A marvellous change has been wrought at Khartoum, The city is rising again above the ruins of the old town at tate junction of the tiro navigable branches of the Nile. 13leery M. CadeIl has just published in the Scottish Geographical Mager zing a flue plan of the new city, showing the wonders that have boon done since tho Mandists Woro over- thrown, Tho streets, of course, are not nearly completed, and some of them are as yet only outlined, They aro laid out on a geometric system, but monotony is prevented by tho irre- gular introduction her and there of squares and public gardens. The Blue Nile, which forms the northern boundary of the city, is overlooked by the River Esplanade, a line street on which the principal public buildings are erected. Fore- most among them is the Sirdar's -palace, whose simple, but noble, front with its white walls com- mands the river, while behind it is a wide expanse of blooming gardens. It is built over the spot where Gor- don fell. West of the palace are the Gov- ernment buildings, a largo block of red brick, most substantial in ap- pearanee and of tasteful design, overlooking to the south a large public garden now in course of de- velopment. Among other prominent edifices are a handsome postofllce and the Mohammedan mosque for tite Mos- lem inhabitants in the center of the Abbas square, about half a mile back from the river. At the ex- tromo west end of the river Esplan- ade are the handsome Municipal Gardens, with many species of tro- pical trees, and shrubs, and flower- ing plants kept fresh by CONSTANT IRRIGATION. Near these gardens, in the nticlst of a grove of paltry, is the new ho- tel built and maintained -by the Soudan Development Company. It has accommodations for 60 guests, It is said to bo very comfortable and well managed, and its prices aro moderate in comparison with other hotels in more civilized parts of the Nilo Valley. Khartoum has ewo banks, the Na- tional and the Bank of Egypt, They stand exactly opposite ono another on the same street, so that each cashier may conveniently study his competitor's customers and the amount of daily business transacted. We hear frequently of bears in the Stock Exchange, but lions in banks aro probably not quite so common. One of the banks keeps a young lion on tho premises as a pet. Its erect in attracting new customers has not yet been mentioned. Opposite the palace grouncls stands the new Gordon statue andan edi- lice that is a far greater monument to the hero of Khartoum, the Gor- don College, which rises gaunt and bare in the midst of a treeless, sandy enclosure several acres in ex- tent. It was built by subscriptions raised in England, the sunt of $700,- 000 being quickly collected in the days of national enthusiasm after ICitchener's decisive victory .over the Dervishes in 1898. Of this money, the sunt of $100,000 has boon spent in the erection of the present col- lege building. As yet the students aro few in number, and the success of the college remains to be assur- ed. Of course, Khartoum has a club with its newspapers, tennis courts, and boundless hospitality to \isit- o' of importance. Tho building of the. Soudan Club is a most tasteful and co=nod ions structu re standing IN A SHADY GARDEN. All the streets are broad and stralght. The finest amen them is Khedive avenue, 150 feet wide and two ndles long, with double rows of Iebbek trees on .Dither side and foot paths 80 feet broad; and Victoria avenue, broad and straight, which runs southward to the Gordan sta- tue, dividing tho city into two equal parts, Tho public buildings and private official residences are built in the choice part of the city, between the river and Khedive avenue. The sec. and zone parallel to this is bounded on the south by Sirdar avenue and is intended for good two-storey buildings. In the third section, fur- ther south still, smaller houses are going up, and the region south of this third zone is to be reserved for the native nyttd-walled houses and the lowest class of buildings, The true native quarter of the future, however, will probably be the Mah- dist city of Omdurman, fotir miles from Khartoum, Just below the junc- tion of the Blue and the White Nilo, Where the natives live close to the river, Of course, a great deal remains to be done at Khartoum, which will be a city largely in embryo until the trade of the country clevplops. As yet the exports of the Soudan con- silt chiefly of gum arabic, ivory and ostrich feathers, aluounting to only about 51,500,000 se -,year. lAe the country settles down the trado is gradually growing larger; but there will not be much encour- agement for farming on. the irrigable lands near Khartoum until a geed Market is opened for the crops, and this will nob ba effected until the proposed Suakim-Berber railroad is built, e r. How a Commercial Traveler Bur- nished His House—A Mean Affair, The examples of illegal acts com- mitted by engaged men and women occasionally reported in the press, suggest the problem as to what ex- tent crime in a lover should bo over- looked, tolerated, or excused by the promised partner. There aro cir- cumstances in which levo seems to coyer a multitude of sins in - this respect, Approaching nuptials have often been a direct cause of, and an incentive to crime. The equipment of a bridal trous- seau or the furnishing of a home has, in some instances, caused such a tax on the resources that minds of weak principle, or shallow moral training, have given way to -tempt- ation, and taken the' first step on the slippery path of dishonesty. Every girl, no matter what her po- sition in life may be, likes to be- gin her matrimonial career with a good outfit, and would probably scruple less to enrich herself at an- other's expense for this purpose than for almost any other. Not' is the sante feeling absent either