IP the resent ofvio elation in Toronto le a correct wimple of ounaelntive voting then it should be buried in the bottom of the deep, deep sea. NEXT Tuesday will ba election day in North Oxford for the Loa' Legislature. The oandideees are Col. Munro, of Embro, representing the Liberal peat - form and Robb. E. Butler, of Woodetooki Conservative, D. R. Rae, the Prohibit. iouiet, has rehired. Paco. antis, who has occupied the position of Principal of the now splendid ly eetabliahed Ontario Agricultural College at Geelpb for nearly 26 years with marked amass, has accepted a seat on the Railway Oommissiou. The other members of the Commission will be Zion, Mr. Blair and Mr. Bernier, The latter in a farmer, They will have many important questions of vital inter- est to the public to deal with, Ammon Parliament will meet early in Marsh and a short session will be - held to deal with the Grand Trunk Pacific railway question ; the Railway Oommiaaion and other matters of importance. Bye elections will be held in the vacant constituencies at once. Speaker Broder has taken a portfolio and the probabilities are that Deputy Speaker. Dr, MacDonald, of East Huron, may oounpy the ebair for the Doming session, Jun Posr ie of the opinion that the Farmers' Institutes would extend their infineroe mnob wider if they took a greater interest in the Agricultural Societies ot the ooantty. They receive generous grants and large returns from annual excursions to the Modal Farm and might easily afford to offer a few liberal prizes at the respective Frill Faire in the ridings in whioh they are located and thereby practically show their intermit in an organization whose pe0uniary benefits are very largely returnable to the ferni- er, We make mention of this matter now as we are interested in both associa- tions, berme have some little knowledge of the existing state of afiairsin each and also that it might oome up at the annual meeting of the Institute next Jane. Ic ie oar bumble:belief that 425.00 could nob be expended to better advantage to the Institute itself either from an advertising or membership etaodpoint, IT ie about the season of the year for the annual meeting of Brussels Fire Brigade for the e]aotion of officers, receiv- ing v- ing the annual report and disbnrsing monies dne the firemen, When this gathering le held there are a few matters that should be discussed, whish in oar judgment would add to the efficiency of • the fire brigade. let, A greater person. al interest should be taken in the fire fighting appliances so that every member wouldbe intimately aogaainted with engine, hose cart and hole, nozzles, hy- drant,, water pipes, etc. This clan only be acquired by repeated inspeotions or drilla under competent direotion. 2nd. There should be regniar practises in lay- ing hoes, making or breaking conneotione, attaching to hydrants and - throwing 'water, oaretulnote being taken of the time oo0npied. Somebody • nye this would mean the expenditure of money, of course it would but eo does every fire mean the expenditure of money, an in addition to the firemen's pay there is elwaye a lois either to the town's aeaeee- ment or the proprietor whose property suffers. 3rd. The 04iet and Captain should take command at area instead of being among the busiest at work. Lima tenants should °arty out the Chief's orders and see that the carte and hose are properly looked after by some portio. alar partiee. People who, without auth• witty, give instructions contrary to this should be treated to a dose of oold water from one or more of the nozz'ea to teach them their plane. Some think thebrigade membereblp ehonld be redoaed and a larger fee paid ; that regular meetings should be held, at leash gearterly ; tbat the hook and ladder trunk should be Otted out with axee, laddere and ropes eo that at a trlomenb'e warning everything would be to hand ; that inetrnotione might be given as to ringing the fire alarm at both Town Hall and Pnblia School, so Piet a large number of people would know exactly where to run in ease of giving the nndesieble, yet very neoeoeary inti- mation ; that the "water gate" should he discovered and its adjustmeot made so plain that error would be next to import. Bible in its use that a eapply of cosi should be always atoned at the engine platform on river bank and the .approaab- ea to river and tanke Menne matte easy of amass. We know Boma wilt say it is cagier to recommend or oritloise than to amend er +tarry out. This is true hence the greater reason for the Connoil getting a move en them and supporting the brigade offlaere in carrying out the most modern methods abd improvements with- in renal. Triage are paid for expected first class fire proteotion and The tax. payer has a right to eepeot that bio prop. erty will be so, aoretulig gperded that t-. eerioge injury by fire will ae next to im• possible. Brussels has a front street uoeu' ee t a ed byany lase of its Ni size with y P r buildingelargely Are proof in tbe ordiaa, cry aooeptetiou of the term berme se tar as the baeieeee placate are concerned with oersted and prompt management of the eppllanoee at hand a eerioue fire should be almost oat ot the probabilities. No more important matter Dan claim the attention of the authorities, Batter workers at a fire than we have in one town would be hard to fled anywhere but we have beooma eo aoeuetotued to the use of steam fire fighting that the old bnoket brigade bee gone almost oompletely out of vogue, when sometimes a few pails of water, at the critical period, would mean the env i ng of m auy dollars' wor th of prop. erty. There should be a good rally of oar oitizene at the annual meeting eo that the Brigade wlold see that they are loyally and heartily beaked rip in what has often proven a thankless piece of work. Agitation of the right spirit le good and bends to the oarryiog out of improved metbods and aleo gives intoe• motion to the ratepayers eo that they will better understand and properly ep- preofate good work whenever or where. ever done. LECTURE ON FORESTRY BY A. LEES, B. A.,;ST. THOMAS. There was a good attendauoe at the Grange hall, Middlemarob, nobwithetand- iug the storm, to hear Mr. Lees' lecture on "Forestry". The lecture was in. stractive and received the close attention of the audience from start to fluieb, W. Webb, tbe Master of the Grange, 000apied the chair. Mr. Lees commenced by referring to the struggles of the early settlers to out down the forevt and prepare the land for cultivation. In the fight with the foreet pertain conditions belonging to the forest, the slimes and the fertility of the soil, had not been considered until too .late. Everyone realized now that toomnob of the forest had been cleared away, This was learned by the drying up of apringe and rivers and the lank of moieture in the cultivated fields, Statieties were given to show the per- centage of forest sees in different conn tries, and it was learned that the area in Soatbern Ontario was lees than in Ger. many where agriculture had been eaten- elvely aoadacted for more than a thousand years. The Speaker then gave an a000unt of the recent sale of timber limits by the Ontario Government to ebow the great value of timber at. tbe present day in oompareion with former years, The timber on the wild rooky lands in Muskoka had been sold for fifty dollars an acre, which wag the price of good farms in Elgin. A. large revenue had been derived by the province of Ontario at its timber limits, whish were exten- sive, but which would soon be °leered of forest if provision were not made for renewal. Fires were often ae destruotivo to the forest as the age, and it had been deemed et neoeseity to employ men to guard against firee both on the Govern. met on the lumber men'e limits. Me. Lees then dieoaesed tbe question of re foreetering the 11ortb part of the prom ince and by this msaue scouring a per- petual revenue for the people. He spoke of the reserves already set aside for the purpose and the mode of prooedere in ssoaring a new stook of trees. He explained the methods punned in Germany to preserve the forests, and allowed the great euo0eee whish had re - milted. 'Theta wag no question bat that more attention shield be paid to tbe question in Canada, and genre the beet rent te, A School of Forestry should be eetabliahed and one of the forest reeervea should be planed at the dispoeal of the school for experiments, Mr. Leen gave practice! advice to the termero present regarding the trees yet remaining on their farme.
