THE CHRISTIAN HIGH WAY.
This way is made on truth divine
And glory all along it shines,.
'Tis high and holy, jest and right,
And all who walk there walk in light.
It is the only way to God,
Scoured by Christ's most precious blood,
"I am the way, the truth, the life,"
Believe and enter into life.
This is the way which leads to God,
,The way the holy prophets trod ;
Ad all who freely give np sin
May enter on, and walk therein,
This is the way to life above,
Where all is peace and jay and love ;
And where the soul of good possess'd
Shall go and find eternal reef.
This is the way the martyrs trod,
And all who ever name to God ;
And still the door ie open wide
And none who oome will be denied.
This is the way to pardon free
For guilty sinners such as me ;
While p8008 is there tbb most profound,
And joy is ever to be found.
This way is high and holy too,
And free to all—Gentile and Jew,
Who in the name of Christ believe
And to the Lord for mercy cleave.
This is the way—the higher plane,
Where love and peace for ever reign,
Where God invites the holy Beed
And all will go who feel their need.
This is the way that leads above,
And where is found eternal love ;
Where God is worshipped by the throng
And all the ransomed swell the song.
And all along the age to oome
They'll sing Hie praise—the great
Three -One,
And higher 01111 the notes will swell
That Jesus bath done all things well.

GRANDPA AND BESS.
Two bright beads in the oorner,
Deep in the easy chair ;
One with a orown of yellow gold,
And one like the silver fair ;
One with the morning's rosy lush,
dad one with the twilightie tender
hush. '
"Where do the New Years oome from 2"
Asks Goldlocks in her glee ;
. "Do they sail in a pearly shallop
Aorose a wonderful sea --
A sea whose waters have rainbows
spanned,
Touch alt the borders of fairy -land ?
"Do all the birds in that noantry
Keep singing by night and by day,
Singing among the blossoms
That nover wither away 2
Will they let you feel, as you hold them
near,
Their warm hearts beating, but not
with fear ?
"And the happy little children,
Do they wander as they will,
To gather the sweet wild roses,
And the strawberries on the hill—
White wings, like bntberiliee all afloat,
And a purple cloud for a fairy boat 7
"There sure is snail a oohntry

Though I never, never could find it,
Awake in the morning light ;

Where the beautiful Now Years wait

"Where do the New Tema come :from 2"
Saye Grandpa, looking away,
Through the frosty rite on the window,
To the distant hills so gray ;
They Dome from the ooantry of Youth,
I know,
And they puss to the land of Long•Ago.
"And which is the fairest country 2"
Dear heart, I never can tell
Where the New Yeare wait theirdawning,
Or the beautiful old years dwell ;
But the sweetest Summers that ever

"The New Years wait for you, darling,
And the Old Years well for me
They have carried my clearest treasures
To that oountry over the sea—
The eyes that were brighbeet, the lip that
sung
The gladest parols when life wns young.
But I know of a better country,
Where the Old Years are all new ;
I shall see its shining pathway
Sooner, sweetheart, than you ;
And I'll send you a message of love and
obeer
With every dawn of a glad New Tear,"
The eyes of the clear old pilgrim
Are looking across the scows ;
While closer nestles the merry fade,
With its flush like a piok wild rose •,
Dreaming together, the young and ,old—
Looks of silver and orown of gold.
AN EVENING WITH SCOTLAND.
Mise Mary Rose tells in poetry bow an
evening was spent in connection with
raising funds for their Experience Social
as follows
Mrs. Tufts and Mrs, Stewart, Joie. Ross
and I,
Formed a sorb of combine with the motto
"Do or die,"
We chatted over many a scheme, among
them was a laundry,
But we thought it too bard work, so we
still were in a quandry.
The world is sympathetic, the statement
none can doubt,
So we thought in encu a trouble, we'd ask
our friends to help us out ;
If talking wore effective, we did enough,
it's plain,
To move a mountain off its bate and
100os it on again.
We thought we'd give a sonial and have
everything real Scotch,
But, Oh I I tell you we were scared that
it would he a botch ;
It took ns nearly alt one clay to issue in-
vitations,
And when the time came we were glad to
see our friends and near relations.
To those who helped to entertain we gave
a Scottish bonnet,
And to everyone a thistle with the pro•
grain stamped upon it ;
Katie sang a solo, the name was "Jeseie's
dream,"
And the "Anld Scotch snags" by Sandy
made all the faces beam.
Wm. and his worthy spouse then sang
"My Pretty Page,"
And "Larboard Watch" was well receiv-
ed, notwithstanding its old age ;
Mrs. Sarney kindly favored ns with
"Lomotds Bonny Banka,"
While Donald, with his violin, helped to
fill the ranks.
Geo. Thomson rendered very well "The
Rose of Allendale,"
While Cameron and Allister still have
theirs for sale ;
"Scotland Forever" was the song that
Annie sang,
And was so patriotio you could almost
hear the slang.
Our worthy pastor gave a speech, "Soot.
tieh Proverbs" was his theme,
But none of us were Scotch enough to
really take it in ;
"Who's a' wi' ye" seemed to be hie favor-
ite spearin,
And some folk looked as if they'd really
lost their bearin'.
Frederick gave a reading which was so
very funny
That every one would surely feel they
got value for their money ;
And last of all but not the least, we men-
tion the Professor,
Who of a generous, willing way, is always
the possessor.
Lunch was dealt with lavish band and to
their greateurpriee
We gave them scones and -oat meal cakes
which opened many eyes ;
In this respect, at least, we think we've
won their hearts,
For now no cue clan ever double our col.
inary arts.
And now before we close we'll appease
your curiosity
By telling you the sum the raised by the
people's generosity;
After paying our expenses andcounting
up the pence,
We find we have the total gain of ten
dollars and forty mints.
WISE RULES.
A profitable example has been afforded
by President Edwards, whose 'Good res-
olutions' we may all of us lay to heart.
'For the future direotion of my life I re.
solve,' he says
'That I will make religion my chief
concernment.' •
'That I will never be afraid or ashamed
to speak in defenon of religion.'
'That I will matte it my daily practice

will of God, and be quickened and Dom.
forted, and qualified to serve °lariat, and

the world.'

ret.'

Hector Mckinnon, a former resident
of Goderioh, brother of Mrs, R. R. Sal.
lows, of this towu, was killed in a run-
away accident in Northern iltiaingsn on
Deo. 23rd. He was driving a spirited
team which in some way got from control,
and deoensed was thrown out of the
vebiole, and against a stump, which
caused sudden death. McKinnon was
a quiet, hard-working man of about 33
years of age, unmarried, and will be re-
membered by the older residents of the
town. His relatives have the sympathy
of the community. The remains wore
brought bo Goderioh and were interred in
Maitland cemetery in the afternoon of
the same day.
"Old, yet ever new, and simple and
beautiful ever," sings the poet, in words
whioh might well apply to Ayer's Sarsa-
parilla—the most effioienb and scientific
blood•purifier ever offered to suffering
humanity. Nothing but superior merit
keeps it so long et the front.
