OLD time usueges, thought to be im-
possible to be replaced by anything
better, are striking the toboggan every
now aud again, One of these is the
substitution of the modern improved

of the old fashioned telegraphic code in

a good effect if it even reduces the enor-

in maintaining armies and navies. Just
to think of the good that could be ac-

diverted into channels of usefulness and

he Was inspired to write that historic
poem "The Change of the Light Bri-
gade" and the story of the gallantry of
the noble six bemired will never die
even if the dreadful charge brought
'death to many who faced the Russian
cannon. Last week the noble 800
swooped down . on the Dominion Par-
liament at Ottawa and made a good
presentation of thetr case, not as Liberals
or Conservatives but as 'the exponents
of Agriculture in Canada. The present
may not reveal anything of a specially

delegation but you may depend it will
have a moulding influence oo both

Terrible Murder At Goderich
A terrible tragedy occurred late Thurs.
. day evening at the home of Geo. Van -
stone, Goderich • when George. the
baby boy, about six years of age, was
beaten to death in a horrible manner by
his. father.
The child' had been writing some num-
bet's ou his slate for his mother and sis•
ter and the father called him over and
requested him to .write the numbers
from m to 20,
For some reason the child refused,
whereupon the father began to beat him.
The more the child refused the More in-
furiated the father became, until he quite
lost control of himself and itr a perfect
frenzy beat the boy to death,
The mother had become alarmed at
the first show of temper on the part of
her husband and had gone out several
times for assistance but for some reason
could not get bold of o
Ianyone
v to come in
and interferer with her husband.
It seems incredible that the man could
continually heat the child until it died.
With no 000 to futetfere, as the house is

oOFivall the mother ran for y t n r assistance'
to the residence of Dr, J. C. Hunter
several blocks distant and returned with
the doctor to her home. They found the
father pacing the floor with the child in
Isis arms, quite cell, On examination
the boy Was found to be dead,
The father seemed unable to realize
Bret be had killed hie little SOn and
stupidly refused to believe that the child
WAS dead. Meanwhile P. C Moore Clad
tbeen sent for end took 'Vanstone in
largo on his arrival. Vanstone did not
gist arrest, but seemed unable to tom-
"preltend why he was being taken into :
Custody.

the tragedy was being enacted.
The father was, as a rule, a steady

will be made to learn every detail
which can affect the case, It, Is known
it l
that Vans one had his moments of in-
sanity. He comes of a family afflicted
in this way. Several relatives are eon -
fined to lunatic asylums. Much depends
ou the decision of the coroner's jerv.
The jury may bring in indisputable
evidence than the murderer was sane
when he committed the deed. In that
case he will be prosecuted to the fullest
extent by Crown Attorney Seeger, who
stated that it is his intention to have
the investigation continued in any case.
If however, the evidence of the coroner's
inquest shows that Vaustone was and is
unmistakably insane, ..then .it is not
probable that he will be brought to trial
at all, hal merely confined to a criminal
asylum.
His oldest son, Lloyd, who is about

siderably at the hands of Isis father by
beatiug. It was only about a year since
this boy was severely trounced by his
.father, and since complaints have been
received by the police of this brutality.
The coroner's fury met Friday morn-
ing and after viewing the remains of
the little victim, adjourned for a week.
The mother is almost crazed with grief.
There is cue peculiar feature of the
affair. It appears that the freuzed man
was engaged for almost two bouts, at
Least an hour and a half, in beating the
little fellow, and although the mother.
was auxioos to secure help none of the
neighbors could be found to go to the
boy's rescue. Passersby, who undoubt-
edly knew of the disrurbauce in the
house. refused to go to the child's as-
sistance' and even neglected tosend for
a policeman until it was too late,
Geo. Vanstone, sobbed and 'al ied iu
his cell all eight because he could not
attend the little fellow's funeral. Mon-
day morning he was in a collapsed con-
dition when seen by the jail surgeon.
Mrs. Vanstone's evidence has been
taken before both the coroner and the
magistrate owing to her delicate coo -
di tion.
Methodist Church Anniversary
Services were greatly -enjoyed.
Last Sabbath the anniversary sermons
in the McLhudist church here were
preached by Rev. Dr. Dougall, of
Goderich, and were most highly au-jMINIM

morning subject was "The Forgiveness
of Sin," based on the . %%orris "There is
