JUST LIKE JACK.—The story going the
rounds that an umbrella man was beaten
to death by some rougbs from Arthur,
who brought him to the hospital at
Fergus after becoming alarmed at his
condition, is almost witbout foundation.
The feels are that an umbrella man by
the name of McCosh visited Arthur two
weeks ago, He had with him a dog and
some of the wags of the village got it
from him. This so enraged him that a
fight ensued, in which the umbrella
man was beaten. An information was
laid and the case was settled out of
court.
GET AFTER IT.— The trade territory of
a town is not all dependent upon the
distance to neighboring points. The
trade territory depends upon the enter-
prise of the merchants and residents of
the town, If a town does not reach
after the trade, it will come only as fast•
as it has to, and will grow as it is forced
to. But if the merchants go after busi-
ness in the surrounding country, ad-
vertising in every possible way, and
• making good every [word in their ad-
vertising, trade will come from au ever
increasing radius, the town will gain a
reputation for being awake, and it will
keep to tbe front. It is the men in the
town and not the men living within a
miles number of from it that
make the town good or bad for business,

Monday
afternoon at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Alex. Donaldson, 00 the

a feeling of the most profound sorrow in
that neighborhood. The name of John

and integrity in Scarboro Township, and
no man was better known or more
generally respected. A touch of especial
pathos is attached to the last days of

taken suddenly ill and expired within a
few hours. After the death of Mrs.
Paterson, deceased went to live with one
of his daughters, Mrs. Donaldson, and
itwas there and while engaged in writ-
inga letter Monday morning that he
was stricken with paralysis. He rallied
sufficiently to speak with some of the
members of his family, and passed away
at a o'clock, or five hours after the at-
tack. The late John L, Paterson. who
was in his 83rd year. was a native of
Scarboro and had lived there practically
all his life, devoting himself to agricul-
ture, In which he was eminently success-
ful. He always gave a helping hand to
the work of the Plowmen's Association
and the local exhibitions. His farm was
a model of neatness and good tillage.