in the oth- er sex. Most men like to start as well as they eats when commencing married life, and some are not very particu- lar how this is accomplished so long as it is done. Then, again, thorn are, or course, plenty o,f instances of love and . crime, strangely- inter- mingled, in which motives like rho foregoing have no lot or part. One case occurred, however, not long ago, in which a commercial traveler furnished his house, in ex- pectation of his marriage, on the proceeds of - A SERIES OF FRAUDS. being"ltaid on commission by his employers who did a large private trade and gave long eiteclit, his me- thod was to make up fictitious or - dors which were made to appear given by different customers. On each of those orders full commission was drawn in the game manner as if they had been perfectly genuine. Tho bulk of the goods ordered in this way, the ingenious gentleman Man- aged, by an artfully contrived 01'- 1'angetne:nt, to have conveyed to his house; part being afterwards dis- posed of to a confederate for cash. As tho firm's accounts were only sent Mit once a ,year, the frauds in question were undiseovcred for s0nt0 time. Just on the ova of his mxtr- I well lcnpwn to the pollee, Needless, perhaps, to say, the lesson was not lost upon the deluded swain. A rather mean aii'ctir was that of a young business man who had been engaged for several months 1,0 a clover lady, who made some preten- si011 to skill in pttllnistry. She had practiced the art for a considerable time with the full knowledge anti npjtrovai of ries' fiance. It proved to her a lucrativo profession, and a capital help towards providing for the home whichthey hoped soon to share, All went well until about a month before the date fixed for the wedding, when the police interfered and the case got into the. papers, This was enough for the heroic 6111t - or, who suddenly developed queer qualms of conscience, asked for the return of the engagement ring, and broke olT the match with brutal bluntness, making the miserable -ex- cuse that the publicity given to the case would be sure to injure his business. A good deal removed from the us- ual order of rontanco was the en- gagenont of a girl, whilst got in her teens, to a love', who, for the sup- posed CRIME Ole ARSON, was sentenced to three years' peter servitude. 'Firmly believing in her lever's innocuuea, site net only bravely trailed the long, weary time for his release, but, during the tedi- ous interval, managed to save suf- ficient money to stock a little slto and establish herself in a small way of business. Unfortunately for her, however, her industry and fortitude were as much in vain as hor confi- dence in her lover was misplaced. Within a few days of his release, ho borrowed all her loose, uninvested cash, and, on the plea of visiting London to purchase his wedding out- fit, decamped, omelettes never since been heard of by his betrayed and swindled fiancee. Instances of this kind show that love, however true and tender, should not be allowed to outrun dis- cretion. It is possible for a man or woman to be careful in judgment re- garding a prospective partner with- out incurring the charge of being over -suspicious, Thero are ,..some Mimes which, under certain condi- tions, love night freely forgive, but there are others which no considera- tions would render pardonable. p THE AVERAGE BABY, The average baby is a good baby --cheerful, smiling and bright. Whew ae is cross and fretful it is because t o is unwell and he is taking the )ply means he has to let everybody snow he docs not feel right. When Baby is cross, restless and sleepless don't dose him with "soothing" ;turfs which always contain poison. Baby's Own Tablets are what is needed to put the little ono right. ;live a cross baby an occasional rabbet and sec how quickly ho will be transformed into a bright, smil- ing, cooing, happy child. He will sleep et night, and the mother will get her rest too. You have a guarantee that Baby's OWn Tablets ontain not ono l particle of opiate or hrt'armful drug. In all the minor ail- ments frau birth up to ten or twelve years there is nothing to equal, the 'ablets. Mrs. W. B. Anderson, Gou- leis River, Ont., says : "My little troy was very cross and fretful and lve got no rest with him until we i,egan using Baby's Own Tablets. Since then baby rests well and he is pow a fat, healthy boy," Von can get tho Tablets fronn any Druggist., or they will be sent by mail at 25 cents a box by writing eircct to the Dr. Wllliams' Medicine Co., Brockville, Ont. IID COULDN'T SDE, A showman was snaking a great noise at the front of his exhibition of the wonders he had to show. A mart standing in the crowd, with a little boy beside him, cried out: "I'll bot you a dollar you cannot let Ina me a lion." "Done," said the showman, eager- ly. "Put down your money." Tho neap placed a dollar in tho hand of a bystander, and the show- man did the same. "Now, walk this way," said the showman, "and I'll soon convince you. Thero!" said ho, triumphant - Y. "look in that corner at the beau -- Mel N'urnidlun lion." "I don't sea any," responded the other, "What's - the matter with you?" asked the showmitn. "I'm blind," was the reply; and in a few minutes the blind man pock- otdd the two dollars, and wont away. Another example of love and crime was furnished at a fashionable pleasure resort last summer. A fas- cinating adventuress succeeded in imposing upon a largo number of visitors, and ' also managed to so charm the mind and capture the heart of a young admirer that ho offered to marry her. It happened to come to his knowledge, however, that the enterprising lady had es tablished her credit at the hotel whore she stayed by means of refer ekes from a well-known London so- licitor, with whom, strange to say, tho smitton adorer was ON FRIENDLY TERMS.
