The Strathroy Age of last week boa
the following account of a farewell pree-
entation to Rev. W, T. Olnff, the Doming
pastor of St. James. churoh, Stratford,
and hie wife:
Rev. and Mrs. W. T. Cluff, whose
sojourn in Strathroy is feat drawing to
a Diose, were agreeably surprised at
the parish rooms of 95, John's choroh,
last evening, where a large gathering of
admiring friende, including not only
members of the Episcopal church, but
quite a number of outsiders as well gath-
ered to spend a sooial hour, before the
genial rector and his family say good-
bye. The hall was neatly decorated for
the occasion and the affair was carried
out as informally and pleasantly as pos-
sible. It was the last time they would
be privileged to meet together as pastor
and people and the oocaeion was, there-
fore, marked by intermingled feel-
ings of happiness and regret—pleased
that their pastor has been selected for a
more important charge and regretting
that hie labor here, marked as it was by
nothing but cordiality and agreeableness
on every band, is about to close. The
sincere sentiment in the hearts of all his
parishioners and his hosts of outside
friende as well, is clearly set forth in the
following addrees which was read by L.
H, Dampier at an opportnne time :
Reverend W. T. 01aff:
Rnv, AND Dealt Sm.— The members of
St. John's church and other friends of
yours have met together this evening to
bid you farewell, and wish you theme
in your new and greater field.
We desire in the first piece to express
our appreciation of your serviced since
you came to St. John's parish over six
years ago. During that time tbo most
perfect harmony has reigned in our
church, not a single discordant note bas
been etrnok, and rector and people have
worked together for the welfare of the
church. Muth good has resulted from.
your efforts. The words of counsel and
eu000ragement that have fallen from
your lips, have, we believe inspired many
a kindly deed and word, and citified many
an evil thought. Your influence for
good will be sadly missed, not only in
our ohurch, but in the community. Our
material progress since yon Dame has
been very marked. The interior of the
churoh has been renovated and decor-
ated and new lightning ftxtnrea installed
at a coat of over 0400. We have built a
new porch for the rectory, and had a
walk laid in front of the thumb, each of
which poet 51.00, A new furnace bas
been put in the rectory at a cost of ono;
bat the crowning glory of all, this Parish
Home has been emoted, and less than
5500 is not provided for oat of a total cost
of nearly 53,000,
We say good bye to you with keen re-
gret, knowtug that in losing you we are
losing a zealous ohurabman, an earnest
rentor, but above all a faithful friend.
We rejoice in the preferment that you
have earned at the honor of the Bishop,
and pray that you may long be spared in
health and strength to serve the Blaster
in your new home.
Itis our great pleasure to present to
you and to your wife these gifts as a
token of our esteem and a$oction, and to
remind you of the years you epent ns
rector of the church of St. John the
Evangeliet at Strathroy.
To yon and to Mre. Cluff we extend
every kind wish and prayer for your fu-
ture success and happinesaia your future
life. Signed on behalf of the congrega-
tion of Strathroy.
August and., A. D., 1905.
The remembrances mentioned hi the
above were then presented, conoieting of
a handsome oabinot of sterling silver ont-
lery and out glees water pitober with
goblets.
The reoipient made a touching reply,
conveying the appreoietion on behalf of
himself and family, of the kindly regard
they so amply betokened by the beautiful
gifts. He also toughed upon his happy
sojourn among the citizens of Strathroy,
who had extended s0 many kindneesys.
and courtesies during that time. He
soured them he could not easily forget
the warm friendships formed daring his •
pastorate in Strathroy,
The remainder of the evening was then
passed in the freest and 1210131 cordial
manner, the energetic ladies of the oburah
dispensing an appetizing tea, which all
heartily enjoyed,
Rev. Mr. Oluff's pastorate will draw to
a close next Sandey when he will prone')
his farewell entwine.
