OUR WINNIPEG LETTER
--
It is a maxim among wheat -growers
that. J nue rains make a good crop cer-
tain. June rains have been unusually
bountiful this year', and crop reports,
are better than they were last year by
at least thirty per cent. This, com-
bined with the big increase of acreage,
gives promise of the biggest crop ever
harvested, a crop which is placed by
so'0 1
c nservative a man as William
Whyte, of the Oanadian Pacific Ra1F
road, al: 200,000,000 bushels of wheat
and an unestimated quantity of oats,
barley and flax.
A. crop estimate sent but by the
Nolthwest.Grain Dealers' Association
—prepared by Secretary Fowler, an
official who has a record for not slop-
ping Over in his figures—planes the
total area under crap in the prairie
provinces at18,052,710 acres, an in-
crease over last year's planting rang-
ing from 4per cent. on oats to 40 per
cent. on flax. The increase of wheat
acreage is 15 per cent. and 12 per rent.
in barley. The low percentage of in-
crease in oats is partly accounted for
by wet, weather that has interfered
with late planting in some sections.
N0(•. Fowler's report says the condition
of geowiug crops is the best since 1895,
that biggest of all big crop years in
the 'hest. •
As a result of splendid crop reports
from all over the West, business is
extremely good. All lines are flourish-
ing and prospects ate excellent for
continued good trade. Locally—as in
Vancouver and, to some extent, in
Calgary—labor conditions are
u
so
me
wlt disturbed but these disturban-
ces are expected to settleshort-
