecome pa e judges of evil thouhts?" In other words, the apostle James draws a pic- ture. ie-ture. It is et meeting of Christian peo- pte ; the usher stands et the door ; two people come to the door end ask for Beats. The usher looks at the one man, examines him from head to foot, sees that his garments are dictated by the recant feebi,on, and says, "come here, air, 1'11 give you an excellent seat, and says, "1 hope you will be comfortable." Then the usher goes back, sees the other man, sorutinizes Lino very thoroughly, end says, Poor emit, worn shoes, old hat, 1 think yon will find a vary good place to stand in that corner." Now, the lightnings of that pasea.ge strike suoh an usher: in ether words, you have no right Lo ar- range a mast's position in the house of loci according to his financial qualifi- lati.ons. Do you suppose Unit the eahornaolo or olden time, the temple, end. the synagogue, were over rented by worshippers? Oh, no; you tell me those were nura.cuious times. You fay in our times churches are such ex- pensive institutions." We want all this costly machinery. Let me tell you, no church of the day costs half so much us (Ii,d, the old temple, and yet that temple in olden times was sup- eorted, by voluntary contributions. When the farmer brought his harvest he said "These sheaves are for the Lord When the flocks were drawn up, he oiled, These lambs are for God," When the birds were naught, ho staid, "These pigeons and these cloves are for sacrifice." The temple, the tuber- heele, all supported. h,y volunta.ry.cot- tribution. But you Hcy men wore more generous in those times, No, no, the world has been a,dvaneing all the time ; there has neva' been so mach generosity on earth as now. . The Churchhas tried free heaven, out of which u mon 1s scores of Ways. We have gone out with never pitched 'because he can nut pay tratcle and with our llibies and rel(- his pew -rend At the very time a man mora needs the consolation of religion —when his earthly fortunes have fail- ed—at the very tine thee he needs most to be told about treasures that never break—the Church of God turns Its buck upon that man, end the wo•k of breaking down that the Wall gamblers began, the Church of God einishes, It seems as i0 Lhrisl, 1n the infinity of his foreknowledge, could not think of a Church pretending to love hien that would unanimously bar out the destitute. He said, "The poor ye have' always with you," Ho made it not merely as a statement, but as a prophecy and a promise; and yetin does really seem as if, in this respeot, the Lord God Med been thwarted, 'There is another (class of persons to whom it .Free Church will appeal, and that is the middle classes. And lot me they are the suffering ones in reli- gious books, among the people in the destitute parts of the city. Some have refused 10 take them. Some have burned them up. Some have read Them and tried to reform; but as long as we. leave them clown amidst the evil influences by which they are Surround- ed, and do not bring them into some Christian church—if you reform them fifty Limes, fifty times, they will be unreformed. In other words, here to a man clown by the marshes with chills tend fever. The physician eomes and gives hien quinine, and stops the chills; but just as long as that man continues to live dozen by the swamps, he will be subjected to the same ailment. Bring hint out on the hill -top, where the at- mosphere is clear, if you want him to be permanently restored. Now, 1 say of those people who live in the slums of city destitution, as long as you leave them there they will fall into (heir gious things. The wealthy may old sins; but if you bring 4bem into pureh'so religious advantages any - the healthy atmosphere of a Christian where; the positively beggared may ohurch, then you may hope for their feel so (humiliated, they will be will- ing to go into a mission chapel; hue the middle elassee have not money enough to buy positions in the weal- thy churches, and they etre too proud to go among the beggared. So they stay at home. When I say the mid- dle classes, I mean those whose income just about meets lhoir outgoe and you will immediately see that is the con- dition of nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every thousand in this city and in every pity. The foot is, God does not trust, us with money -1 mean the majority of us. Your son is at school, You do not give him a large amount of money at the start. You soy to the teacher, "Send in the bills," When the bills come in, you pay for (the tui- tion, you pay for rluthtug, you pay fur travelling expenses. Now God treats us very much in that way. He °lathes