Last Sabbath eveningRev. Jno. Holmes
preached a sermon in the Methodist
church oo "The Sin of Gambling." The
text was Ezekiel 22:13, 14. The speaker
did not mince matters and said in part :
-Gambling is a growing social and
national curse which should 138 denounced
and exposed by every right thinking per.
son. All games of chance for stakes is
gambling, as is risking money on lottery
races, elections, &c. Under the
pretence of business of buying and Belling
etooke there is often nothing beneath
but ganabling, which is another name for
swindling schemes. The love of gambl-
ing and consequently its seductiveness,
which is but a daredevil love of hazard,
is deeply seated in fallen, sinful human
nature. It Genital as naturally to enure
le lying, swearing, thievery or dranken•
nese, with which vices 10 10 properly
classed. It is one of the most selfieh,
vicious and over -powering habits than
oan poesess a 0000 09 affliot a community.
What fortunes it has wasted ; what lives
it has wreaked ; what reputations it ham
smirched; what homes it hae blasted. No
defenoe non be made for it • it is "Evil
only evil and that continually." It is a
devouring fire ; a wasting canker ; a dry
rot (except Whet] moistened by the drink.)
The he.bit•headened gamster would gam-
ble at his brother's funeral or shake dice
oo hie mother's coffin. Risks were taken
at the door of a °lab house on the chanciee
of the recovery of a man who had fallen
down apparently dead, and when it was
proposed to bleed him it was objected to
as it might effect the stakes. The gamb-
ler expecte gain without merit and silo.
oese only at another's lose. It's rewards
are never deserved. 15 10 daylight or
midnight robbery as the ease may be.
11 18 anti-sooial as it etrikea at the basis
of sooiety by destroying honesty, industry
and thrift. It has been said that "the
gambler is a fool or a scoundrel or both."
He ventures everything for "play," hop-
ing to make rioh, dies poor, and goes to a
dishonored grave' under the earn of
ruined lives and broken hearts. All
Rambling places, whether no -cloned re-
spectable hotels or other reeorts, are
rightly called "hells." The evils of
gambling should be frequently explained
and the already stringent laws against it
rigidly enforoed, which we know are not.
Before it is even diminished we meet
have a more pronounced public opinion
on the subjeot. Good has only one
enemy.; Evil has two, good and hunt
Righteousness tendeth to life but be that
parausth evil, pnreneth it to his own
death. Denounoe gambling but pity the
gambler.
