AVERTED AN ACCIDENT. — On Saturday morning, 14th inst., Misses Mabel Steven- son and Effie Hamilton were walking down the track, when they disoovered a horse floundering in a culvert, the result of the oaimless driving of a, drunken man sometime during the previous night, who was subsequently found on the roadside a short distance away. The early train from Kincardine was due, and the girls showed their presence of mind by running up the track and Dolling •Norman Nichol in a neighboring field, who waved his hat and thus succeeded in arresting the at- tention of the engineer of the approaching train, who slowed up just in time to avert what doubtless would have proven a terrible accident, as the horse wag so situated in the culvert as to derail the train. The trainmen assisted the horse out of its awkward position, and strange to add the animal appeared little the woad of its novel experience. The trainmen found the driver a short dis- tance away, where ho had lain in a drunken stupor all night, The girls were taken abroad and the train proceeded on its way5 to At wood. The oflioials of the train ere naturally grateful to the ladies. We commend the good sense and presence of mind in the part they acted in the affair, for veryrnauy girls, we fear, would have thrown up their hands in astonishment and fright and passed on without taking the trouble to enquire in- to possible consequences.
