OUR WINNIPEG LETTER Two events of the week of great in terest to Winnipeg were the extension of the boundaries of Manitoba 'and the fact that Winnipeg bank clearings pass ed the billion -dollar mark. The value o' tlanitoba's new territory is not lolly k.it.wn, but it is certain that the vast stretch of land that lies between the former Northern boundaryy of the pro- vince and Hudson Bay contains timber and minerals in large quantities It is also said that there are big tracts of land that can be cropped, and this is altoge ther probable since some of the very hest land in Manitoba is in the part that was up to this week, the • province's Northern limit. There should be fisher- ies too, of value and the sum total of things which may be turned to acoounf in a country where cities are growing as fast as they are in Manitoba• can hardly tail to be very great in Manitoba's newly acquired territory. The added area measures up to 106,304,000 acres and gives Manitoba .a total area of 229,926 :quare miles. An outstanding mark of Winnipeg's growth was set up when the city's bank clearings passed the billion -dollar point on November 23rd. The exact figures were $t,002,6o7,637, which means that the banking business of this city had in creased over that of last year to a cor- responding date, to the amouut of $16o,481,7is. 'there is yet about six weeks to go and December business is always heavy, so that the final summing up will place the ,bank clearing figures considerably above the mark made November 23rd. Only two other cities in Canada -Montreal and Toronto -have a bank clearings that amount to a billion h dollars yearly, and only eleven of the largest cities in the United States reach this mark. Mild weather keeps building opera- tions in Winnipegon the- move, and a phenomenal building year is being well rounded out. Plans for another big year in 1912 are already being laid out and include the building of a private dwelling to cost $i2o,000, a splendid betel and a huge, tweuty•story office block• Mayor W. Sanford Evans, who will retire from the office of chief executive of the city after the civic elections in December, was given the high honor of becoming the President of the Winnipeg Canadian Club. this week, Mayor Evans' new official positiou is a peculiar- ly appropriate honor, as be was one of the founders of the Canadian Club as a national institution and was president of the first Canadian Club -that of Hamil- ton, Ontario. Beck with reference to the advisabili- ty of the County undertaking the,, development of the Maitland River powers. Air. Beek explained at length the plans of the Commission for the extension cEt he system in the North- ern counties. The trensmieston Bee for the Enron system was planned to connect with the Niagara line at Sea - forth. Huron while supplying its own power, would be linked up with the rest of the Provincial system. Iron. MreBeek stated to the Globe that the three schemes for the North, in Huron, Grey and Bruce, would in- volve an expenditure of between $1,500,000 and $2,000,000 Inc power de- velopment and transmission lines. If all the municipalities in the three Counties came in the outlay for trans mission lines would perhaps be still larger although the burden upon the municipalities would be lighter. The total amount of power in sight, on the three rivers is estimated at from twelve to fifteen thousand horse-- power orse-power during the high water seasons. The minimum in the dry _season will be abotit three or four thousand horse power. Aecocdiug to Hon. Poor I How true it is in many different walks of lifethat"a little child Abell lead them." We have been shown a copy of a letter written of St. John, N.B., who only a bya lady, month ago lost her little child, a girl of nine years, of tubercular trouble. The mother's own words tell the story better than it can be told In any other way. She writes to the Secretary of the Muskoka Free Hospital for Consumptives at (ravenhurst in these words : " While my loved one was ill, I one night' opened some literature from you at har bedside. She asked' me what it was: I told -her it was a paper asking for sub• ecriptions to the Muskoka Free Hospital. for Consumptives, and showed her the pictures in the pamphlet. She &eked if she could not give wbat she had in her told her' 'Yes' -to little savings s bank I gu d send it. the doctor and he.wo 1 give it to utshe was too sink when he came again, B SO I am enclosing an express order for the amount I found in the bank, viz., $1.79, - u small subscription, but trust you will receive it in the spirit in which it was given."
