He has Mustard and many other stalwarts behind him so it may be a bot tlrae for Mr. Merrier. A farmer can loyally sing "God save the King" and at the same time pocket &• 0o a top additional on his hay crop fter Reciprocity conies to pass. Eingh Clarke, M. P. P., Editor of the I.ineardine Review, will oppose iohn Tolmie for the Commons in North Bruce. Mr. Tolmie had over5oo majori- ty at last election, The Hensalt Observer says :-The Conservatives of East Huron have chosen James Bowman, of Morris, ex. Warden of Huron as their candidate in the coming contest. He looks some- thing like Keit Hardie, the great Labor champion. M. Y. McLean, the well known Editor of the Huron Expositor, Sea - forth, received the Liberal Nomination for South Huron on Fri Svu daHen at sail A. Mustard and P. Lamont were also in the ballot. J. J. Merrier, a Zurich merchant, is the Conservative saandidate and promises to give Mac a lt3+ely chase but we expect to see the -latter win out. The Liberal candidate in Halton Co. in the election contest now on is Walter Harland Smith; of Ridgewood Farm, Trafalgar. He is an old Brussels boy, born here if we mistake not, his father having a cabinet maker's business in a build iosa 35 or 40 years ago, where THE Post black now stands. We wish Mr. Smith success in his campaign for more ,:reasons than "Should auld acquaintance be forgot."' At the Bordeu meeting held at Harris - ton Saturday Tgth inst., Jas. Bowman tie Conservative candidate for East Huron, was one of the speakers. He said fudging from the appearance of the audience they. were "a grand and pros- erous eo le." The had. banded to- gether to bring about Confederation, Why should they have this trade agree. ment with the United•States forced upon them ? Future ',prosperity depended upon independence of the United States, The fathers of Confederation had clone their best. He asked both Grit and Tory to unite in preserving Confederation, He Was a farmer himself, born and rais- ed on the farm. Pbe battle is set in array is West Huron with M. G. Cameron, Mayor of Godeich, leading the Liberal hosts while Barrister E. N. Lewis, of the same towp, carries the Opposition banner. Mr. Lewis has won two contests in the riding and is a great canvasser who pays little attention to public discussion of the • live. questions. His opponent who is a good debater, was M. P. P. fur several terms and knows the territory should win on Sept. 2xst. ex Reeve Thos. McMil- lan. of Hullett, was the only other name suggested at the Liberal Nominating Convention when Ma, Cameron was the choice by a close vote. OUR MONTREAL LETTER. The days when a voter in theProvinoe of Quebec could signify bis party politics by the nse of one or two words have slipped far far back on the calendar and the present campaign has opened herewith, the customary "rouge" or "bleu" explanation of the habitant's political inclinations meaning naught. Instead, when a man in the back parishes wants to tell you his sentiments it takes him a long time. Never have the farm dwellersbeen so well p. posted on the questionsloE the "how" as they;are at the opening of this campaign. Last election and the election before a man said be was rouge or blue and let it go at that. Ask him why and he variably re- plied with a shrug "Sais pas" or "jes' because," or else "my father he rouge too," Ask a back. country Frenchman to-daywhat his politics- are and he will sit down and argue with you for half a day. He's educated and educated up to the minute, One is for Laurier but a- gainst the navy, another for Laurier but against reciprocity, He'll tell you why and all about it. Some divesritfied fore- casts have been made as to how the re - suite will tally up in solid Quebec, How near sight any of them may be is, of course the question. on One thing is certain never, taking it all in all will a lessignorant vote have beeu cast. REDUCED INSURANCE RATES. Five years ago, the Fire Under- writers suddenly and very materialty in- creased their rates on Montreal risks. It Was contended that the heavy losses from fire which were occurring at that time were largely cbargeable to the in- adequacy of the city's fire -fighting equipment and the efficiency of these. woo were in charge of it. There was, naturally much complaining but on the whole the city accepted the situation of the Underwriters' estimate and the cty council began to discuss ways and means for remedying it. Until the advent of the Board of Control but little practical improvement was made to conditions, although the tide of general discussion continued to occasionally disturb the quiet of the City Hall, In the last nineteen months, however two and a half million dollars have been spent on new Water conduits, more fire apparatus and generally increasing the efficiency of the fire -fighting forces but, so far, the insurance rate has remained the same, The city is preparing a long re- port on the matter and the Fire Under- writers will be called upop to lower their rates,. After a season which brought ti bit too march rain m soule. parts, the crop 1, being btu had off with weather so splendidly clod. and warm that fields drat were gt eeli •••be- forehave ripened and are, being cut fast. A feature of the crop is the eariness of ripening in 5Jtnito ba: Many fields about Winnipeg baye been cut a week or ten days and the harvest is making rapid progress on all hands. Reports of yields from tate several districts bear out the forecast of 20U a p i 000 000 bushels of wheat made by experienced men someweeks k s aga:' Oats, barley ancl.flax are also due to make records and there has never been a better year for field crops. Market gardeners have done especial- ly well around about Winnipeg this year. There was a gendral scarcity of potatoes and the season has been a moist favorable one for this crop. The fields were planted early and most of them have done well. Early potatoes were dug the 15th of July, .and a gardener on the East side of Red River near Winnipeg, sold 178 bushels from three-quarters of an acre of laird at three dollars a bushel. This was no exception but the rule with all potatoes planted on early land. An- other gardener sold •$547.40 worth of cabbages from half an acre and had• his crop off by the 1st of August Prices for all fresh vegetables rule high in the Winnipeg market and their is a good demand for 411 the truck raised. The splendid crop outlook has at- tracted . much notice from tourists through the West and notice of a most practical nature in many cases.. Railroad men have been notably at- tracted by the flourishing state of'the West, and new lines into Winnipeg and the' West are planned. A. J. Darling, president of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul road and William Rockefeller, a leading direct- or, passed across the prairie provinces a few weeks ago and declared. that the sight of the Wheat fields and general prosperity of the country was a reve- lation to theta. These tailtoad offi- ciais were so strongly impressed with the possibilities for business in West- ern Canada that the road in which they are interested will secure • • an entrance into \Viunipeg at the very first opportunity. The Minne- apolis error St,. Louis, toad is another system that has been attracted by the West great growth of the CanadianRest and will build to the boundary, v at least,to connect .with the Great Nortern and Grand Trunk Pacific In this side. The Great Northern railroad is do- ing a big work with its terminal facili- ties in Winnipeg. After arsine trouble between thermal and the city on the matter ofg. rade crossings, the Great Northern officials g iffic els decided -to field the ptrint, and will build five subways to avoid the grade crossings coming into the city from the West. The work of the preparation includes the moving of 1,300 houses and building enormous freight sheds and yards at a point which will he highly advalitageous for the railroad and those who slap goods over it. For the present tbe Great Northern will use the•flne new Union Station as its pessetiger tesuninal. This station svgs opened for public use on the 70 of August after completion ata cost of a million and a half. Iti9' easily the finest railway station in Cau,ul t.
