A JUST ORJNOTION,—No merobant in
Brussels nor in any other town welcomes
the periodical visits of the Weights and
lt'leasurss Inspector. They have no fear
of his finding their scalae dishonest, but
they have a eerloue objection to his fees,
which they think are unjustly imposed
upon them, instead of upon the country
at large. The Ottawa Citizen in speaking
upon the subject gays : "The retail mar -
anent has good Gauge for objeoting to the
payment of $2 for every inspection of bis
weigh scales by the Inepeator of weights
and measures. The inspection is naoes-
sary in the public interest, and the pub -
lie ought to pay for the same ie full.
No good reason oan be given why a mer-
ohent whose melee are correct ought to
be assessed that the pnblio may be assur-
ed of that foot. Ile does hie fall duty

which was an excellent one. tibief D.

Jean,' W. 1I, Sinclair and 3, H. Camer-
on ; instrumental selection by Prof.
Hawkins, The letter gentleman also
performed the duties of a000mpaniet in
his usual proficient minter. Every per.
son taking part did exceptionally well.
Mise Stewart was well deserving of the
encore sbe received and the Scroteh duet
alga evoked ereoall. There were'atmany
in the Hail who could "spoke the Gaelic"
but the realistic manner in wbieh Chief
Stewart addressed the gleaming wormed
was accepted as evidence sufficiently
strong to satisfy the audience that what
he was saying was all right. Mr. Rose'
subjeot was dealt with under three
heads :—(1) Burns as a Peasant ; (2)
Burns en a Patriot ; (3) Barns as a Poet.
It was an exceptionally well prepared
address and deserved, as it would have
had under favorable ciroumstanoes, a
crowded house. The National Anthem
brought the program to a oonolusion.

day night of past week, The porformanoe
was one of particular merit and showed
careful preparation as well as real his-
trionio ability, The part of the oldoll
virago, Mrs. Rer's, was strongly taken
by Miss Lottie Mante
oKenzie, whose ar.
notarization of the part was a finished
performance, the equal of which has sel-
dom been seen on a Winghem stage.
The part of her down -trodden old hus-
band was looked after in a creditable
manner by W. T. Sullivan, whose quaint
nations and sayinge kept the audience in
a continual state of merriment, The part
of the heroine, Esmeralda, was wall done
by Mise &tangent Vanetone, whose peon•
liar 00310 of heathy is particularly suited
to the pert ate essayed, The part of her
rough but gentle lover was taken by John
Bell, but it was probably in his dual role
of rho Marquis that Mr. Holl showed to
beet advantage, Mies Nellie Macdonald
performed the pert of Nora with a dash
and vigor that was refreshing, her bright
