to jump over the fence but got stuck half
way over. While endeavoring to get the
animal off, it plunged and pulled the
fence over crushing Mr. Beattie beneath
it. Ho was severely bruised but other-
wise escaped injury.
August Sperling, of Sea£orth, who Was
arrested in Buffalo on Wednesday of last
weak, charged twit., being connected with
an alleged arson case, and whowas
brought back to St&forth, had a prelimin-
ary examination on Friday, resulting in
his being sent to Goderioh for trial.

over $1500 having been raised for current

Ata speoial meeting of the Town
Council it was decided to have a new
boiler pct on the steam fire engine, the
old one, which had done service for 22
years, having given out. The engine has
been shipped to Brantford for the 0eces-
eery repairs and another angina hag been
sent here in the meantime. The new
boiler will entail an expense of $640, and
the freight on both engines will be $60
more, so that the town will be charged
$700.
W. A. Purcell died at his home on the
9th inst., after an illness of six weeks.
From the first his illness was oritioal,
and although he rallied somewhat at
intervals, making a gallant struggle for
life, it was felt that hie ebenoes for re-
covery were extremely doubtful. His
death was due to peritonitis. The de•
ceased was in hie 29rd year, and was the
third son of Joseph J. Purnell. Having
been horn and brought np in Listowel
and being for the plat 8 years employed
in Thompson Bros'. store, he was well
known throughout the community. He
wax married and leaves a wife and two
small children.
On Wednesday night of het week the
safe in the office of Gillies & Martin's
fonndry was blown open by burglars who
no doubt expected to make a haul, but
were doomed to lieappointment, as they
found the safe empty. The burglars got
into the office by prying up the window,
and evidently had a full kit of berglar'e
tools with them, ae the door of the safe
WW1 181110d through, and pieces or the
fuse which they used to ignite the powder
were left behind. The safe was badly
wrecked, yet no one in the neighborhood
had heard the expleeiou. That they wore
etranger0, and probably professionals in
the business, Is Apparent from the foot

or two of brandy and a box of cigars.

Wycott drew a revolver and fired. The
first shot grazed Carson's head, the sec-
ond passed through his clothes and the
third shot took effect in the fleshy part of
his hip, where the bullet remains imbed.

and has been prominent in hearten and
political circles for seine years, Adolbert

estate out of hls management. Mr. Car-
son, as a friend, has been trying to effect
a settlement, and it is supposed the con-
versation between Wyoott end Carson,
prior to the shooting, was regarding the
estate. It is thought Wycott'e mind is
unsettled, caged by worry, Wednesday
evening—Adelbert Wyootb, who shot Mr.
Carson thio morning, has just died from
a dose of carbolic acid. Two constables
went with a warrant for his arrest this
afternoon, but were afraid to approach
him. About 5 o'clock he took carbolic
acid, which ho must have had in readi-
ness, and died in a few minutes. 1Nr.
Carson, the victim of the shooting, is the
only brother of J. E. Carson, dry goods
merchant of this town.
At the Central prison they are build-
ing a water tank to have a oapscity of
900,000 gallons, It will be batik, and the
roof will be two feet beneath the level of
the lawn. This pleoo will be filled in and
sodded, and the tank will be invisible. A
pump will be used to throw the water fn
case of lire.
