reeding dairy Cows for
Froduptiatrr
•FON9rIob or l DAME eelr,
It ie eoeroely cot:emery to stay that the
prodaotion of milk is the greateebhum,
tion of the dairy 007. The eoonemioal
pprodsctlon of large gaantitiee of mills,
butter er cheese, determines the 'alae et
the now, and the beat efforts of breeders
of dairy stook ehonid alwaye be directed
towarde tbie goal. If the dairy Pow d see
not yield a profitable flow of milk, eke
eea9ee. to have any reason for ex:ate:me,
Beefing qualities are of eemparatively
importanoe, except in oaeee when a goad
pow loses the use of a portion of her
udder, or in home way betlomee undo,
hirable lie a milker,
Panay POINTS. --
It naturally tollowe that to enure the
beet prodded requite, little attention
should be paid to what are commonly
epoken of as tangy pinto. It in only ie
very exoeptionai oases that oolor of the
hair, size and amateur of the horns, 1lrace-
tql uarriage, and ooniaal teat°, can make
any possible dif3'erenoe in the aortia(
,eine of a clow,. yet .these and many other
equally useless tangy pointe are held in
high eeteem by many breedere and
judge. Beauty of form and breed type
are klwaya desirable, and breedere may
well endeavor to combine these in as great
a degree ae poeeible with capacity at the
pail, bat the latter must ever remain the
&rat consideration.
POINTS INDIOATnia P0ODUOTION,
The first great 'essential point to he
sought in the dairy cow is constitution,
without whiob ehe cannot stand the
strain of many years' heavy feeding and
milking. The wide cheat, good heart -
girth, and general appearance of vigor
are the obiet indioatiooe of constitution.
Other points largely indioative of pro.
duction are :—a wide strong muzzle ; a
comparatively open backbone or ohine,
indicating a tendency to make milk
rather than fat r a capacious barrel, asp.
able of making one of large qaantitiee of
feed, and a roomy, well•eheped udder,
with large mammary veins and milk -wells.
A well.known Canadian breeder hue
tersely summarized these qualifications
in the words, a big month, a big belly,
and a big bag.
TESTED ANCESTOR,.
Experienced men are able to seleot
good cows with a reasonable amount of
certainty, bat the most expert dairy
judge ie largely at sea when he attempts
to select a good ball by appearances alone.
When we Dome to the question of raising
good oowe, we find that the only road to
semen is in breeding from oowe of known
eapaoity and from bulla whose female
anaeatera have also been tested for merit
at the pail and churn. It ie almost im•
perative that a good bull eboeldbe banked
by a 000eiderable number of good pro.
duoing dams and grand -dame, if earls.
factory results are to be expeoted from.
hie daughters.
ADVANCED REaIeTRY.
About twenty years ago some of the
prominent American breedere of Holetein-
Friesian cattle, impressed with the im-
poi times of the above question, started
what ie known as an "advanced registry,"
in which oowe could be recorded only
after making a milk o
r butter record
greater than a certain high standard.
This eyetem of registry wee greatly im.
proved some eight years ago by the adop-
tion of what is known ae "official testing."
Under thio plan all teete made are direct.
ly supervised by a capable dairyman sent
as a representative of an experiment
station or agrioaltnrel college, who eeee
the oowe milked, weighs the milk, and
tests same in dnplioate with the Bab000k
teeter. The correctness of these teete
must be eworn'to by all concerned in con-
ducting them. The system has now been
,adopted by the Guernsey; Ayraiiire' i.Gd
Jersey Aeeooiation° of the United States,
but in Canada only the Holstein -Friesian
breeders have recognized the importanoe
of the movement, Tbey have recently
eatabliehed a "record of merit," In whiob
a cow may be entered only after making
an official teat for production of butter -fat.
The standard regniree that a two.yeap-old
heifer shall produce is seven tisaye at least
eight pannds of butter -fat, a three-year.
old heifer ten ponnde, a four.year-old dew
eleven and a half pounds, and a mature
cow thirteen pounds. This ie the highest
standard adopted by any eeeooiation and
it will doubtless have a very benefloial
effeot on the butter producing lanalftiee of
the breed in Canada. Other breeders of
dairy cattle might well take up tbie
matter aleo.

vxo GROWING IN ONTARIO.
I have been much pleaeed to see re.
porta in the Globe of the Rumen of a
Toronto man and of a Port Colborne mac
in growing fige. I wish to inform readers
of your valuable paper, eepeoially lovers
of hortioniture, that the fig eau be grown
to perfeotion in many other plaoeein
Ontario. I have a tree here in Goderioh
that has ripened fruit of the beet quality
every year for the past eight years.
I would like to send you a
sample, bat I have 90 many visitors to
see my garden, eepeolally when the figs
are ripening, that I may not save a
sample to Rend, They havebeen ripening
for the past two seeks,' and will not all
be ripe for ten days yet. For the benefit
of any who would lilte to grow fige, I
would say that anyone can grow them
who has a good frost -proof oeller. I put
my fig tree in the oeller as soon ae there
is danger of frost in the fall, and move it
out about the let of April, to the eolith
aide of a building, where 1 can cover it
when there ie a prospect of frost at might,
and about the 20th of May I place it in
its Bummer quarters, which ie the moat
sunny spot in the garden. and give it
plenty of water. As the fig le a Krone
feeder, it requires en applioation • of
liquid manure 000asionalty. For beet
reeulte it should be repotted every year
forthe first three years after starting,
when it will commence to fruit. Every
two or throe years after ;this will do for
repotting, if the tub is large enough and
fertilizer supplied to the soil. My tree
ie now 'standing in a tub made out of a
forty.gallon barrel, out into two halvee,
and the iaet three years i6 has ripened
about, 100 fige eaoh year. Hoping you
can give space for these notes on fig cal
tare, I remaia, a friend to horticulture.

HOUSEPAINTS !
When you ooneider about the painting of your house
the moat important thing to think of is, what hi the beet
quality of paint obtainable 7. The beet paint' to stand
the weather and look freeh for the Inogoet time? There
le only one answer to finis,, namely, that e paint made
TRAP E MARK with erendrem'.e R.B. Gal/SINS Lead, Fere Linseed 00,
and just enough D, yet, moat be the beet, ae this B. B.
Lead has for eG 10000 years been proved superior to all others. Suoh a paint is
Anchor Liquid House Paint, cud it is the only liquid paint made in Canada with
Brandram'e B. B. Genuine Witte Leed,
It ie a mistake for yon to nee auythiog but the very beet paint in painting' your
home. The eclat of patting ou the paint is nuttily about the Same as the coat of the
paint itself. A'°beep paint takes more time to make a reasonably good job with
than a good paint, and does not last Re long, nor look eo well. In fact the °heap paint
is the moat expeneive paint in the end. Make no . mistake. Use Anchor Liquid '
House Paint. It is a Pure White Lead, Zino and Linseed Oil Paint, and ie ae good
as Oa,, be made with onr choice al the very beet materials. Use it and got the moat
eatiefeotory reanite obtainable with paint.. Boid, y,—
