The world is moving Nei Bentley will once more record the Bethlehem victory to this old world apd the Glad Tidings should be passed alopg until every one who now site in the sheclows et heathenism has heard the Old, Old Story. The banner of the Cross is being nnturlecl by a gallant band but u there': sample room for re. inforeemects, OLD time u0uages, thought to be im- possible to be replaced by anything batter, are etriking the toboggan every now and again. One of these is the substitution of the modern improved Telephone system in the displacement of the old fashioned telegraphic code in dispatching railway trains. Those who ought, to know say the change will make it next to impossible to make a blunder in an order, TRS new B anlua Act before g this session of Parltameut is destined to place greater responsibility upon stock- holders and officials in the matter of furnishing first-class security to the public entrusting their means and busi- ness to their care. It is probabletheper- sonal liability clause will be emphasized more, strongly. The new law may come into effect next July when the present charters expire. CANADA will send a contingent of militia, seven hundred strong, to the Coronation ceremonies of King George next June. Immediate action will be taken in accepting the invitation to send the most representative body possible and the various Provinces will all share in the honor of suppliug men. It will be a historic occasion and a delightful outing for those fortunate enough to be chosen. Wo are glad to hear the question of world wide peace discussed. It will have a good effect if it even reduces the enor- mous annual expense of billions of dollars in maintaining armies and navies. Just to think of the good that could be ac- complished by this money if it could be diverted into channels of usefulness and helpfulness. NIr. Carnegie deserves the thanks of the world for this activity both by voice and munificient gifts in urging a larger measure of international peace. Organizations will be formed to forward this Divine mission, In this 20111 century Nations should bid saw- agry a last Good bye and vie with one another in establishing great Peace Congresses. TONNYsoN wrought a good work when he was inspired to write that historic poem "The Change of the Light Bri- gade" and the story of the gallantry of the noble six hundred will sever die even if the dreadful charge brought 'death tomany who faced the Russian Hannon. Last week the noble 800 swooped down on the Dominion Par- liament at Ottawa and made a good presentation of thetr case, not as Liberals or Conservatives but as 'the exponeuts of Agriculture in Canada. The present may not reveal anything of a specially marked character as a result of the delegation but you may depend it will have a moulding influence on both Dominion and Provincial Legislation. Terrible Murder At Goderich A terrible tragedy occurred late Thurs- day -evening at the home of Geo, Van - stone, Goderich when George. the baby boy, about six years of age, was beaten to death in a horrible manner by bis father. The child had been writing some num- bers on his slate for his mother and sis- ter and the father called him over and requested him to ,write the uumbers froth 1 to 20. For some reason the child refused, whereupon the father began to beat him. 'Phe more the child refused the more in- furiated the father became, until be quite lost control of hitnself and in a perfect frenzybeat the boy to death, The another had become alarmed at the first show of temper on the part of her husband and bad gone uut several times for assistance but for some reason Could not get hold of anyone to cotne in and interfere with her husband, it seems incredible that the man could Continually beat the child until it died with no one to interfere, as the house is Very close to other houses, otiFittali the mother' r n for a Assistance M the residence of Dr, J. C. Hunter several blocks distant and returned with the doctor to her home. They found the fatheq.pacing the floor with the child in his Arms, quite calm. On examination the boy was found to be dead. The father seemed unable to realize Wet he had killed his little sail and etitpidly refused to believe that the child wes dead. Meeuwhile P. C Moore had \been sent for attd took Venstote in liege on his errieel, Vanstone did not silt at•rdst, but seemed uhaible to com- prehend oifiy .he was,; being take!' into. ouetody. The father was, es a rule, a amide worker, and hes been employed laborer at MacEwen's coal yards time. He is 39 years old, and his ployers say 110 ie a fairly good employee, but possessed et a terrible temper. His make-up contains a trace of insanity, It, fact, be was confined in the jail Here almost the whole of one Winter, at he was said to be insane. Vanstone was taken to the jail: Crown Attorney Seeger states that it may be some weeks before Van - stone is • iven a hearing. ,ea I g g, As an effort will be made to learn every detail •bio t can anent the ase known w l tt c It is k< u w that Vanstone had his moments of in- eanity, He comes of a family afflicted in this way. Several relatives are con- fined to luuatic asylums. Much depends on the decisiou of the coroner's jury, The jury mac bring in indisputable evidence than the murderer was sane when he committed the deed, In that case he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent by Crown Attorney Seeger, who stated that it is his intention to have the investigation continued iu any case. If however, the evideuoe of the coroner's inquest shows that Vanstone was and is unmistakably insane, then it is not probable that he will be brought to trial at all, hut merely confined to a criminal asylum. His o:dest son, Lloyd, who is about twelve years of age, i r las suffered con- siderably at the hands of his father by beating. It was only about a year since this boy was severely trounced by his father, and since complaints have been received by the police of this brutality, The coroner's jury met Friday morn- ing and after viewing the remains of the little victim, adjourned for a week. The mother is almost crazed with grief. There is one peculiar feature of the affair. It appears that the frenzed man was engaged for almost two bouts, at least an hour and a half, in beating the little fellow, and although the mother was anxious to secure help none of the neighbors could be found to go to the boy's rescue, Passersby, who undoubt- edly knew of the disrurbance in the house, refused to go to the child's as- sistance' and even neglected to send for a policeman until it was too late. Geo. Vanstone, sobbed and c; led in his cell all night because he could not attend the little fellow's funeral. Mon- day morning he was in a collapsed con- dition when seen by the jail surgeon. 51 rs. Vanstone's evidence has been taken before both the coronet' and the magistrate owing to her delicate con - dition. • +►+'I+$ ' +•+t +R*s+ •+•' '14+•'3.++ x•••404•+40+++•l',+•+i,.. +sa+ e HOLIDAY GIFTS r Headquarters for Fancy, Valuable and • • • Appropriate, Xmas and New Years Gifts e will be the. jewelry Sore of t • 08 a . , fora s ell. •. t JIG.JONE Bi Values for Small Outlay y Methodist Church Anniversary Last Sabbath the auniversary sermons in the Methodist church here were preached by Rev.
