Thnckeray and the Cabman.
Thackeray Loved to relate jokes on
himself, and one he especially enjoyed
was about a Reading hackman. The
author was unacquainted with the
town, and the moment he emerged
from the railway station he told a
es backney coachman to drive hint to the
nearest hotel. The driver closed the
door ceremoniously, mounted his box
and they started. In half a minute the
cab was at a standstill and Thackeray
saw the cabman at the door, bowing
, to him to come out. He did so with-
out a word, and found that be was at
the portico of the station hotel, which
he had failed to see was not a dozen
yards off.
But he banded the man a shilling and
was entering the betel, rather pleased
with bis own sang frold, when be wns
amazed to see the cabman taking off
his coat and offering to "fight him
for the other sixpense." It appears
that on that day a' resolution of the
Reading towu.council had come into
operation empowering backney coach-
men to charge elghteenpence for any
distance within the township. This
was its first fruits! It Is unueeeseary
to add that the cabman got his money
and Thackeray a good story to tell at
the clubs.

most severely frum pains coursing up

that these pains were due lc liver

cause they eregacntly left me in ter-

ways confinad'to the back, but would
shift to other parts of the body. As
a result I got little rest, nay appetite
became impaired, and I felt of great-

BIGGEST EXPLOSION.
ft Occnred 1l1 Johannesburg 01x Tears
,too.
The recent explosion at the arsenal;
in Johannesburg is by no moans the
first experience that the Boers have
had of the frightful powers of high
explosives.
On .February 19, 1806 some 55 tons
of blasting gelatine and 90 cases of
detonators were lying in a train
standing in a siding situated some
300 yards to the west of Johannes-
burg Station. Owing to the careless-
ness of a pointsman of the Nether-
lands South Africa Railway, a second
train was inadvertently run into the
rivet. The explosion tient followed
baffles all description.
It suffices to say that Lho fearful
energy of the liberated gases tore a
huge trench SOU feet long, 80 feet deep
and 65 feet wide in the stiff, clay soil;
that pieces of the engine were blown
more then a .mile away ; that. (upward
of 50 pcoplowere known. to 11mvq been
killed, while the islknslly heap of
nuingled limbs, which filled upward of
20 sacks, probably accounted for many

the adjoining home property was re-
ale were rendered hotneless.
WHAT ICELANDERS EAT.
In Iceland the native's dinner usu-
ally consists of dried fish and butter.
The fish is ling or cod, which, when
caught is split and then hung on the
linos by the seashore to dry in the
cold winds and hot. sun. When thus
presorvod, they wilt keep for years,
being as hard as the nether millstone,
When wanted for [lienar, the fish is
well hammered by a stone mallet and
then cul, up into stripe. In this
stale they are enten, but It is said
that it needs an Icelander's teeth to
got through the meal. The butter
is not spread on the fish, but the two

One of Ibe revelations of 'the war
hats been the extent and the cxccllenoe
of Lhe Boer armament, says a London
letter, That the Transvaal Govern -
merit were preparing for the inevit-
able woe whispet'ed from limo to time
after the Jameson raid. Guns and am-
munition were brought into the eoun-
try ay the obliging Netherlands Rail-
way Company, who, notwlthetanding
Lite fact that the oases were labelled,
"Pianos, with care," and "Mining ma-
ohinery," must have known that the
geode transmitted along their line for
the T'ranevaal Government were less
Innocent than the external appear -
ante indionled,'At any rate, the or-
dinary residents of the Transvaal
knew it, and the knowledge was n mat-
ter of general comment both in Pre-
toria and Johannesburg.
One thing, however, was not gener-
ally known, that the Transvaal Gov-
ernment, gave an order to the firm
of. Sehneidsr-Canet, of Creusot, in
France, for two of the largest guns
ever constructed for any Governnvont.
These huge pieces of ordnance were
of 12 -in. and 91 -2 -in, calibre respeo-
Lively, The fact has only recently
name to light, and the question arises
for what purpose are diesel guns in-
tended?
n-tendedf
The power of a 12-ineb gun, such
as that now in the possession of the
Boers will be better appreciated when
it is explained that it fires a
PROJECTILE WEIGHING HALF A
TON.
which can penetrate a target of solid
steel four inches thie'k. The gun weighs
Gil Lone. The 9 1 -2 -in. gun is lighter, and
tires a shell weighing three hundred-
weight. '
Both of these guns are too beavy
for the eystem of fighting which the
Baena have pursued up to the present;
in fact, they are too cumbersome for
,land warfare altogether. Guns of this
{ calibre are common enough on battle-
ships wad in forts; but as part of
a mobile, oouetantly shifting army
like that of the Boers, they are too
heavy, too slowly loaded, and no more
effeotive than the lighter, more eas-
ily transported and more quiekly fir-
ed pieces which the snowy is now us-
ing. Under the circumaranoes, what
object had the Boer authorities in
view when they gave the order for
these enormous gone it
One explanation 1s that they were
intended to assist the Transvaal in its
designs on Delagoa Bay. Another is
that they were the nucleus of Presi-
dent Kruger's great dream of a Trans-
vaal Navy 1 The Anglo -German -.Port-
uguese agreement nipped in the bud
the former scheme; an S.A.R. navy
never came within the range of pos-
sibility at any time; so there would
appear to be no mission at all for
those giant cannon from Creusot.
Bat the Transvaal Government
would not go to the expense of buy-
ing the guns unless there 8005 some
well-defined object in view. That they
had sucli an object is now clear. The
guns are in the Transvaal at the
present time; they have not moved
out of the Tranevaal since the out-
break of •hoetilities-they are being
kept for the momentous day when
the
GREAT AND FINAL STRUGGLE
will take place.
These guns, whose shells can wreak
solid stone buildings ns completely as
if their objective were so much card-
board, are believed to be at Pretoria,
mounted on substantial bastions in
the fort, and intended to resist the
British when the m'arah on the Trans-
val capital takes place.
A gentleman who for three years
resided in Pretoria, and is at present
in London, informs the writer that
Gn artillerist whose duty it may be
to work thee° guns, tuns indieereet
enough to assert, some days after the
outbreak of the war, that, if (the. Bri-
tish entered. Pretoria, and there ap-
peared no hope of preventing its fin-
al capitulation, the Creusot guns
would be turned on the town itself,
and the invaders would be buried un-
der the ruins I All that, of course,
providing the British do not capture
the fort at the ()utast l
Such, then, is believed to be the
purpose of these destructive guns,
around which so much mystery has
gathered, and whose existence the
Transvaal Government, has made such
Careful, if vain, efforts to keep sec-
ret.
