The Brussels Post, 1910-12-22, Page 6uoo.ei ;))35t THURSDAY, D3C. as, 19L0 H'A$ anybody here seen Senty--S 4 N W1izN the Hodson Ray railway is built we'll be able to spend our Sumtner vacation onthe shores of what a short tirne ago seemed almost outside the pale of civilization. The world is moving on. NeXT Sunday will once more record the Bethlehem victory to this old world Rad the Glad Tidings should be passed along until every one who now sits in the shadows of heathenism has heard the Q)d, Old Story, The banner of the Cross is being unku•lel by a gallant band but there's ample room for re- inforcemeu ts. OLD time usueges, thought to be im- possible to be replaced by anything better, are striking the toboggan every now aud again, One of these is the substitution of the modern improved Telephone system in the displacement of the old fashioned telegraphic code in dispatching railway trains. Those who ought to know say the change will make it next to impossible to make a blunder in an order, Trig new u1;of Banking Act before e this session of Parliameut is destined to pike greater responsibility open stock- holders and officials in the matter of furnisbiug first.class security to the public entrusting their means and busi- ness to their care. It is probable the per- sonal liability clause will be emphasized more strongly. The new law may come into effect next July when the present charters expire. CANADA will send a contingent of militia, seven hundred strong, to the Coronation ceremonies of King George next June.Immediate action will be , taken in accepting the invitation to send the most representative body possible and the various Provinces will all share in the honor of suppling men, It will be a historic occasion and a delightful outing for those fortunate enough to be chosen. Wx are glad to hear the question of world wide pence discussed. It will have a good effect if it even reduces the enor- mous annual expense of billions of dollars in maintaining armies and navies. Just to think of the good that could be ac- complished by this money if it could be diverted into channels of usefulness and helpfulness. Mr. Carnegie deserves the thanks of the world for this activity both by voice and munificient gifts in urging -a larger measure of international peace, Organizations will be formed to forward this Divine mission. In this loth century Nations should bid sav- agry a last: Good bye and vie with one another in establishing great Peace Congresses. erreysore wrought a good work when he Was inspired to write that historic poem "The Change of the Light Bri- gade" and the story of the gallantry of the noble six bemired will never die even if the dreadful charge brought 'death to many who faced the Russian cannon. Last week the noble 800 swooped down . on the Dominion Par- liament at Ottawa and made a good presentation of thetr case, not as Liberals or Conservatives but as 'the exponents of Agriculture in Canada. The present may not reveal anything of a specially rnarked character as a result of the delegation but you may depend it will have a moulding influence oo both Dominion aud Provincial Legislation. Terrible Murder At Goderich A terrible tragedy occurred late Thurs. . day evening at the home of Geo. Van - stone, Goderich • when George. the baby boy, about six years of age, was beaten to death in a horrible manner by his. father. The child' had been writing some num- bet's ou his slate for his mother and sis• ter and the father called him over and requested him to .write the numbers from m to 20, For some reason the child refused, whereupon the father began to beat him. The more the child refused the More in- furiated the father became, until he quite lost control of himself and itr a perfect frenzy beat the boy to death, The mother had become alarmed at the first show of temper on the part of her husband and had gone out several times for assistance but for some reason could not get bold of o Ianyone v to come in and interferer with her husband. It seems incredible that the man could continually heat the child until it died. With no 000 to futetfere, as the house is close to other houses. ver 1 s b Y C oOFivall the mother ran for y t n r assistance' to the residence of Dr, J. C. Hunter several blocks distant and returned with the doctor to her home. They found the father pacing the floor with the child in Isis arms, quite cell, On examination the boy Was found to be dead, The father seemed unable to realize Bret be had killed hie little SOn and stupidly refused to believe that the child WAS dead. Meanwhile P. C Moore Clad tbeen sent for end took 'Vanstone in largo on his arrival. Vanstone did not gist arrest, but seemed unable to tom- "preltend why he was being taken into : Custody. ±(101 d4 The iitslruttirnt as tl by the father'#o et: 1ilthnt bis Itorrth5 pnipose was :e hroomsti(l -in feet two brooms were uaetl, r ue f tr11 (h wa+'btaken in ttvo from centime e Wt tie little one's body. Phe eland's hod r WAS beaten almost black from bend le foot, 't'hr'ee othci children who comprise the family were terrified by their father's frenzy and re- mained huddled in another room while the tragedy was being enacted. The father was, as a rule, a steady worker, and has been employed as labore at Mael, wen's coal yards for tinge, He is 3e years old, and his em- ployers say be is a fairly good employee, but possessed of a terrible temper. His I make-np contains a trace of insanity. Io fact. he was confined in the jail here almost the whole of one Winter, at he Was said to he insane, Vanstone was taken to the jail, . Crown Attorney .Seager states that it may be some weeks before Van- stone an- tn given bearing. a e is gt en a Learing, as an effort will be made to learn every detail which can affect the case, It, Is known it l that Vans one had his moments of in- sanity. He comes of a family afflicted in this way. Several relatives are eon - fined to lunatic asylums. Much depends ou the decision of the coroner's jerv. The jury may bring in indisputable evidence than the murderer was sane when he committed the deed. In that case he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent by Crown Attorney Seeger, who stated that it is his intention to have the investigation continued in any case. If however, the evidence of the coroner's inquest shows that Vaustone was and is unmistakably insane, ..then .it is not probable that he will be brought to trial at all, hal merely confined to a criminal asylum. His oldest son, Lloyd, who is about twelveY e rof age,s a s a gbas offered con- siderably at the hands of Isis father by beatiug. It was only about a year since this boy was severely trounced by his .father, and since complaints have been received by the police of this brutality. The coroner's fury met Friday morn- ing and after viewing the remains of the little victim, adjourned for a week. The mother is almost crazed with grief. There is cue peculiar feature of the affair. It appears that the freuzed man was engaged for almost two bouts, at Least an hour and a half, in beating the little fellow, and although the mother. was auxioos to secure help none of the neighbors could be found to go to the boy's rescue. Passersby, who undoubt- edly knew of the disrurbauce in the house. refused to go to the child's as- sistance' and even neglected tosend for a policeman until it was too late, Geo. Vanstone, sobbed and 'al ied iu his cell all eight because he could not attend the little fellow's funeral. Mon- day morning he was in a collapsed con- dition when seen by the jail surgeon. Mrs. Vanstone's evidence has been taken before both the coroner and the magistrate owing to her delicate coo - di tion. Methodist Church Anniversary Services were greatly -enjoyed. Last Sabbath the anniversary sermons in the McLhudist church here were preached by Rev. Dr. Dougall, of Goderich, and were most highly au-jMINIM . preciated by the large audiences. The morning subject was "The Forgiveness of Sin," based on the . %%orris "There is foreivene s W th'1 bee that Thou msyest be fiend,' Psalm 13o and verse 4.
