(Modeled upon an approved pattern,) It stands in the oorner, alone and forlorn, The old parlor sofa so threadbare and worn. The chintz that bedecks it might cause the mathete To shudder and flee with a yell to the street, For there are arranged, on a background of green, Enormous ahrysantbelnums ultramarine, But ever by me atoll be fondly adored The old parlor sofa when grandfather snared. You may jeer, you may sneer, you may gibe at it, too, But sit not upon it whatever you do, For all who abruptly sit clown on its seat Repent it with language I dare not re. peat. Its springs may be bruken, uncertain its legs, But mourning affection affectingly begs A tribute of tears, each as grief may afford, For the old parlor sofa where grandfather snored. How often, recumbent, he lingered there long, (His lege being weak, though bis language was strong,) Aye, oall me unmanly and weak if you will I I oling to the sofa devotedly still, And many a jugfal of tears have I shed On the antimacassar that covers its bead. "He that flndeth hie life shall lose ft," was the minister's text that day, And Fleenor seamed to listen, though her thoughts were far away ; In a week it would bo a variation, and she longed for the time to three That would take her away from the city to her beautiful seaside home. IFlearor's heart beat faster, her face wore a troubled look As her hand closed softly over her little pookeb•hoolt, Where she carried a birthday present, a bright new piece of gold, And tate look of trouble deepened while her hand took a firmer hold. "I0011'1 give this," elm was thinking, "though it's all I have to give, And I wish the ohildren all meld go to a pleasant place to live." ODD FELLOWS' GRAND LODGE. Belleville, Aug. 11.—The Rebekah As. sembly held a session last night and another this morning which just about concluded their work. This evening the officers were installed and Aberdeen Lodge, of Deseronto, exemplified the Re. bekah Degree. The I. 0. 0. F. Grand Lodge repro. sentatives and the local brethren, headed by canton of Belleville and the I. 0. 0. F. silver bend, paraded the principal streets to the Opera House, where the Grand Lodge proceedings were held, Mayor J. A. Johnston, on behalf of the city, and W. 13. Northrup, M. A., on behalf of the local lodges, presented addresses to the grand lodge, to which suitable replies were made by Grand Master White. BRAND MASTER'S REMIT. Grand Master Henry White delivered his annual report, complimenting the order upon the success of the year's work, and recounting the iuoidonts at. tending his official visite. "Although. the year jest closed has not been in any sense a record year," 81r. White said, "71 le with a sense of psouliar eatisfao. tion that I am able to report a oontinued advanos in our numbers and usefulness. "Financially this great organization has made distinct and satisfactory pro groes. AGED ODD O'OLLOwa. "Legislation of the Sovereign Grand Lodge enabling Grand Jurisdictions in their clisaretion to create, maintain and dispense an aged Odd Fellows' fund wag instituted at the last 058510n 01 that body. Where a member is over 60 years of age and has been affiliated with nue, institu- tion for 26 years or over and hie lodge has for any reason surrendered its ohm - ter, he is surely entitled to the benefit of his membership in some way or other. LODGE PIISSI0.IANS. "By the action of the Sovereign Grand Lodge at its last melon it lima been do- elarod contrary to the law of the Order for subordinate lodges to pay out of their funds to a pbysioian hired by the year, unless authorized by the constitutions laid down by Grand Lodges foe their sub. ordinates. This decision affeobing, as it does, a very large number of lodges in our jnrisdiotion, is very far•eeeing and serious THE BRUSSELS POST in its possible effects on onr membership. It is very difficult to say what might IX) the ultimate elloot of abolishing these oflicoro, and itis for this Grand Lodge to take such action ee they :nay be advised in the promisee. I would strongly re. commend, in view 0f our present position, that an amendment to leo oonstitution of our subordinates be ietroduesd, giving the neoeseary powers for the appointment of lodge phyeiciane ; and I so reaonlmend despite the doubts that have been ex. pressed as to ourpnwere in this retard," TITS ORDER'S 100001)58, Grand Secretary J. B. King, in hie ae. noel report, called attention to the Or- der's advance io membership of 12,172. Daring the previous year 1,015 situ brothers received 912,082.40, the total re- lief of aIle Seo be( - „ l,1 0 .1 w:.1 total funds 9240,734.70. Today our roster has 22,825 members, During 1890 3,118 members wore aiok, receiving 240,000.00 —total relief 982, 480.76, and total funds 9025,773,01: a truly noble record of advance for such a short period. It should till the heart of every Odd Fellow in Ontario with pride and satisfaction and confirm and biomes, if it need be, his faith in the future of the Order. "Tho large and increasing rate of sick- ness and death in the older lodges warns every thinking member that the amount of benefits of all ]finds has too long been made more largely oat of a generous Sym. path), than from the fact of the ability of the lodge to meet and ootttieue to meet these growing demands. While the ob- ject in joining our Order may not and should not be for what benefits one may get from it, at the satnetime the benefits to be derived from membership in the Order form a very important factor in deciding the average man to join it. Therefore there should be no doubt as to the soundness and solvency of the bene- ficial 5ys1em, so that confidence may not be felt by every member, that as others have received their benefits hie will be forthcoming when required. "A number of our older lodges have lately experienced the foot that they can- not om" it,u4 t., p y .lu l:r,r;;a .I1n1 they y have boon paying on the death of a meld• bar, and have every assurance that their funds will hold oat till the last obligation is met—and there is no doubt but to a greater extent than ie generally known this doubtless is the amuse of many'of the suspensions for nos -payment of dues. "The payment on the deasase of a brother of any sum, unless the lodge ool- Ieet5 the proper cost for such insurance, should, and really must, be disoontinued if disaster is to be averted. "In view of all this it appears evident that now is the time to make a obange. There should be absolute uniformity as to fees and dues paid into sash lodge, and io the amount of benefits to be paid by each lodge for eiok or funeral benefits. The many, we are tangbt, are stronger than the fete, so, therefore, all lodges joining bands contra with positive safety, promido to pay contiguous sick benefits, and not be oompelled when a brother has loot his health and become a confirmed invalid to reduce his benefits to the pit. mance of ena defier p. wnnit, That mount is truly better than none, end more par. titularly when with it is carried the sym- pathy or hie brethren, but a more sub. Stan Hal sum alight and can as well as not bo provided far. "If, •ho it ;y ns+d, the seworehln Lo'l,rs laws will not permit the adoption by a provivaial jurisdiction of laws to enable lodges to do as here suggested, then it is high time tbat that body should better commit its own and the order's interests by making legislation by which it can bo done." The report of the Grand Treasurer showed the fineness of the Grand Lodge to be in a satisfactory condition, All the reports, including the auditor's, were referred to committees. The special committees seleoted to look into matters of au Odd Fellows' home and matters relating to financial affairs presented abort reports. 00001MITTEES arr0INT50.
