selection by Sir Oliver Mowat when
Premier of the Govorument, to which he
is now Her Majesty's represenative, of a
practical farmer as the responsible head
of a department having to do with the
greatest industry in the country.
Under authority conferred by the Leg-
islature the Minister of Agriculture al.
ready has inspectors at work fn the
nurseries and adulate of the districts
where the Soule leas got a start and it is
being thoroughly stamped out.
How serious a matter dealing with this
dangerous microscopical post is may be
understood when it is learned that not
only all kinds of fruit trees, shrub$ and
bushes aro snbjeat to destruction by the
Scale, but all hard wood growth in our
forests as well may be ruined.
The enormous loss suffered in the 17
States of the neighboring Republic, where
the Scale is ravaging, is but a measure of
what this Province will escape by the
Government's admirable action.
Quite appropriate in this connection is
the following extract from an interview
with Albert Ray, proprietor of the Pros-
pect 11111 fruit farm, near St.
Catharines, Ontario, in the Buffalo Ex.
prose of Jan. Silt ins1.
"My politics are opposed to the Govern-
ment of Ontario," said Mr. Ray, "butt I
must say that in Mr.. Dryden the present
administration has a most competent
man. When he (asked me to come to
Toronto t0 look over his bill, I and those
with me, expected to find that we were
necessary to the perfection of that bill.
But we were not. The bill had been
drafted and was submitted to us for our
approval. We found the ground fully
covered and instead of teaching the
Minister how to preserve the fruit, we
found ourselves listening to Mr. Dryden's
plans. It would be impossible to find a
more capable Minister of Agriculture in
the Province. Wo were delighted with
]rim."
"It is the Governmenb's intention,"
continued Mr. Ray, "to destroy, or cause
to be destroyed, every fruit tree that is
known to be infected with the San Jose
Sable. It is believed that the pest was
brought into Canada from United States
nurseries, and it has become so fatal to
the fruit trees that extreme mea0nres are
necessary. The bill provides for Gorman.
seinen to anamouut whioh will suable the
grower to replace the trees without ex.
pence to himself, and the penalty for no-
gleoting to destroy infected trees is snob
as to induce ovary owner of an orchard to
see that tho late is needed out. Wiles
the infected trees are destroyed we can
then start over again under a new law
providing for the rigid inspection of all
imported nursery stook and the exclusion
of trees affected by the Seale."

Isaiah, 43331 ohap10r and let verse, "I
have called thea by thy name, thou art
Mine," was Rev. Mr. Allen's text last
Sabbath morning. (1) The Name ; (2)
The Call ; (3) The Claim. Romans 14
and 21, and 1st Oor. 14 and 18 were the
foundation for a sermon on "Is it Right
to Dance or Play Cards 7" at the. evening
service. The speaker said the answering
of a query like this should not depend on
personal opinion, nor merely the opinion
of the ohuroh, but a ]higher authority
must determine. The Bible is the high.
est Court. We must judge of the righb
or wrong of many things by the results.
The dance and card table, like many
other mo e n amusements, E d r menta have become
se
an institution and must be considered
from that standpoint. As pastor he
gave his testimony oovering a period oC
about 25 years, and this was followed by
the verdict pronounced by the Methodist,
Presbyterian, Anglican and Roman
Catholic) ohurobes, which was in no case
favorable, the general opinion being that
it oonduoed to lets hours, squandering of
time and a dwarfing of religious life, if
nothing worse. The well-being of others
should be the serious ooneideration of
every Christian. Mr. Allen's sermon
was moderate in its tone, yet decisive
and decided enough to make many people
think seriously on the subject.
