The Cigarette Evil
The .following interesting paper was
read by Mrs. John Rubb at the meeting
of the W. C. 'P. U., Brussels, last Fri-
day :—
That the cigarette is an evilwill any
motheror sister in thisaudience deny i'
Now we know that all kinds of evil
will live and continue to do their deadly
work until public attention -is drawn to
them.
The public conscience can usually be
depended upon to express itself when
once it has . become enlightened and
aroused on any question of general wel-
fare.
The opposition to the cigarette is ten
times as powerful as it was ten years
ago, for then there was little sentiment
against it. While the victims of the
weed are growing so are its foes and
some clay public opinion will be strong
enough to place its heel on this business
and crush the life out of it.
Our boys and girls are the most
valuable asset that our country possesses
and if our boys go wrong everythiug
will go wrong. Nothing can bring us
abiding prosperity unless we have
character and a high standard of morals
in the rising generation so let us see to
it that we neglect not the interests of
the hors.

Women's District Institute
After a long season of wet weather,
we were indeed pleased to see on the
moraiug of June 8th, a patch of blue
sky, which foretold that we would have
a fine day for -our annual District meet-
ing, when to members of Brussels
Branch started out at about 12.15 p. 111.
in a cariole with a- capable driver, bound
for Molesworth where the meeting -was
to beheld. On arriving at Jamestown
3 members of the Branch there coined
us, making a jolly addition to our party.
The meeting was held on Mrs. Robert
Mitchell's lawn. Mrs. Armstrong, Dis-
trict Secretary of Gorrie, performing
the duties of both President and Secre-
tary.
For the opening number we sang one
verse of the Maple Leaf. Mrs. Arm-
strong then gave the President's and
Secretary -Treasurer's report from which
we gleaned there were 18 organized
branches of Women's Iinstitutes in East

no finlucial aid whatever, from either

Our District Secretary has been in the
habit of receivinga yearly salary of $10
but this year she received• nothing for
her services, there being no money for
this purpose, Miss Sirup' -on, of Walton,
Said the understood that the reason that
neither the Co, Council nor Farmer's
Institute had given the Women's in
stitute financial aid this ye:ir was that.
they considered the body now . strong
enough to he self-supporting.
The election of officers then took place
and on motilin of Miss Simpson, of
Walton, seconded by Mrs. Spink:, of
Fordwich, the efficient stall was re-elect-
ed. ,
Following ladies were then called on
to give short ecldr'esses, giving sugges•
tions as to holy the Institute can he 'nn-

prepared them for one has to do a certain
amount of reading before preparing a
paper and you are benefitted in that way.
We should see that our papers are of a
practical nature, as a number of women
who have never attended an Institute
meeting will tell you that the theory in
our papers caunot be put into practice.
Some of the ladies spoke of giving an
oyster.supper in the Winter and inviting.
our gentlemen friends and thought that
a good way to advertise the Institute.
Mrs. Shoemaker, of Paisley, President
of Centre Bruce District, who was visit-
ing in the vicinity, was called on. She
said they had given flower and vegetable
seeds in the Spring to School children,
and they brought their flowers and vege-

that for them.
Choice recitations by Misses Johnston,
Burke and Strachan, a welt rendered
musical selection by Miss Bernice
Slemmoo and two Inc solos by Miss
Jean Brown, were sautlwiched between
the different reports and addresses mak-
ing pleasing breaks in the program.
Meeting was brought to a close by
singing the National Anthem.
Tables were set on the lawn and as
near as known 953 ladies with a small
sprinkling of gentlemen sat down to a
sumptuous supper, which was daintily
served.
A short time was spent in social chat
and then we made preparations for
home and after a drive CO a beautiful
June evening, through a fine agricul-
tural district, with Nature clothed in
her finest dress of green, who could not
say "What a bounce world we live in

are in the Women's Institute in East
