wrecked almost beyond repair. Ono of
these had an organ from the Goderich

Tho organ went into fragments, but the

CONVICT CIC.AIG'S UNHAPPY LOT IS
CENTRAL TItuSON,
Toronto, July 29. Thomas Craig, a
oonvi01 at the Central prison, is in soli-
tary confinement nursing a bullet which
was fired into his oelI by Guard Charles
Edward, and which he says he intends to
show the Minister of Justice ou his re-
lease. The bullet is nob in any part of
Craig's anatomy, bat this he soya is not
the fault of Guard Edward. He pinked it
up from the floor after the inoident od-
carred.
Craig has served time at Kingston and
was twioe sentenced to short terms for
theft in the Toronto police courts. He is
now serving a sentence received at
Goderioli, bis home,
The convict is 24 years of age, and is a
tailor by trade. He was put to work in
that shop when he arrived 1n t110 prison.
He was a very morose and rebellions
prisoner, and set such a ball example to
the other convicts that Poremau
Able asked the warden to have him re-
moved, and Craig was e000rdingly detail-
ed to the broom shop. He refused flatly
to go after due persuasion, but finally
went for one day. When the work was
over Craig left bis place in the line, and,
walking to where Mr. Able was standing,
remarked : "I'11 out your heart out be-
fore six mouths have passed."
He was then taken back to his oell and
searched. Two knives were found on
him, one with an ugly slender blade near-
ly four inches long and sharp as a razor,
Then Craig was disciplined by spanking,
the punishment given prisoners for grave
violations of the prison law. He reoeiv.
all ten slaps and went back to his oell
lead with rage, vowing that if he were
hanged for it he would out Warden 011-

ed the guards to be ready to protect
themselves in the eveut of being attacked
by the convict, but lint to draw a weapon

Craig,upi»lcoming back to hie Dell
after the spanking, smashed a bottle of
medicine against the door grating and
Rogers entered Craig's cell, when the
convict made a dash at them with a
piece of wood in his hand. Thinking
that another weapon might be behind
the wood, Edward drew his revolver and
