Judges -W. Ohesney, Tookeremith ;
R. B. Harris, Wroxeter.
There was a Up top display of horses
and among them many very fine animals.
In Durham cattle there were 45 animals,
the herds of D. Milne, R. Corley and P.
Robertson oontribting the majority of
them. A lot of splendid grade cattle'
were also in the show ring, D. Scott de
Son and M. H. Harrison, of Belgrave,
and Thomas Davidson, of Grey, be-
ing large exhibitors. The biggest falling
off was in the sheep as many owners
would not fetch them out in the rain.
Robert Nichol, W. H. MoOntoheon, J.
S. Cowan, A. Stevenson and P. Gibbons
had splendid pens of swine in addition to
several entries by others. Geo. W. Ir.
win, W. Carter, A. Baeker and D. A.
Lowry were to the front among the exbi•
bitore of poultry.
The inside department was a revela-
tion to many as to the display. Imagine
201 entries in ladies' work, 90 yards of
cotton not nearly acoommodating the
beet exhibit ever known in the history of
the Society. In addition to Mrs. Hale,
Mies McClelland, Miss Carder, Mrs. Mo.
Kenzie, Mrs. Stewart, Miss Ross and
Miss McCracken who had each a lot of
extra fine work, there were Miss Fieber,
from Newmarket, and Mrs. J. A. Fowler,
of Goderich, who were large contributors
to the array, while a score of other ladies
had from one to a dozen entries. The
array of flowers was beautiful, 94 separate
entries and Fine Arte were never better.
For a poor fruit year 116 entries showed
what might hays been expected had the
Drop been as good as usual.
East Huron bread and butter makers
were largely in evidence with a neat
commendable display. There were 26
entries in the competition for home made
bread alone and the same number in the
butter department. Some very notice.
able exhibits were there in the root and
vegetable line in which W. H. Ma -
0
Ca01S0n and O.
Henderson & Son took a
specially forward place.
The downpour of rain put the half
mile track, which was in fine condition
on Wednesd..y, out of business and as a
consequence all the attractions in the
way of speeding, ladies hitching up race,
foot and bicycle raoee, &c., had to be pall-
ed off to the great disappointment of the
Direotormte
and visitors.
It was thought the Richards' soap nail
driving oonteet would have to be cancell-
ed too but Mr. Robinson, the well known
traveller for the firm, assisted by Conn-
oillar Gerry, succeeded in getting com-
petitors and the°unigne and amusing con-
tent took place on the grass plot inside
the } mile track. There were 10 oon-
teetante and the way they hammered 6
wire nails, 4 inches long, into pine plank
was a caution. When this part of the
competition was over they had to ran 25
yards, pink up 50 cents worth of soap and
run baok to the plank with it. The
prizes were awarded as follows ;-Gold
watch to Maggie MoOlement, of 2nd
con. of Howiok township ; metal oared
watch, Kate `Mullin, of te Bed con. of
Grey township ; and the bronze cloak to
Myrtle: Nichol, of the 6th line of Morrie.
The other girls got the soap they pinked
up. There was a "kick" about the win-
ner being helped by an outeider gather-
ing up her amp for her but it was not
nobioed in the crowd of people by the
judges who gave their report as above.
Had the rale track- been fit this would
not have 000urred as constables were en-
gaged to keep the course clear. Jae. Mo.
Callum and family, of McKillop, 1I in
all, were the only oompetitore for 3, 13'.
Gerry'e banging lamp for biggest family
on the ground.
