To the Editor of THE PosT
A few points about Essex County may
be of interest of some of the many readers
of Tun Post. This comity is one of the
beet agricultural Counties in the province.
In many respects it varies a great deal.
The Nortbern half is very level, almost
free from stones, and good water ie hard
to get. The Southern part fs rolling quite
stony and good water is easily obtained.
All the County is fertile Corn is the
principal crop but oats, wheat, hay, eta.
are produced also. Peas and wheat do
not do so well, especially in the Northern
part. The pea weavel and Hessian fly do"
much damage here, Tobacco and fruit
are also grown extensively. A11 this
County was once heavily wooded but the
greater part of the forest has disappeared
dnriug the last half century, Oak, hick
cry, elm, ash, beech, maple and button
wood are the chief woods, ceder, pine mad
hemlock are scarcely met with. The
difference in climate between Essex and
Huron is remarkable. Although there is
very little difference in latitute. yet the
climate here is mnoh milder. This Winter
there was just four weeks sleighing.
Snow came on the first Sunday in Feb•
n March.
the first undo I M o
roar and went Sunday Y
Then shore was not a foot on the level at
any time. Pitoltltoles are unknown. Gen-
erally there is not over two or three weeks
sleighing here in the Winter. This County
is well supplied with railroads, four
lines -the G. T. R. (double tracked), 0.
P. R., M. O R. (to be double tracked this
Summer) and the L. E. & D. R. R. run
across the country. A charter is now be
lug applied for for a eleotrio railway to
run from Windsor to Chatham. It is ex-
pected to be in operation next Summer.
Natural gas ie found in the South near
Lake Erie. Tho pressure there is beoom•
ing low and it is causing much trouble.
People ore trying to stop the export of the
gas Borons the river to Detroit on this. e0

New sin Dress Goocts.
Does it seem strange to show Spring Dress Goods, to talk Spri ng Dress (1004 when theweath-
er is so oold ? • Why not ? The early Spring Costume are to be made of cloth 'attd one fails to get
the best service from a cloth suit unless it is bought early. We are thinking only of Spring, the new-
ness is the newness of Spring, and we'd not be the leaders if we dwelt too much on Winter. The new
fabrics for Suits as well as the lighter weights for Dresses all show that plain weaves and plain colors
are the ruling styles, don't feel that you are limited in choice thereby, not at all, color range is superb,
and these plain goods offer the widest scope of treatment, in harmony or by contrast, in the making.
