SCOTT NABBED HIM. --From the Sarnia paper we observe that D. M. Scott, who recently went to that town from Brussels, has been engaged at private dee teotive work and the other night arrested a plan Darned Peteroon for defacing the fence of J. F. Lister, Barrister, by pour- ing blank crude oil on it. It is quite a sensational affair as Mr. Peterson is re• puted to be one of the wealthiest citizens of Sarnia. Here is Scott's evidence at the trial regarding the arrest :-Donald M. Scott, a private detective who has been ander pay of the town fur the past ten days, who was engaged watching Mr. Lieter's fenoo for three or four nights past, was then called. On being sworn he said : About ten minutes past eight o'clock last night I went up to Mr. Lis- ter's premises, I was only there a few minutes wben officer Sarvis came along. A few minutes later I smelt crude oil. I rose np from where I was lying and saw 14fr, Peterson standing in front of me throwing oil on the fence. I did not say anything at the time brit stepped out from under the trees. I saw hien as plain as I see him now, He was not two fest from me, I wellted down to the gate, following bim right along. As soot as I got out of the gate I arrested him. He did not say anything for a few minutes. I said : "You're the man I'm looking for ; come along with me," He did not reply for a few minutes and then he said, "What do yon want of me 9" I replied "I want to report you at the police station for damaging Mr, Lister's fence with crude oil." He said "I didn't do it." While be was thus talking he wee trying 631 sneak the bottle out of his pocket. I might say I saw him .shove the bottle in. to his pocket while I was following him along on the inside of the fence. I saw the oil renting out of the bottle on the fence. After he . gat the bottle out he tried to pitch it over a fence in front of Mrs. illoKenzie's plane. I reaobed be- hind him and caught his arm. I said, "You might just as well bring that along with you." Re said "What 9" and I said "this bottle." He denied having any bottle and he pot it baott into his pocket. I said "Never mind ; whatever it is bring it along," Then Mr. Petereon took the bottle eat of his p00ket again, I thiuk his object was to drain all the oil out of it, I did not think of it at the time. I only kept track that he diel not throw the bottle away, I brought him to the police station and handed him over to 011100r Sarvis to look him up, which he diel. When I brought him in he took the bet - tie out of hie po0ket, (this bottle in court ie the one), and he said to Sarvis, "Bar - vie this man arrested me with We bottle and blames me for putting oil on Lister's Penns, but I never did." He Was then put in a Dell. He made all kinds of excuses to try and prevent befog locked in a Dell and wanted to be looked in the pollee court room. He asked Sarvis if he would let him out if there was no oil on the fence, and everything was fonnd all right. Sarvis told him he would conoid. 00 the matter. Then Sarvis and I Wellt up to Mr, Lister's place and found the oil on the fence as I have described. The oil was running down the piakete when we got there. To Mr. Hanna from Brussels, Huron County. Don't know whether Paterson (one round the corner or not. I smelt ail before he got to me, When I raised np Peterson wee patting oil on the fence ae I have elated. No one saw me arrest Peterson. People were on the apposite aide of tine street. The light ie sufficient to see very plain at this plane. I aerated Peterson between the two small Setae in front of Mr, Lister's Slase.
