Gambling is en the increase in
England. According to reports
Tom the British Anti -Gambling
League, organized gambling rs
malting gigantic strides, and this
despite the feet that the police have
made it very difficult for one to
ghee bets in London and the other
ig'cities of the kingdom.
It is stated• that whereas a con -
in; ago there were only twenty
oolcmakers in Groat Britain and
reload there are now some 30,000
nen getting their living wholly or
P in this way.
The turnover is estimated at ab-
ut $400,000,000 on horse racing
and $160,000,000 on football and
then sports.
The gambling evil, too, is spread'
ng alarmingly among women• an
hilclren and is restricted to no par -
miler class of society, There
save been forty-six cases of wom-
en bookmakers before the courts
n the last year.
The league has protested to the
government against the receipt of
°reign lottery circulars and called
he attention of the pollee to the
existence of many girls' betting
clubs.
To shew liow deeply the gambling
passion has taken hold, the direct-.
ors of the league declare there are
many bookmakers who stoop so
ow as to take bets for sixpence
or to shilling from girls or boys.

They Soothe Excited Nerves.—
Nervous affections are usually at-
tributable to defective digestion, as
the stomach dominates the nerve
centres. A course of Parmelee's
Vegetable Pills will still all disturb-
ances of this character, and by re-
storing the stomach to normal ac-
tion relieve the nerves from irrita-
tion. There 1s no . sedative like
them and in the correction of irre-
gularities of the digestive process-
es, no preparation has done so ef-
fective work, as can be testified to
by thousands.