us, pays our travelling expenses, shel- ters us, but never trusts us with a largo amount of money. Hence the middle classes are in the majority — those 1001) in a community are in the majority telco, avhen they have met the butcher's bill, and the grocer's bill, and the gas 0il1, and the clothing bill, and paid the house -rent, have nothing left. The wife treys to her husband, "My deur„ 1 thin!: we ought to go to church somewhere. "Why don't we take a pew it Dr. Well -to-do's church!" "Oh," he, says, "we cant afford' it. I hive more now to pay than I canpay. We can't go there. We've got to deny ourselves a little' longer. We'll get -a little religion perhaps at home, We'll occasionally read the Bible, and once in a while Igo to a funeral, and that won't cost no any •.hing; and we will pick up a little religion here and there; and after a while we may have good luck, and we will then rent a pew, and go Lo heaven respectably." Many a hue- band end wife have considered with each other upon matters of church economy and before taking n paw, the husband said to the wife, "Now, you know that our income 'only meets our outgo. What are you willing to deny your- self? Will you have this old carpet another year? twill you wear that set of; furs another winter? Will you consent to enive n0 more dresses this 9e15on? "No," she says. "Then,' he says, "we, can't afford religion, and we cunt afford the church," And so they stay at home. My friends, open the doors of a 'tree church, where men may meet together without invidious comparisons, and they will pour in like the (tides of the sea, We hev0 been bnrriug out this class of men from h t the use of Gott, d and barring them out from the very gate of heaven. The feet is, that tee Church has become a sort of spiritual insurance company; and the man comes to get a policy, and you take him into a private room and sound the lungs, and listen to the beating of the heart, and then, practically—not literally, but ipett0LLcaliy—you ask him if he is sound un the dollar question, and if he has been afflicted with anything like bank- ruptcy, and if there has been anything like financial sickness in the family— and, if it is all right you ehurge hen a great premium, and dell him to be very careful and pay it promptly, for if the policy should run out, than very night he might die, and so lose all the advan- tages of all the pow -rent he had even.• paid; and where his soul Would go to would be very uncertain. Thera is another class of people to whom a Free Church will appeal, and thea is the rich. I have yet to finch an intelligent and rich Christian men who does not believe in such institution. He may doubt the financial success of it; but I ban yet to find one such who does not believe in Ihe principal of it. In other words, our moneyed men do not like to sea the principles of. Well Street applied to the church of God, When I say it rich mall, 1 mean a man W110 has etches -.not a men who has gained a little money and who is very anxious lest he can not sufficiently display it but I melee a 0)1111 who has a fortune, who masters it, and wile has tot al- lowed bps fortune to master him. When • you Bhall elbow open the churches of the living God as free °hareems, then I want to tell you that the gold and the silver, end the myrrh, end the frankincense will come down to Lhe feet of Jesus. i am in favor 01 a Free Church, fur- ther, b00a1t50 all the Providential in- dioa:liens, so fat as we ere contemned, are in that direction. It has been the ell -Absorbing principle in my sottl ever since t onlored the ministry, ;it was permanent. reformation. If you can say to them, "There is a free church, there is a free Bible, there is a free cross, and yonder is a free llenvon," they will readily accept the invitation andcome with you. Aikens' duties are onerous and heavy throughout the year, and a man who was not possessed of more than ordinary shrewdness and capability could not possibly fill his position. This being the ease, it will be read- ily understood that Mr. Aikens was very heavily handicapped when, some three years ago, he was attacked by Bright's Disease—a disease which many physicians claim is incurable. 'Mr. Aikens found a sure, however. And so important does he rightly deem his recovery, than he hies given the following statement regarding it, for publication, in the hope that other suf- ferers from Bright's Disease will be resoued. "I could gat no relief, no matter what I used, mar which of our doctors treated me. I had suffered, with (Bright's Disease, for two years, and had tried many remedies and wasted many dollars in my endeavors to re- gain my health.
