'Every I'rovinoe in the Deminion, except Ontario, bee given a Liberal majority. Manitoba lead a aloee call though. LAST weep Hon, A. S. Hardy, ex. Premier of Ontario, was whited up. friends: and re. ar ofn 1 on byausimb- hisp seated with a puree of geld as en exprea. sion of the bigb esteem in whiob ha is held. Mrs, Hardy was made the re. oipient of a silver nervine. TinCanadian Beath African Contin- gent, under command of Col. Otter, who have been feted and feasted in England, sailed on the steamship Lake Champlain on'Wedneedey of this week from Liverpool and will be home in time for Xmas. They will be heartily welcomed to their respective homes. IN North Brace Mr. McNeil, Indepen- dent Conservative, was elected on Nov. 7th by one vote. A recount seas held and the judge threw oat ballots that the Liberals thought should have been oonnt- ed and have appealed the ease. With only one of a majority there is not a great deal 31 room for shrinkage. DBwET continues bo play hide and Beek with the British in South Africa but the cordon is tightening and hs will soon bave to either surrender or flee for his life. He is a remarkable man bot his following appear to be kept in line by mierepreseatation and the spinning of fairy tales as to the true state of affairs. A goodly portion of the Transvaal and the Orange State are very anxious for.the war to cease. Tea Mail and Empire says the Ontario Government intends to attempt the re. dietribution of the Beats in the Local fioues before the next election, which will take place within 18 months. It Days New Ontario will receive inoreased representation at the expense of Eastern Ortario, which bas declined in popula- tion, and this will open the door to a pretty general redistribution of seats in the rural sections of the province. And six seats now bald by the Opposition will be wiped oat and six added whish will re. tarn Liberals. Ton Liberals of the Province of Que. bee in its Local Legislature elections carried the day with a regular sweep leaving the Oppositions with only 5 esata, the same as in the resent Do• minion oontest. There is not mush doubt but that each majorities are too large ss better and more careful work is usually done when the parties are more evenly divided in Herniae of Parliament but as the people mile the legislators west abide by their decision and owing to the compliment paid and the con. fi lance reposed should rise every effort to advance the beet interests of the land. h pbsea H ko a greater s taot than at present is ,beim done 1 (5) That the Warden and Clerk Signa memorial to tbeLegislature embodying the above and invite tate other Oeunty Ooauoils of the province to oo•operate, Tan Loi dos, England, Board of Trade retarns for 11 months ending Nov. 30th, show the following British imports from Canada :—Increases — British imports : Cattle, 5950,000 ; wheat, 52,045,000 ; oats, 51,960,000 ; peas, 5195,000 ; bacon, 51, 630,000 ; hams, 5705,000 ; cheese, 53,- 630,000 ; eggs, $235,000 ; fisb, 51,430,000 ; pu'p wood. 5500,000 ; hewn wood, 54,245,• 000 ; sawn wood, 51,715,000. Ix is said that the coming year will sea anunprecedented boom in Northern Ontario both as to developing the mines and settlement of farm lands. Sault Ste, Marie has done a great deal during title year to establish oouftdeaoe in the North. Orly seotion of We country and by care. fel management great stridee should be evldenoed in the next few years, One Oaetoms and ueoages are disappear.. ing one by one and are giving plows to more modern ways, Instanoea might be multiplied in proof of this etatemena but one will suffioe just now, In ye olden time the slipper, the shingle and the time honored sirup wars need by the paternal head of the house to enforce law and order but the other day at Evansville, Indiana, U. S., four lade were given pub- lic chastising by their parents, at the request of a Judge before whom they ap- peered, charged with theft, and instead of the old fashioned implements of war an old bicycle tire was substituted and be- fore a big crowd of onlookers the boys cried "pncavi l" We have heard of tag• ing the wind out of fellow's sails but this is rather an improvement on some etylee of doing it, and the bioyele will now lose mush of its charm to the youth as be learns of the new uses of the silent steed, Owren to the crowded state of Huron County House of Refuge, there now being 84 inmates, it has been decided to build an extension to the building next year. The present house is supposed to have accommodation for 75 inmates so that the limit is long since passed and as a oonsequenoe a portion of the basement has to be utilized for sleeping accommo- dation. More room is also required in the hospital department as there is con. stantly a class of patients there who are unfit for any other plass. It was thought at first that the old folk would drop oil very gnickly at the House owing to age and infirmity in so many oases but tbie bas not been borne out although last month there were three deaths bat Bo many are looking for admission that the number continues to increase rather than decrease. A stricter watch will be necessary in the admission of inmates as in more than one instance persona have been committed to tb%House of Refuge whose proper piece was the insane or idiot asylum. These Houses of Refuge are now to be found in almost every large Connty in Ontario and the othere will, in all probability, soon follow snit. THE election in Barrard and Yale. Cariboo completes the members of the House of Commons. The prinoipal standing of the 213 members of the Hoose of Commons is as follows : Ontario— Liberals, 06 ; Conservatives, 56. Mc- Ewen (South Heron) and McCarthy (North Bfmooe) are alarmed as Liberals. Robinson (West Elgin) and Thornton (West Durham) as Conservatives. Que. bee—Liberals, 57 ; Conservatives, 7 ; Independent, 1, (Girourd, of Chicoutimi), Nova Bootia—Liberals 15; Conservatives, 5, Prinoe Edward Island—Liberals, 5 ; Ooneervatives, 2. New,Branewiok—Lib. erals, 9 ; Conservatives, 5. Manitoba— Liberals, 3 ; Conservatives, 2 ; Indepen. dents, 2 (Patteeend Richardson). North• west Territories—Liberals, 4 ; Conserva- tives 0. Britieb Colombia—Liberals, 3 ; Conservatives, 2 ; Independent, 1 (Ralph Smith). The total %bowing is, therefore, as follows :—Liberals, 129 ; Conserve. fives 80 ; Independents, 4 ; total, 213. The Liberals bave majorities in seven of the eight Provinces, the exception beiog Ontario. THAT the old style of road making is a thing of the past is very apparent and a final farewell may soon be said to statute labor. The Special Committee of the waterloo County Connell at their recent eeasion brought in the following reeom• mendatione regarding the furtherance of the good roads movement: (1) That the Municipal Aat should be amended so as to provide more effectual methods of having the township roads opened after anew atones and kept open during the Winter months ; (2) That tin Municipal Ast should be further amended so that a vote shall be token in every township where it has not already been done on the question of doing away with the present system of statute labor tax and the money so derived to be anent by contract under the supervision of the township ooanoils ; (3) That the Govern. ment fix a standard width and grade of the travelled portion of roadways through. out the province ; (4) That the Govern. meta adopt some moans to induce the planting of shade trees along the public Huron County Council Election.
